To ask how to get through the night with a UTI

shaniahoo · 07/07/2023 22:23

Never had a UTI before, then around lunchtime today I started peeing more and more frequently until by dinnertime it had become like being constantly desperate for the toilet but peeing brings relief for about 30 seconds and then I'm desperate again. Then the last two times I've been it's started stinging when I go and continues to sting afterwards. 111 have advised me to go the walk in centre first thing in the morning so I will, but what the hell am I supposed to to do tonight??? I won't be able to sleep a wink! I've been sitting on the toilet for a while just letting drips out as they come and before that I was on the sofa with an ice pack between my legs. Is there ANYTHING I can do besides take paracetamol and sit up all night in extreme discomfort?

I second taking an antihistamine if you have any. Pain killers and lots and lots of water. As a PP said, no citrus. It’ll really burn with citrus! I know how horrible it is. I hope you get seen asap tomorrow.

Seeleyboo · 07/07/2023 22:47

Oh gosh, I suffer terribly with UTI. I drink and drink and drink and lay in a warm bath. Literally drinking and peeing. Can you call OOH and ask for a prescription for antibiotics.

TeddyFluff · 07/07/2023 22:48

Have a bath. I find it helps enough to be able to get to sleep. My utter sympathies OP, they’re miserable.

Greengreengrass231 · 07/07/2023 22:48

I’ve heard drinking baking soda dissolved in water helps too but I’ve never tried this

shaniahoo · 07/07/2023 22:49

Blah they've upgraded me to a clinician callback however the clinician callbacks are taking up to 24 hours apparently. I'll be in the walk in centre by then!

If the pain when you wee is unbearable as grim as it sounds take a warm bath and pee while you are in there. It takes the sting away

cocksstrideintheevening · 07/07/2023 22:53

Gallons of water, pee in the bath or shower

ImsureIam · 07/07/2023 22:53

I have found after you have passed urine get in the shower and direct the shower head towards your urethra. It helps to ease the pain.
I got antibiotics from boots online when I last had UTI

prettyinpinkormaybegreen · 07/07/2023 22:54

I've just come out the other end of this pain. Can you send someone to supermarket for you? Cystitis relief sachets and cranberry juice, lots of it and lots of water. It will get easier if you keep drinking and take paracetamol. Don't sit on the loo endlessly as it doesn't help x

17Degrees · 07/07/2023 22:54

Drink loads of water, take paracetamol and ibuprofen at regular intervals. Take a hot water bottle to bed. First wee, take a sample, find a chemist which can test and prescribe antibiotics. I've had this 4 times in the last year, it's shit so I feel for you.

Rudderneck · 07/07/2023 22:55

I am a regular UTI suffer, I find it best to load up on the ibuprofen.

Also, drink as much as you can. It will make you pee more but it will also become less uncomfortable when you do.

ChrissyShenkle · 07/07/2023 22:55

Teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of juice/water, tastes vile but works also sit on something hard like a chair but on the edge so there's pressure on your bits,

17Degrees · 07/07/2023 22:55

Oh and for future, drink loads and try d mannose tablets

Clearthinking · 07/07/2023 22:57

Cranberry juice works wonders. Had 4 in the last 6 months I feel your pain

Crayfishforyou · 07/07/2023 22:58

Just keep downing pints of water at a time to keep flushing it through

Maray1967 · 07/07/2023 22:59

When I had one I was told to always make sure to empty the bladder - sit and rock backwards and forwards for ten seconds, don’t hurry off the loo . Leaving urine in the bladder can cause the uti.

shaniahoo · 07/07/2023 22:59

I wish I had a bath at home, that sounds like the nicest thing. I might try a shower before trying to sleep. And I'm going to try the bicarb thing now, thanks for the suggestions!

I get so many UTI's, just finished antibiotics for my 3rd one this year.
Have a large glass of water, as said add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and if you don't pee straight away just go to bed, don't sit on the loo, just lay down and try to sleep, if you manage to doze but wake needing a pee go straight away.

Get yourself seen to in the morning even if you feel slightly better, don't wait until you feel like you're weeing out glass shards.

It may be worth popping to a Savers/Superdrug or other chemist for some cystitis relief to keep at home incase it happens again.

Really feel for you...

Twonewcats · 07/07/2023 23:00

Have a warm bath.
Drink as much water as you can stomach.
If you have a 24hr supermarket, go and by cystitis sachets. If they don't have them, buy cranberry juice.
Drink, drink and drink some more.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 07/07/2023 23:01

Some of the big supermarkets sell cystitis remedies in the medicine aisle. Also I swear by lemon barley water. Not the sugar free version and must be lemon barley rather than lemon squash but it works really well to ease the symptoms. An elderly dr advised me to try it about 30 years ago! Also a warm bath with some bicarb of soda will ease the irritation and lie on your side in bed with a hot water bottle up high between your thighs. It is miserable!

TeddySunflowers · 07/07/2023 23:02

I get recurrent UTIs when that happens to me I drink as much water as physically possible, paracetamol, then get a hot water bottle between my legs and that is amazing for relief. Be really careful though as burning yourself there of all places is particularly awful.

Boomerang43 · 07/07/2023 23:03

Oh I’m sending so many hugs, they are the absolute WORST! Genuinely would rather have another csection recovery than a uti. I used to get them all the time and I think the last one I had must have traumatised me so much that I’ll now go out my way to avoid one coming on if I feel it starting but I constantly live in fear! The last one I got was on holiday with friends (all couples) and I was unable to do anything or go anywhere. I spent two nights sitting in the shower 🤦🏻‍♀️

Paracetamol might take the edge off a bit. The vile sachets you get at supermarkets (might be a 24 hour one?) do help a bit, it feels like they just make it less stingy but if it’s got to the bad stage you’ll still need antibiotics in the morning. Drink A LOT in case it’s still in the saveable stage, like literally 4 litres of water. Avoid tea, it makes it worse. Pee in the shower or bath (ew I know but desperate times), the water seems to help it sting less.

Theyre the most crippling thing ever. They’re so miserable and I feel so much for anyone who has one ☹️

strawberryandcreams · 07/07/2023 23:04

Sitting in a bath.

MagentaRocks · 07/07/2023 23:07

Some pharmacists can prescribe a short course of anti biotics. Saves waiting for a GP or waiting at a walk in centre.
