to think meat should not be sold full price on it's "use by" date?

I bought a pork roasting joint in Morrisons on Friday afternoon, around 3pm. It was in the normal meat section, not in the reduced section, and didn't have a yellow sticker. I normally do check the dates on things but for some reason I didn't look at this one.

I just opened it for our Sunday dinner and it's minging. Checked the date and it was dated Friday. It's too late to take it back today anyway, so I've wrapped it up in about 20 layers of cling film and stuck it back in the fridge.

AIBU to take it back tomorrow and ask for a refund? Or is it my own stupid fault for not checking the date before I bought it?

Yanbu I’d be furious but I’d have took it back today thoughAnd got a replacement

GalileoHumpkins · 02/07/2023 16:29

Totally on you for not checking the date, why should you have a refund?

ChatterMonkey · 02/07/2023 16:30

Totally on you for not checking the date. At that time on the date it goes out of date, its perfectly reasonable for the shop to still assume thet can get full value for it, as someone may need it for that nights dinner. Its a lot later in the evening that things get reduced.

TeaKitten · 02/07/2023 16:30

It’s your fault for not checking the date. Plenty of people would have been happy to buy it to cook the same evening, and if you weren’t you could have picked a different joint.

Oysterbabe · 02/07/2023 16:32

Yabu,* *the shop have done nothing wrong. I'm surprised it's off only 2 days over.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 02/07/2023 16:33

Why on earth should they give you a refund?!

Madness.

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 16:34

They will refund you without question in my experience
although I never ever buy meat without checking date and always teach for the ones at the back to get freshest

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 16:35

Wait I have just seen that you bought it on Friday!! So frickin way OP. Cheeky

Kiwiandstrawberries · 02/07/2023 16:36

I would take it back It was probably stinking on Friday as well which was only 48 hrs ago!
Put it in freezer overnight so it doesn't stink your fridge out!

Dacadactyl · 02/07/2023 16:38

I'd also take it back and ask for a refund. Whether or not they give you one will be a matter for the store but I'd be back complaining for sure.

PuppyMonkey · 02/07/2023 16:40

It’s “on you” for not checking but it’s also “on them” for selling a product with a use by date of the same day without any reductions or warning signs etc.

xsquared · 02/07/2023 16:42

Do people not just accept responsibility and learn from mistakes anymore? How is it the shop's fault for you not checking the date before you buy something?

veryfluffyfluff · 02/07/2023 16:42

It's up to you the check the date. They do put it on the box. They don't HAVE to reduce it.

They do. They print the date on the item

EmeraldFox · 02/07/2023 16:43

If it's obviously off 40 hours past its use by then it was probably already off when you bought it.

YeahIsaidit · 02/07/2023 16:45

No you wouldn't be entitled to a refund, you should have checked the date on it when you bought it. Supermarkets reduce "on the day" things at different times so maybe you got there before they started doing their reductions that day, maybe human error and they just missed it. Regardless, not on them to give you money back, throw it in the bin and move on

WouldYouLikeYourMuffinButtered · 02/07/2023 16:45

I think I'm in the minority, but I would have eaten it !

The relevant point is that op didn’t open it on the use by date . If it had smelt then - then she absolutely had a case for returning

but she didn’t open it the following day either

she opened it two days later

You'd look like a loony complaining that meat 2 days past it's sell by date was off and demanding a refund on that basis

Even if it was minging, which I took to mean visibly off and smelly?

It stank

you would eating stinking meat?

EmeraldFox · 02/07/2023 16:48

I think they should be reduced when they have less than three days on them. It would mean the short dates things would be bought by those who can use them quickly rather than everyone looking for the longest dates. It would also be easier for people with poor eyesight to see what was short dated.

Emmamoo89 · 02/07/2023 16:48

Yabu

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 16:49

. I normally do check the dates on things but for some reason I didn't look at this one.

and you didn’t check the day later either

in Fact you didn’t check at all. You opened it two days after purchasing having had 48 hours to “check”

Missingmyusername · 02/07/2023 16:50

Shouldn’t you have frozen it?
