to think meat should not be sold full price on it's "use by" date?

I bought a pork roasting joint in Morrisons on Friday afternoon, around 3pm. It was in the normal meat section, not in the reduced section, and didn't have a yellow sticker. I normally do check the dates on things but for some reason I didn't look at this one.

I just opened it for our Sunday dinner and it's minging. Checked the date and it was dated Friday. It's too late to take it back today anyway, so I've wrapped it up in about 20 layers of cling film and stuck it back in the fridge.

AIBU to take it back tomorrow and ask for a refund? Or is it my own stupid fault for not checking the date before I bought it?

It's up to you the check the date. They do put it on the box. They don't HAVE to reduce it.

Yes - why on earth do you think they should refund you? Confused

MenoRageisReal · 03/07/2023 01:10

@PuppyMonkey The relevant point is they shouldn’t be selling meat at full price on its use by date.

Why on Earth not? It's a business decision - if they think they can sell it at full rate on that date they will. Markdowns are a wastage policy, not a god given right!

A lot of people are deliberately misinterpreting what your complaint would be about (or they are hard of thinking).

And I think you imagining what the op's complain would be about. OP's AIBU is literally would she be U to take the meat back and ask for a refund.

Little room for misinterpretation there. There is nothing in her OP to suggest she'll enquire about the store policy on reducing the price of meat on its use by date.

When you take something back and ask for a refund, the store will normally ask for a reason. So the "hard of thinking" reason would be "it's gone out of date and I forgot to eat it in time". This is different to the actual reason that OP would give, which would be something like "It was sold at 3pm with a use-by date of the same date, without any discount offered".

What does a store policy have to do with this situation. The store policy could be anything for internal purposes, it doesn’t mean they will make themselves liable for refunds on perfectly legal sales.

Well, if the store policy is that fresh meat products should be sold with at least 2 days shelf life, otherwise should be stickered and/or moved to a discount section (for example), then OP asking about this and pointing out that the policy wasn't followed might persuade a store manager to offer a goodwill gesture of a refund or replacement. No it doesn't mean they will, but there's no cost to OP for trying, and it would help the store to see that their policy isn't being followed correctly. This kind of thing simply isn't good business, it leaves people feeling like they've been scammed, and a decent store manager wouldn't want it happening.

I fully comprehend why op's taking hermeat back. She thinks it should have had a yellow sticker on it to warn her, and the vast majority of posters have already said it's down to her to check the date.

Trying to blame someone else for not following use by date yellow sticker policy in order to get a refund seems a bit desperate, and avoiding responsibility.

The OP was inconvenienced by her forgetting to check the date, she wasn't food poisoned.

It stank

you would eating stinking meat?

I work in a supermarket and people buy stinking meat and fish all the time, it would have a reduced to clear sticker on it though.

I am a team leader in a supermarket. One of my tasks is the reductions. We reduce at 3pm and 6pm but staffing levels means that reductions can sometimes get done late. There is no legal obligation to reduce any items, its purely to reduce food waste so as long as its in date when it is sold to you then the supermarket have done nothing wrong. Customers will bring me items they have found on sale in date for the day and expect me to reduce them on the spot for them - even when I'm not doing the reductions. This is against company policy so we would be wrong to do this, we only reduce items as and when we get to them. The reductions are not our priority there are plenty of other jobs that are time sensitive which we need to complete before we even get to them.
