to think meat should not be sold full price on it's "use by" date?

I bought a pork roasting joint in Morrisons on Friday afternoon, around 3pm. It was in the normal meat section, not in the reduced section, and didn't have a yellow sticker. I normally do check the dates on things but for some reason I didn't look at this one.

I just opened it for our Sunday dinner and it's minging. Checked the date and it was dated Friday. It's too late to take it back today anyway, so I've wrapped it up in about 20 layers of cling film and stuck it back in the fridge.

AIBU to take it back tomorrow and ask for a refund? Or is it my own stupid fault for not checking the date before I bought it?

I think they should be reduced when they have less than three days on them.

Really? I would only ever buy meat if I knew I was going to use it soon anyway, so 3 days is a long time.

Take it back

Take it back

And say what?

This meat that I let go out of date, smells like it is out of date?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/07/2023 16:55

I agree OP, and M&S are the worst for this. You have to check every item like a hawk.

Many people shop weekly and deliveries have 3+ days on dates. Just a small reduction would clear out the short dates and make stock rotation easier, reduce wastage.

speluncean · 02/07/2023 16:56

You can't expect a refund on meat that is two days out of date.

PuppyMonkey · 02/07/2023 16:57

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 16:46

The relevant point is that op didn’t open it on the use by date . If it had smelt then - then she absolutely had a case for returning

but she didn’t open it the following day either

she opened it two days later

The relevant point is they shouldn’t be selling meat at full price on its use by date.

Says who? No regulation to this effect at all.

Selling meat full price on use by day is 100% complying with food safety standards that retailers have to comply with

I agree, and if they had reduced it earlier it wouldn't have been left there for someone to accidentally buy. If I am paying full price I will get the best I can for that price with the longest date I can easily access. Short dated stock should be cheaper.

LolaSmiles · 02/07/2023 17:01

I think they should be reduced when they have less than three days on them. It would mean the short dates things would be bought by those who can use them quickly rather than everyone looking for the longest dates. It would also be easier for people with poor eyesight to see what was short dated
I agree with this, things like meat should be reduced the day before the use by date in my opinion.

The OP should have checked and is unreasonable for wanting a refund for meat being off 2 days past the use by though.

PuppyMonkey · 02/07/2023 17:02

I think it’s really shoddy practice.

Then you should make sure you check the dates on the food you buy so you don't accidentally pay full-price for something on that days date.

Which is exactly what OP should have done.

xsquared · 02/07/2023 17:06

Thise who ihunk op should take it back and demand a refund, would you do the same if it was milk 2 days after the use by date? Where do you draw the line and why just meat?

I’m going to insist on this rule for all MN posts from now on.

Or should I say I think I’m going to insist on this rule for all MN posts from now on.

Bromptotoo · 02/07/2023 17:14

Providing it was kept properly, like being in a fridge, I don't think a joint of meat bought on Friday should be *'minging' by today. That would be the case even if it was at its use by limit when sold.

*I would though be curious as to how minging manifested itself. Fresh meat that's been wrapped in plastic needs time to breathe. When first exposed it can be a bit pongy - but that's no more than a bit of degradation of fluid etc on the joint's outermost surface. Open it, maybe rinse it under cold running water, and I'd expect it to be fine.

If beyond that then absolutely you should get a refund but TBH I'd expect one anyway was stuff on its last day should be reduced/stickered.

You made out that they “should” reduce as in they were required to.

The relevant point is they shouldn’t be selling meat at full price on its use by date.

when in fact - it’s simply your view. And a daft one at that.

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 17:15

And you’re ability doesn’t make sense 😂

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 17:16

Analogy

oopslateagain · 02/07/2023 17:21

Right, point taken, it's gone in the bin! You lot do get straight to the point, don't you 😂

I was hoping the MN jury would think it was reasonable to return it, but obviously is totally on me that I didn't check the date.

For those saying they'd eat it, trust me - not with that smell, it was vile.

It’s “on you” for not checking but it’s also “on them” for selling a product with a use by date of the same day without any reductions or warning signs etc.

rubbish, it’s not ‘on them’. They were legally allowed to sell it on that day. They are not obliged to reduce anything at all but often do reduce things later on, but they don’t start reductions so close to the middle of the day.

GirlOfTudor · 02/07/2023 17:28

You've obviously never worked in food retail lol. Food with a best before date IS reduced on the day (sometimes before!), but there are set times that vary by shop, location and even staffing levels.

I wouldn't waste my time returning an item that I have no right to return 2 days after it went out of date, without the packaging, that was perfectly fine when purchased. See it as a life lesson.
