Is this enough food for a bbq for 20 people?

Posting on AIBU as you get a better response 😀 We are hosting a bbq for 20 people (17 adults and 3 children) on Saturday. We are using a gas and charcoal bbq. I’m thinking to provide this per person:

1 Burger, 2 sausages, homemade chicken & veggie kebab, 1 Chinese pork steak and 1 or 2 drumsticks.

For the sides we have Greek salad, green leafy salad, coleslaw , jacket potatoes , pesto pasta , corn on the cob and potato salad .

There are no veggies attending. Just wondered if it’s too much food or about right ?

That’s fine

TheSnowyOwl · 21/06/2023 19:27

It’s more than I could eat but will depend upon their appetites.

Don’t forget the drinks as well.

pinkyredrose · 21/06/2023 19:28

That's loads!

Inextremis · 21/06/2023 19:28

Sounds about right to me, but I'd double up on the burgers - DH loves his burgers and would want two! He's probably not the only one.

Blondey2023 · 21/06/2023 19:30

Sounds yummy, what time shall I come? 😋

Hugasauras · 21/06/2023 19:30

I agree about the burgers. I think some people would prefer two burgers over a pork steak or kebab (my husband would for sure!). So I would probably get some extra burgers.

KnownByAssociation · 21/06/2023 19:31

I think it's a bit too much, if you wanted to save on time/costs I would get rid of one of the chicken items! Sounds like a lovely spread 😄

LittleMonks11 · 21/06/2023 19:31

Drop the pork steak and add a burger. What time do you want us?

Exac

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 21/06/2023 19:32

Agree re the burgers. Would also ditch the drumsticks as they’re messy to eat, can be pink and leave you having to deal with bones.

sounds good otherwise. One thought - what time are you having people over? You may want to have a stash of extra sausages if people still there late in the evening.

Augend23 · 21/06/2023 19:33

But surely not everyone will eat all of those things, so the people who have a pork steak might reduce the number of burgers? Or are you thinking that burgers will be more popular than the other options and therefore that the OP should cut down the non burger stuff and provide more burgers?

Because 7 meat items per person is A LOT! I wouldn't want more than that just because the leftovers would become unmanageable.

Exactly this!

Don't know why it cut half my other reply off. Maybe I was in too much of a rush to come and join in... 😅

Yes I would ditch the pork steak and just get more burgers. Burgers and sausages are the best bits!

SparklyShoesandTutus · 21/06/2023 19:35

Personally that sounds like a lot of meat per person but depends on appetites and length of time you expect people to be there. Is ot an all at once venture or will people be there for the day. When we do big events we tend to do 2 sittings so cook a load up around lunch and then again early evening.
How old are the kids. Most of ours between 7-12 would have a burger or hotdog plus a drum stick.
What we've learnt woth experience os don't cook it all at once and buy stuff that can be frozen for another day if it isn't cook. I always over buy as have some weird fear that people might leave my house hungry.
Most importantly have fun and enjoy the event

lechatnoir · 21/06/2023 19:36

Sounds great but I'd be working on either pork steak OR chicken drumstick each otherwise that's a lot of meat unless it's a houseful of teenagers in which case double everything

Bharath · 21/06/2023 19:36

People will eat more than one burger unless you stop them. Then others won’t have a burger. I wouldn’t eat drumsticks off a bbq, it’s too hard to cook through and too risky if it’s pink in the middle. I’d just get extra burgers.

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/06/2023 19:36

You'll have a lot of chicken drumsticks left imho. I'd do marinated chicken thighs instead of them.

Flickersy · 21/06/2023 19:37

A burger and two sausages plus sides is adequate for an adult. I'd drop the drumsticks and the pork steaks, keep the chicken kebabs for those who want a bit of white meat.

gogomoto · 21/06/2023 19:37

I'd get more burgers and drop the pork steaks. Do 32 (assuming packs of 4) perhaps as not everyone will want two

Whichwhatnow · 21/06/2023 19:40

Sounds lovely and definitely enough. I wouldn't touch the drumsticks personally but there's enough choice there for everyone!

If there's anything left over surely it becomes breakfast/lunch the next day? It all sounds easily reheatable.

Optimist2020 · 21/06/2023 19:40

Wow, so many responses . Me & DP have agreed to drop the drumsticks and get more burgers and saussages. DP said burgers are the worst part of the bbq 🤣🤣 . They’ll only be one sitting for the food.

Agreed, but only once he's cooked all the burgers first. Wink

cakewench · 21/06/2023 19:45

I BBQ frequently and agree to up your burgers a bit. Not everyone will want two but it's good to have a few spare at least. And people tend to snack on sausages without realising how many they've had.

I do love BBQ chicken tbh but I agree with the others, if you're hoping to not have many leftovers, that's a good thing to take off.

Definitely agree - my husband and his friends would definitely have more than one burger
