Is this enough food for a bbq for 20 people?

Posting on AIBU as you get a better response 😀 We are hosting a bbq for 20 people (17 adults and 3 children) on Saturday. We are using a gas and charcoal bbq. I’m thinking to provide this per person:

1 Burger, 2 sausages, homemade chicken & veggie kebab, 1 Chinese pork steak and 1 or 2 drumsticks.

For the sides we have Greek salad, green leafy salad, coleslaw , jacket potatoes , pesto pasta , corn on the cob and potato salad .

There are no veggies attending. Just wondered if it’s too much food or about right ?

I'd ditch the jacket potatoes. They're too filling and have to be eaten with a knife & fork whilst sat down. The other items can be eaten one handed whilst holding the plate in the other hand and it's easier to move around to socialise.

Meat wise, I'd be less fussed about the sausages but know I'm probably in the minority as most people want them at a BBQ. Drumsticks would be my go to but would cook them in the oven, then finish in the BBQ for the flavour. The rest of it is fine, not everyone is going to want one of everything but I'd probably increase the burgers and kebabs.

I'd also do fried onions because they belong in burgers and hot dogs.

I’d keep the chicken drumsticks - some people aren’t keen on burgers/sausages due to them being highly processed (me!)

will there be burger buns?

Save me a seat.

I agree with your DP I dont like burgers , or cold pasta 🤢but if the pesto pasta is hot that’s perfect
Bread rolls ? Or ciabatta ?

I don't really see the love for burgers or sausages to be honest. They're just meh.

At my last bbq we had:

Lamb ribs
Lamb chops
Chicken thighs
Chicken wings
Pork belly

Salad
Rice
Pitta breads
Tzatziki
Coleslaw

And then a Cadbury caramel cake for dessert.

WTFAreYouForReal · 21/06/2023 20:46

And corn on the cob, of course!

Antipodean here. Very confused about the jacket potatoes - on a camping holiday maybe but at a BBQ? Don’t forget pickled beetroot for the burgers. Ditch the pork steaks (too much risk of being over or under cooked). I’d go lamb or chicken thighs on kebabs in preference to drumsticks, if you must have drumsticks then I’m with Clevs, put them in the oven.

no one seems to have mentioned halloumi?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/06/2023 20:50

I think it's plenty to make sure everyone gets their choice of meat and you can always plan to freeze or use up leftovers over the next few days or give them to people to take away with them.

I wouldn't eat burgers at all and probably not sausages but would have pork, chicken and salads so there will probably be other non burger eaters meaning a few spare for those who want more than one burger.

lljkk · 21/06/2023 20:50

I hope all the leftover food doesn't get thrown out.

Optimist2020 · 21/06/2023 20:57

@WTFAreYouForReal your bbq menu sounds lovely. We usually do lamb steaks if there’s 10 or less .

@legalalien the jacket potatoes is due to going to a bbq once and having a lovely jacket potato to go alongside my meats , so have included 1/2 a spud pp. Wont have a jacket this time as there’s already a lot of sides.

@lljkk we wouldn’t throw away left over food, will be lunches for a couple of days.

Think it sounds about right.

But I would do more variety and more sides - I don't eat burgers and none of my female friends do. A burger in a bun is a meal in itself, ime.

We always do a caprese salad and it's always hugely popular. Plus a 'russian' potato salad, Delia's rice salad, creamed corn (much nicer than on the cob, imo), green salad and a pesto grain mix.

I wouldn't do drumsticks either - far nicer to make up chicken satay imo. Lobo satay mix kits are amazing. Guests always ask for the recipe!

caringcarer · 21/06/2023 22:18

I ditch the drumsticks as they tend to be raw on the inside but overcooked on the outside. I always worry about food poisoning and chicken often involved. I'd double the number of burgers as lots of people like two. I'd probably add a few extra sausages too. If no one eats them you can always refrigerate and eat them cold the following day.

I think burgers are worst part of a BBQ! Who has more than 1 burger!?

Almost every man I have ever known. My DS wouldn't eat the other options except maybe a sausage but would want 2 burgers.
