Is this enough food for a bbq for 20 people?

Posting on AIBU as you get a better response 😀 We are hosting a bbq for 20 people (17 adults and 3 children) on Saturday. We are using a gas and charcoal bbq. I’m thinking to provide this per person:

1 Burger, 2 sausages, homemade chicken & veggie kebab, 1 Chinese pork steak and 1 or 2 drumsticks.

For the sides we have Greek salad, green leafy salad, coleslaw , jacket potatoes , pesto pasta , corn on the cob and potato salad .

There are no veggies attending. Just wondered if it’s too much food or about right ?

Double up the burgers

LuckySantangelo35 · 21/06/2023 20:02

WAYYYYY too much food!

canigetfiredforthis · 21/06/2023 20:03

I think burgers are worst part of a BBQ! Who has more than 1 burger!?

TravellingJack · 21/06/2023 20:05

Have you got sliced cheese for the burgers? Preferably Emmenthal but any port in a storm. Also coleslaw and a variety of sauces, not just ketchup. And brioche buns!

Maztek · 21/06/2023 20:06

We host a family bbq every year which is usually about 30 people. We get enough food for about 80 people usually and it all ends up gone by the end of the night! People bring stuff with them too.

prettyLittlefool · 21/06/2023 20:07

Always 2 burgers each regardless of other food

fetchacloth · 21/06/2023 20:11

I'd say that's just fine really. 🙂

WonderingWanda · 21/06/2023 20:11

I would do burgers sausages and kebabs but just do a few more of each of those. Sounds lovely

coxesorangepippin · 21/06/2023 20:12

You need oven chips, baguette and baked spuds

And a Victoria sponge

Most men in my experience, but some ladies aren't keen on them so that might bring the numbers down.

^^

MN at it's finest love it

😄

I did a barbecue for 40 last year and planned a bit less than you and had almost half left 😭.

But it was 35 degrees so I think people had smaller appetites.

SleeplessinScarbourough · 21/06/2023 20:15

Your guests are very lucky, good idea to load up on burgers and sausages- especially burgers- did I miss the dessert options?

Optimist2020 · 21/06/2023 20:22

those are asking re sauces , we’ve got ketchup, burger sauce, bbq sauce , Mayo and spicy Mayo and sweet chilli.

@TravellingJack will have to try Emmenthal cheese , we usually have burger sliced cheese.

@SleeplessinScarbourough Guests are bringing desserts . So far there’s a sponge cake, rum & raisin cheesecake, cupcakes & ice lollies.

we usually only have 10-15 so just want to make sure it’s enough food as don’t want to be that host that didn’t provide enough food 🙈

This is the first mumsnet thread I think I've seen that has planned a sensible amount of food where people won't be going home muttering about being left half starved. Kudos OP.

coeurnoir · 21/06/2023 20:23

My lot are obsessed with drumsticks - but we cook them in the oven and just crisp up on the bbq.

Definitely loads of burgers and sausages and the kebabs sound lush, as do the sides.

Hope you have a brilliant time. What time do you want us? 🤣

CottonSock · 21/06/2023 20:24

I'd keep pork steak. Much easier to cook than a drumstick. Unless you give the drumsticks a go in the oven and just finish on bbq.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/06/2023 20:27

Don't forget m&s pickled crinkle cut gherkins for the burgers.

Foodieasfuck · 21/06/2023 20:29

I’d shove some lamb sticks into the mix as-well. Easy to cook and always go down well - enjoy 😋

WhatInFreshHell · 21/06/2023 20:29

I'm just here for the 'Are you catering for Veggies at all?' post....

AtleastitsnotMonday · 21/06/2023 20:30

With these things the more options you do the more people eat as they tend to have a bit of everything.
I don't think you need jackets and potato salad, remember you also have pasta salad and bread.

If you are doing burgers a few different cheeses sliced thinly can make them feel a bit special. A blue and a chilli cheddar would be good. Also a plate of sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, gherkins, finely diced onion would be nice for people to add as they like.

Also some caramelised onions would also go down well.

SchoolShenanigans · 21/06/2023 20:30

Way too much for me, but I think it's better to over cook and eat the left overs later than undercook and people leave hungry.

I think you could do without the chicken drumsticks.

keyboardkat · 21/06/2023 20:35

Where's the basket of gorgeous bread?

The rest is just right and is what I am used to getting at BBQs. I am always a guest, never do them myself, I'm useless at catering for a crowd!

thestorm · 21/06/2023 20:38

Your bbq plans are perfect!
