To think filing nails on public transport is grim?

I can understand makeup. I can't understand why anyone would think it ok to file their nails on a bus or train. The noise. The nail dust going everywhere. Just grim. aibu?

YANBU see also: painting nails, spraying perfume or using hairspray.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 19/06/2023 09:36

If I broke one of my nails and had sharp bits, I would file it wherever I was.

olivesandcapers · 19/06/2023 09:38

I agree. It is disgusting.
I had a friend who came to visit me once (!) and sat at my clean dining table fling her nails and plucking her chin hair. I said 'do you mind' cut story short we are not in touch. I do not regret. Boundaries it is called. I'd never do that on public transport or someone's house. For that is salon or bathroom. YANBU

I don't like any kind of personal grooming to be honest, including make up and hair, but I know that's not a common view

VenusClapTrap · 19/06/2023 09:41

Not something I’ve ever done, but I don’t think it would bother me in the slightest if I saw someone else do it.

I did once attempt to paint my nails on an aeroplane, about twenty five years ago, and was swiftly told to desist by a stewardess. I was surprised, but thought ‘fair enough’.

Flickersy · 19/06/2023 09:41

Makeup is in the same category.

Public transport is not an appropriate place to be doing your personal grooming.

Softoprider · 19/06/2023 09:44

It wouldn't bother me at all, but at the same time I would be revolted if I saw saw someone picking their nose !

TrashyPanda · 19/06/2023 09:44

Yuk.

also - people with long hair who flip it so it hangs over the back of the seat - right in your face!

Stratocumulus · 19/06/2023 09:46

Years ago I watched a woman do the entire make up thing in an overcrowded train carriage.

It was fascinating to watch and think she could be so bold as to give away her secrets so brazenly.

I guess it probably happens a lot these days but given the dirt (and virus’) one picks up on your hands, I dread to think of the bacteria such activities introduce to the products from that.

Growlybear83 · 19/06/2023 09:52

I would find someone filing their nails far less offensive than putting on their make up, but unless you're just filing down a broken nail, no form of personal grooming is necessary on public transport.

Berlinlover · 19/06/2023 10:04

Make up I find interesting to watch. Filing nails? Utterly disgusting.

msmonstera · 19/06/2023 10:10

Man in my office comes in in the morning, lifts up his shirt and sprays himself with deodorant. In the office. I am currently wishing him dead.

QueefQueen80s · 19/06/2023 10:12

Yeah the nail dust everywhere is grim. Or clipping nails. But why a problem with makeup? It's not going on anyone else.

I do this on trains and buses, better than me smelling funky after a speed walk to the station 😆

itslikethis · 19/06/2023 10:21

Yes it's nasty but so many people seem to do it. Also cutting nails on the train and leaving all the clippings around. Gross.

Tracker1234 · 19/06/2023 10:23

Why would you spray deodorant in public?? I hate seeing women putting on make up in public and dont travel by public transport very much now. I do though remember the days when I used to have to spend 3 days in a clients office and it was 100 miles away. I would leave early and then when I was very near the offices I would pull into a parking space near the offices and do my makeup in the car.

Why?

A Friends son died of an asthma attack because of someone spraying deodorant in an enclosed space. So fucking selfish.

MaggieFS · 19/06/2023 10:34

Why is putting on make up offensive? It doesn't leave any filings or smells behind?

This reminds me of the dude who used to sit at the next desk to me at work who came in every morning and started putting moisturiser all over his face (although the lifting up of the shirt is particularly nasty and I didn’t have to endure that, thankfully!) He used so much it made squelchy noises and he used the whole flat palm on each hand as if he was washing his face 😂🤢

nosykids · 19/06/2023 10:41

It wouldn't even occur to me that this was a problem - I don't do it (as I don't particularly look after my nails) but I wouldn't think someone filing their nails was disgusting.

nosykids · 19/06/2023 10:46

People are so squeamish - it's just keratin.

I do agree about spray deodorant though - imposing any sort of smell/fumes on others, especially in a confined space, is really antisocial.

megletthesecond · 19/06/2023 10:50

Yanbu. Doing a broken nail quickly is OK. Two hands isn't. I always file my nails in the garden to keep the dust outside.

I wouldn't call it offensive.

But I don't think it's necessary to do it in public.

I'm with you.

I agree. It’s disgusting and unhygienic. Although not as bad as clipping toe nails on public transport, which I’ve seen. Vile.
