AIBU to worry that there are no insects in my house tonight?

The windows have been open all day and this evening; the lights are on, but there is not a single moth or buzzing creature in my house at all.

We've still not mowed after 'no mow May' so there are lots of flowers everywhere, but only a few bees.

Has anyone else found this?

SAME. When I was a child I remember if you opened the window in summer and a light was on there'd be loads of them in moments. Now barely anything expect the odd tiny moth

5foot5 · 17/06/2023 22:03

Nope.
Lots of bees and other insects in my garden.
I have a small pond and I see bees and wasps coming down for a drink quite regularly

Haggisfish3 · 17/06/2023 22:03

Yep. Insect apocalypse is happening right in front of us.

whiteroseredrose · 17/06/2023 22:04

I know. I used to keep the windows shut because there were so many. I'm quite worried now.

@5foot5 good to hear there are still some around.

I daren’t open my windows without nets on the inside to catch a million things that venture in, we also have screens on the doors. Scottish midges are vicious 😂

Plump82 · 17/06/2023 22:06

Not quite the same as I'm happy not to have fruit flies but this year so far I've not had a single one, while last year I couldn't get rid of them.

Maraudingmarauders · 17/06/2023 22:06

I wouldn't worry, they're all in our house.

CinnabarRed · 17/06/2023 22:07

i have loads of bees and flies here - South Bucks.

i don’t recall seeing many wasps so far.

whiteroseredrose · 17/06/2023 22:08

@PinkPlanter I remember Scottish midges from the Isle of Mull years ago. They were incredible!

ltappleby · 17/06/2023 22:08

Nope as per usual lots of flies and bees finding their way in

OoohLaLaLa · 17/06/2023 22:08

They’re plentiful where I am! Covered in sodding bites. Rural area though.

DoThePropeller · 17/06/2023 22:08

They are all at mine, I left my back door open while I did bedtime and came back to around 10 flies, two crane flies and a dragonfly!

beeonmybonnett · 17/06/2023 22:09

Is that not a good thing? I hate the buggers coming into my house. They can stay outside and I’ll be happy.

Phoenix76 · 17/06/2023 22:18

This is interesting, all week we've been pestered by bugs in the house but tonight it's eerily quiet, wonder if it's got something to do with the thunderstorm warnings, they've gone to another place.....

847arc · 17/06/2023 22:20

My garden has a healthy population, I’ve spent the afternoon weeding and am covered in bites. Plenty of bees too though, I’m pleased to say.

whiteroseredrose · 17/06/2023 22:23

I'm glad to hear that some of you have got them.

Absolutely hopping with insects here. A fair amount of diversity. And the spiders have spawn inside (their sprogs are very cute). I don't doubt that insect populations are being decimated, but they seem to be doing ok in this neck of the woods. Though haven't been dive-bombed by a crane fly yet this year. Can't say I'm missing them.

Blarn · 17/06/2023 22:30

I always think that if we've driven a longish way in Summer, especially on country roads. My dad's car used to be covered in insect splats, the windscreen, bonnet, number plate. Ours barely anything. I try to do my bit: we don't use pesticides or weedkiller, we have a mown lawn and a wild bit plus a good mix of flowers. Every now and then I do wonder where the decline in insects is going to lead too.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/06/2023 22:31

Fucking loads of them here. Count your blessings!

Sux2buthen · 17/06/2023 22:31

We've had constant bee swarms around here, daily posts of new ones being moved along by beekeepers or whoever does it.
Lots of the usual bugs but happily not too many wasps yet. Arseholes

whoruntheworldgirls · 17/06/2023 22:31

I've got loads!!!! So many flies/daddy long legs/morhs, also bees keep getting in so constantly having to catch them and move them to the flowers.
It's either lights or windows here.

Nagado · 17/06/2023 22:31

There aren’t many spiders about either. Everything around here is fairly natural. Lots of wild spaces and nobody has plastic grass, but there’s a definite shortage of everything. The birds have either been on a rampage or will be going very hungry.

FluffMagnet · 17/06/2023 22:32

Weirdly we've just spent the day driving in France and werr remarking at the absolute state of our windscreen. I remember having loads of insects on the windscreen of cars when I was younger (and back in the early 00s, the horror of cycling whilst wearing copious amounts of lipgloss), yet in the UK now my car remains remarkably clean. It is worrying.

Softoprider · 17/06/2023 22:33

Plenty of insects in my garden and I am in West Yorks
