AIBU to worry that there are no insects in my house tonight?

The windows have been open all day and this evening; the lights are on, but there is not a single moth or buzzing creature in my house at all.

We've still not mowed after 'no mow May' so there are lots of flowers everywhere, but only a few bees.

Has anyone else found this?

To be fair, I live right next to a river and lots of trees/greenery

blobby10 · 18/06/2023 08:11

Definitely Not as many buzzing insects around this year as usual in my house - East Mids. Also noticed fewer whilst walking along the cliffs in Cornwall last week 😢x my dads pineapple
bush had loads of bees on it yesterday however which is a positive sign I hope but his horses haven’t needed fly spray yet and they are usually covered in the stuff this time of year 😢

CalmDownBoris72 · 18/06/2023 08:15

We have loads of flies, loads of green insects in the garden but not a massive amount of bees yet but they don’t usually come until our raspberry plants have fruited and they’re nowhere near yet. I think the raspberries are going to be late this year.

Town in rural area, at least 3 moths flew in last night as hall window open and dc left light on.
We had a may bug fly in recently, they are loud!

RaininSummer · 18/06/2023 08:37

It is worrying. I have a garden with flowers and stuff yet so far no ladybirds, no hoverflies, rarely a bee or butterfly. So sad and scary.

iwishiwasonacruise · 18/06/2023 08:42

Plenty in the Essex/greater London border! Literally getting bitten to death every evening as soon as it's past 7pm and daren't even go near a light switch indoors. Happened to leave the tiny extractor light on by mistake last night and the kitchen was full of moths, gnats and daddy long legs type flying things :(

PimpMyFridge · 18/06/2023 08:42

Agree with op. The numbers of insects I see/get in my house are nothing compared to when I was a child and I'm not even 50 yet. Sure I still see them, but the variety and number is far far less.
When the pollinators go we're screwed.

toycat · 18/06/2023 08:44

Plenty of insects in and outside our house in Manchester. We had a huge moth the other night roaming around the house! I will say less bees than previous years though, which is worrying. But we have lots of hoverflies and small birds since putting in a little pond

I wouldn't worry, they're all in our house.

Mine too😭.

Cnidarian · 18/06/2023 08:46

Numbers have crashed this year, far far fewer than there should be. So, it begins......

User195376587 · 18/06/2023 08:49

Wasp season soon, I bet they will be still around

DontBeAPrickDarren · 18/06/2023 09:06

Really going to show my ignorance here but we have a yellow flower in the front garden that attracts loads of bees, and a very small white flowering bush thing in the back garden that also gets loads. Few flies, hardly any butterflies. We have a resident bar who seems to return every year so hopefully there’s enough to keep it fed.

I hate creepy crawlies. I splat as many as I can 🤣

Ignorant behaviour, disturbing attitude.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 18/06/2023 09:14

We did return from a few days away to several dead wasps in the house recently.

QueenMegan · 18/06/2023 09:14

Mosquitoes bostards have biten me everywhere even my fandango I knew they'd survive anything

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 18/06/2023 09:18

We have loads of fruit flies in the kitchen if I leave the door open, they are driving me crazy!

Hate to sound stupid, but why the worry? What does it mean if less bugs?

FridayNightDinners · 18/06/2023 09:26

There are fewer insects this year- it’s really worrying. We have a few bees, no butterflies at all.

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 18/06/2023 09:28

Loads of spiders here.

I always think that if we've driven a longish way in Summer, especially on country roads. My dad's car used to be covered in insect splats, the windscreen, bonnet, number plate. Ours barely anything. I try to do my bit: we don't use pesticides or weedkiller, we have a mown lawn and a wild bit plus a good mix of flowers. Every now and then I do wonder where the decline in insects is going to lead too.

As a child in the 1970s we had a special screen for driving in the countryside at night, to protect the windscreen from all the insects. Otherwise you couldn’t see through it.
And yy to a PP who mentioned number plates being covered in splattered insects.
I leave my windows open a few inches at night, no screens. We get the very occasional mosquito. That’s it.

Since reading this thread about a lack of wasps there’s one out by my bloody washing machine. No clean shirts for the kids this week!

crazeekat · 18/06/2023 12:07

plenty of flies and blue bottles up here, don't know what's worse them inside alive or finding them dead's on my window when the cats get them 🤮

Pinkyjack · 18/06/2023 12:09

There isn't half the flying insects a few decades ago.

VPFT · 18/06/2023 12:12

Come to mine; they’re all here!
