To want to go back to 1989 (lighthearted)

Tired Good Night GIF by Max

After a couple of glasses of wine tonight, I’m sat with one of my dds and my dh listening to 80s music channels. The lyrics of Neneh Cherry’s ‘Buffalo Stance’ (of all songs!) has suddenly take me back in time. I’m 16 years of age again, size 10, with bleach blonde hair. I smell of Anais Anais perfume, wearing cycling shorts and am enjoying kissing unsuitable boys in unsuitable nightclubs. This wave of nostalgia has suddenly made me feel really sad and very old. I’ve got two lovely dds and have been married for nearly 25 years, but what I wouldn’t give to go back to 1989, if only for one night. Aibu?!

My best years were 1994- 1996 sixth form. The house parties, the illicit trips to beer gardens and the nights out were just amazing.

Seeleyboo · 16/06/2023 23:01

Thankfully, at last, someone who thi ks like me. Wishing this era so bad I actually think it will happen.

Cheeseplantt · 16/06/2023 23:03

I want to go back to 1997 - 1999 when I was at 6th form. So much fun. My oldest DC had their last a level exam today too which takes me back to my last one. I was so much crazier than them too. I find smells take me back instantly - if only they still made eimpulse o2.

no money man can steal my love. It’s sweetness that I’m thing of!!
apparently she got 4 marriage proposals by letter per day!!!!!!

Thisbastardcomputer · 16/06/2023 23:05

I'd go back in a heartbeat, to have the last year of my dad's life all over again.

ChocolateCoveredCookie · 16/06/2023 23:08

We are the same age op.
I was singing buffalo stance in the kitchen the other day and teen was asking what I was singing.
Oh such happy days. I’m guessing it’s just because it was pre mortgage, bills, 9-5, no responsibilities….those were the days.
Teen must be living his best life now, if I’m around in 36 years I’ll ask him what his best year was.

Sunnydaysareuponus · 16/06/2023 23:12

I had my dd in 1989...34 years ago tomorrow to be exact...

GettingStuffed · 16/06/2023 23:14

I'd be busy changing nappies in 1989. I'd like to go back to 1980 and change my life.

Lemonyyy · 16/06/2023 23:15

I was born in 1989! I wouldn’t mind another crack at 2006-2008 though, they were great fun 🤩

847arc · 16/06/2023 23:15

1989 was awesome, yadnbu.

847arc · 16/06/2023 23:16

Even my teen wants to back to it, my nostalgia is obviously quite persuasive 😂

847arc · 16/06/2023 23:17

*go

Aerin1999 · 16/06/2023 23:18

YES - before mobile phones, iPads, gaming and social media.

I was 20 in 1989. Size 8 in clothes. And my main occupations, looking back, seem to have been cigarettes, alcohol and unsuitable men. Usually in a pub or club.Ah ,the good old days. Now I'm a size 16, haven't smoked for nearly 30 years and have been married for 26 years. I was blasting 80s music earlier in the week while cleaning although I think the one I massacred sang along to was Land Down Under by Men At Work. Life seemed easier then. And I am forever grateful that it was pre-mobiles, so if anyone wants evidence of my partying, they'll have to dig though old photos amd scan 'em. If they had a camera with them, of course. Which was rare.

Almostforgotfathersday · 16/06/2023 23:35

Ahh, I was 11, almost 12 at the local school
disco, dancing with boys and doing dance actions to every song with my friends. Cycling shorts and fluorescent colours…it was the start of it all.
The whole of the 90’s were fantastic, from those early days until 99/2000, the peak years being 93-96/98
And yes…Impulse O2 in the green bottle, I can smell the sweetness now, from a roasting hot summer full of friends, boyfriends and amazing times…aww, how lucky we were, how very lucky

Hellandhighwaters · 16/06/2023 23:39

Thanks for all your answers! I’m glad I’m not being unreasonable. I remember the summer of 1989 being permanently hot and full of fun once my GCSEs were out of the way! My only worries were whether I’d missed a landline call from the current flavour of the week….back in the days when boys had to risk calling the house and speaking to your parents if they wanted to take your out!!

Me too, but mine was born last month. I remember it being a beautiful summer for all sorts of reasons.

Lolaandbehold · 17/06/2023 01:25

Random story about Neneh Cherry. I was working in a hotel in Provence in the summer of 1996. This awesome ex monestry with simple rooms effectively carved into a mountain where the monks used to sleep and which charged an extortionate amount for wealthy Americans (et al) to recreate the effect. Anyway Neneh and boyfriend/husband came to stay. In they came to the former chapel which is now laid out as a private dining room where I was sweeping the floor or some such . Neneh said something to the effect of wanting to rip each others clothes off and shag on the table later when no one was around. Clearly not realising there was a native English speaker in the corner sweeping the floor. No idea if they did so later or not but I presume not since I locked the door behind me when I closed up for the night.

Haven’t thought about that story in years. Buffalo Stance was a great song.

Lolaandbehold · 17/06/2023 01:25

*her husbands clothes rather than mine ^

DramaAlpaca · 17/06/2023 01:30

I'd go back a bit earlier, to 1982. I was doing my A levels, about to go off to university, and life was full of excitement and promise. Don't get me wrong, life's been good and it's all worked out, but sometimes the nostalgia for back then hits me hard and I feel like having a good cry about it.

<disclaimer: I may have had wine tonight>

cassiatwenty · 17/06/2023 01:34

What was life like in 1989?

BlippiIsAnnoying · 17/06/2023 01:36

Oh yes, Neneh Cherry was so cool. I played that album and Soul to Soul's all year!

HarpyValley · 17/06/2023 01:44

I’d go back to 1993 and my first summer in my own flat. I had very little spare money but a great bunch of friends, we always managed to have a good social life on the cheap whether that was round at each other’s flats with a couple of bottles of wine or the couple of friends who were students using their discount to get cheap theatre or gig tickets. I was a size 8 effortlessly and could wear just about anything. And the music was epic (Britpop, grunge 💜). My one “big” luxury was a subscription to Britannia Music to buy another CD or two each month 😄

MrsAvocet · 17/06/2023 02:30

I graduated in 1989 and would happily go back there if I could. I was happy, healthy and had money for the first time ever!
Actually I'm going back to the 90s tomorrow - a 30th anniversary do. Should be good fun. Only thing is we're supposed to go in 90s clothes and whilst I do still have clothes from then, I am too fat for any of them. Think I am going to have to steal my teenage son's prized Guns N Roses 1992 tour t shirt for the night!

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 17/06/2023 03:40

Nope!
1989 was the year my life went tits up. I was 17. Now 34 years later my life US still crap but better.
If I could I'd go back and get birn into a totally different family and try again.
