To want to go back to 1989 (lighthearted)

Tired Good Night GIF by Max

After a couple of glasses of wine tonight, I’m sat with one of my dds and my dh listening to 80s music channels. The lyrics of Neneh Cherry’s ‘Buffalo Stance’ (of all songs!) has suddenly take me back in time. I’m 16 years of age again, size 10, with bleach blonde hair. I smell of Anais Anais perfume, wearing cycling shorts and am enjoying kissing unsuitable boys in unsuitable nightclubs. This wave of nostalgia has suddenly made me feel really sad and very old. I’ve got two lovely dds and have been married for nearly 25 years, but what I wouldn’t give to go back to 1989, if only for one night. Aibu?!

i think I’d go back to the late 90s/early 2000s when I had a gorgeous boyfriend, was a size 10 and spent my life merrily pissing my student loan into the wind on booze, fags and clubbing!

Ambertonix · 17/06/2023 10:33

Oh yes, in a heartbeat but only because i met 1st DH in 1989 so if i went back i would avoid him like the plague and not end up head over heels and moving in together within a year like i did then! Im the same age as you OP and very nostalgic for (some) of the 80s. Such a laid back life then.

If I could go back to the summer I left school, age 16, the best summer of my life I 100% would. Songs also momentarily take me back!

1989 I took my A levels and started university. Lots of going out, clubbing, concerts and a lot of beer. Dd1 is now looking at universities, so I have been thinking a lot about this time.

I remember the Stone Roses and the beginning of the whole Madchester scene (I had a friend at Salford Uni). I was at Leeds and there were loads of concerts: The Sugar Cubes (early Björk), the Ramones... It really was a great time

I went to Glastonbury in 1989 I was 18 and life was bliss 😀😀

So carefree and fun, we traveled all over the uk that summer holiday, surfing, walking, raving in our tiny Peugeot 103!

@areyouhavinglaugh Well I remember the Peugeot 306 and that music from this advert;

To me this sums up the late 1990's perfectly. In fact it was us then.

So much optimism and globalisation round the corner.

Certainly the 1980's were huge in scale and scope. From the New Romantics of the early period and the gradual movement of music to a more soulful vibe with Black Box, Inner City, Alexander O'Neill and Soul To Soul rounding that glorious decade off.

We had some long hot summers and the music scene was perfect. Everything was about human interaction, risk and romance. Not the cold calibrated borrowed-time that social media and phone devices that imprison the younger generation of today. The 1980's was an awesome decade and nothing has ever come close.

I was learning to drive in a Peugeot 205 diesel in 1989!

I want to go back to 1997 - 1999 when I was at 6th form. So much fun. My oldest DC had their last a level exam today too which takes me back to my last one. I was so much crazier than them too. I find smells take me back instantly - if only they still made eimpulse o2.

I was an O2 gal too, I think Happy by Clinique comes pretty close!

I would love to go back to live a day in my body without my poorly knee. In 1989 I was really striking out in the world and two years later in 1991 I bought my first house for £30k a 3 bed semi on my own, I was only early 20s and had a car - a Ford Escort MK3 which I loved. Lord knows how I did it. I had a line of unsuitable boyfriends, smoked, drank and did other things I have now had to give up 😒

To balance it, it wasn't all sweetness as I faced awful sexism. I remember the porno pics on the wall in the traffic office at work, the page 3 pics shoved on my desk, being told I belonged in the kitchen and comments on my skirts (I had to wear a skirt at work).

But to go back just for one day...

Sagittariusrising · 19/06/2023 14:08

I was 20, without a care in the world. Spending all of my salary on clothes, make up and going to pubs/clubs.

I remember seeing Neneh Cherry heavily pregnant on TOTP doing Buffalo Stance and she was amazing. Also Back to Life by Soul to Soul was everywhere that summer. I only have to hear it to be transported back.

Life was so much simpler then and I'd love to go back for a few days, if only to be a size 8 again for a bit 😁

Oblomov23 · 19/06/2023 14:47

I wouldn't go back that far. In fact I don't crave going back. Certain songs remind me of happy times: Black box - Ride on time. Haddaway - what is love; Avicii - Wake me up.
