To think that 5/6 year old little girls don’t need to wear shorts under dresses to “protect their modesty”

Just what the subject like says really. I’d be interested to know other parents thoughts. I’m not a weirdo, this request has been made of my daughters from school and it makes me feel a bit icky.

Re: the question of knickers AND shorts being a bit hot - these are cotton knicker-shorts. DD has these. One garment, cool and covers her nicely.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08DNXV2Z2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Lots of similar around. Do look at the reviews from real customers though re sizing and leg length on amazon.

Personally i have no issue with knickers being seen - they're just a piece of fabric. But as pp have said, often times girls are going into school in knickers which just don't stay put through all the rolling/cartwheeling/climbing/cross legged sitting activities.

The school is trying to find a way to ask parents to send their girls in in bigger knickers which wont shift!

I can see your point about the knicker shorts. But not sure if you've notice the one you've linked refers to the toddler underwear as having "sexy lace" detailing.

The only women I know who do this are pretty fat and do it to stop chub rub. I don't know anyone who wears them otherwise.

This is a good point and also a good idea. I've put on a lot of weight and for the first time I feel uncomfortable wearing dresses because of my thighs rubbing together!

This is bizarre! Maybe 10 years ago, any talk of modesty in clothing was assumed to be backwards, religious and fanatical. Lots of horror expressed that conservative Christian girls were all going to get thrush from wearing Lycra shorts in hot weather. Lots of anger pointing out that we shouldn’t make girls feel responsible for the actions of others because of their clothing choices, that the onus is on the men (usually) to behave appropriately in the first place. I can’t fathom how it’s now become mainstream and expected. They’re just little kids at primary school. Let them be innocent while they still can.

This is my view.

Ladysaurus · 13/06/2023 12:38

Saw a little girl on the bus in culottes made of summer dress material. They looked awesome and super comfy. I was a little jealous.

Shorts shouldn't need to be enforced. But we live in a horrid world where women and girls are often not safe.

Chasingadvice · 13/06/2023 12:38

@MaxwellCat why isn't it practical to to wear shorts under a dress if the child needs to use the toilet? Surely they are just pulled down as her underwear is. Do you not pull your shorts/trousers down to use the toilet?

Humerushummus · 13/06/2023 12:38

So glad we have moved on from vest and knickers for PE. My worst memories from school

NerrSnerr · 13/06/2023 12:39

To all the people who say that well fitting pants should be enough- would you be happy to go and walk into your local Tesco and pull up your dress and show your well fitting pants off to everyone? Is that ok? What it a man decided to do his shopping in just his boxers, as long as his genitals are not showing?

If us adults are not routinely showing our knickers in public why should our children? Mine doesn't want to. Why is that a bad thing?

That was in response to a poster who suggested playsuits 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had quoted the post…

TJsAunt · 13/06/2023 12:40

The people typing that they put shorts under a skirt because there are paedophiles... do you let your daughter wear a bikini/swimming costume at the beach/swimming pool? Surely that's a contradiction?

InAFettle · 13/06/2023 12:40

DappledThings · 13/06/2023 11:34

I'll buy some if DD starts asking but so far she's happy as she is. Are cycling shorts not really sweaty in hot weather?

Lots of supermarkets have started bringing in playsuits in school gingham which seem like a good idea but I can't think that anything that requires small children to strip.off entirely when they may have left it late to get to the toilet is a good idea and for their entire outfit to be sitting on the floor of the loo.

People who wear playsuits/jumpsuits to festivals similarly baffle me.

Not the point of the thread but I’ve got several jumpsuits I can just pull to the side of my crotch at festivals. Not something kids could do easily, but that might clear up some bafflement. long legged ones… just as baffled as you.

Cam22 · 13/06/2023 12:40

Wearing shorts under dresses is a step too far. For heaven’s sake your child is going to school which is a safe zone. It’s insulting to little boys or men to imply the shorts are worn for fear of them.

Even if the shorts are cotton, the added material will make the female child feel less comfortable - in hot weather or any other weather. Cycle shorts which are made of Lycra would be horrendous to wear. Where is all this going to end? No wonder children have issues when parents have such issues. 🙄

As an adult, I cannot imagine wearing shorts under a skirt or dress. It’s an utterly bonkers idea. Girls should not have to do so either.

ejbaxa · 13/06/2023 12:42

All the kids need to wear t shirt and shorts and consign impractical school dresses to the history book.

We rightly apply different standards to 5 year old children. I also would not expect an adult to have a temper tantrum or to shout no loudly if they do not want to go somewhere with their family. I also would not expect an adult in a supermarket to wear a tutu and fairy wings or a spiderman costume - all perfectly acceptable for 5 year old children.

CurlewKate · 13/06/2023 12:44

I wish people wouldn't use words like "showing off" or "flashing" pants. It's all part of the appalling sexualisation of girl children that for some reason we are letting happen...

SadAsHell · 13/06/2023 12:45

I'm a secondary teacher, the amount of girls that come in their school skirts and sit on front of me with their skirts yanked up and legs wide open and I am seeing all sorts of stuff I did not sign up for in my job description! And that's secondary aged! I wish the school skirts were done away with tbh!

I actually wear bicycle shorts under my dresses. 1 to stop chub rub and 2 because I like mini dresses but can't be dealing with yanking it down all the time. With the shorts underneath I don't care if it blows up in the wind or moves a certain way when I'm trying to sit down. But I get your point OP. That was my choice, not an enforcement.

hattyhathat · 13/06/2023 12:45

Whostoblame · 13/06/2023 11:18

I put shorts under my daughter's dresses and skirts, she's constantly cartwheeling, handstanding etc and I don't want anyone seeing anything. I want her to have the freedom of wearing a dress or skirt if she wants to but have the security that her privates remain so. I don't see an issue with it? If your skirt blows up in the wind I'm sure you don't just let it fly up and let everyone see your undercrackers, you would pull it back down.

Cam22 · 13/06/2023 12:46

Oh good grief. The irony.

Runforthehills754 · 13/06/2023 12:46

Modesty - behaviour, manner, or appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency.

Absolutely gross when applied to children playing. The children are playing not being improper or indecent.Yes put shorts on them if you want to avoid people being perverts but not to "protect their modesty" 🤮

Lancasterel · 13/06/2023 12:47

I agree however my just-7 year old sometimes chooses too, nothing to do with me - I think just because other girls in her class do!

So you would be absolutely fine walking around in your underwear in public and think it's ok for boys to run around in their underwear at school?

Many of us are saying it's about not showing your private underwear off if you're doing cartwheels etc and it doesn't have to be cycling shorts in hot weather.

My DD would be so embarrassed if everyone saw her underwear so would just not join in with her friends. My DS would be the same if anyone saw his pants. I wouldn't want anyone to see my pants either.

7eleven · 13/06/2023 12:47

Yeah, modesty is the wrong word.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/06/2023 12:48

I've always put cycling shorts under DDs school dresses if she isn't wearing tights. For me her knickers shouldn't be on show, and its an easy fix

Most girls i know who are late teens/early 20s all wear cycling shorts under dresses and skirts all the time anyway.

randomsabreuse · 13/06/2023 12:48

More comfortable for slides, hot playground equipment.

Narrow hipped girls might well find them more comfortable depending on skin type to avoid friction at the top of the inner thighs.

Choices are good.

Bubblyb00b · 13/06/2023 12:48

I always wondered why little girls underwear was so flimsy and made of such thin fabric. It really does not work with child being active, it pretty much does not do what it supposed to do - it does not cover adequately and does not protect from dirt. I think wearing cycling shorts gives little girls more chances to be free and active. Its not "modesty" as in covering kids up head to toe for whatever reason - its literally stopping them from flashing everyone occasionally and from sitting on the ground (for example) with pretty much bare bum.
