To insist DS uses bum bag on holiday?

DS and friend (both 18) are going on their first holiday abroad together. They are pretty sensible but possibly a bit unworldly.

I think they should each be taking bum bag with RFID protection for their passport, phone, cards and small amount of cash but DS is resisting. They are going to a Greek island for less than a week, taking carry on bags only.

I'm a bit anxious - but trying not to show it! - and may be going overboard [getting the contact details of the local British consulate] but I don't want them to come into difficulties that could be avoided. Any suggestions much appreciated! TIA

You can’t really insist anything - he’s 18. How will you know what he’s carrying with him on holiday anyway. Fwiw I’ve never carried a bum bag on holiday.

Let him manage it, he doesn’t need to feel responsible for your anxiety. Let him enjoy his holiday.

DustyLee123 · 09/06/2023 14:10

He’s 18, you can’t insist anything.
You need to let go.

CaloundraBlues · 09/06/2023 14:10

You sound completely overbearing and you're going to take all the fun out of their holiday. Just let them go and have fun, they are adults and they don't have to do what you suggest

TokyoSushi · 09/06/2023 14:10

If he's 18 you can suggest anything you like, but ultimately you've no control over what he actually does!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 09/06/2023 14:11

He’s 18 and going to Greece not Afghanistan, calm down.

Passports leave in hotel safe don’t carry them around with you for a start.…

LordEmsworth · 09/06/2023 14:11

How many times a day do you plan to ring him, to nag him to put his bumbag on? What are you going to do if he doesn't wear it? How do you plan to enforce your insistence?

Obviously your idea is sensible, but the more you push it - the more he will resist. You can't physically make him wear it, you can only point out the risks and let him crack on.

WedTheBed · 09/06/2023 14:11

No 😂 he’s 18.

give him some credit.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/06/2023 14:12

He's eighteen! You don't get to insist on anything 🙈

travailtotravel · 09/06/2023 14:12

Your only job is to insist they have travel insurance (or buy it for them as a gift). The rest, you live, you learn!

Boomboom22 · 09/06/2023 14:13

Can't he take his normal manbag for phone and cash? A cross body one they all wear now, noone wears bumbags. Where would you even buy one?

JanesBlond · 09/06/2023 14:13

You need to calm down. They will be fine! It is Greece, it will be full of tourists and is a perfectly safe destination visited by thousands of Brits each year without issues.

ladykale · 09/06/2023 14:13

You sound crazy, no offence.

ladykale · 09/06/2023 14:14

Do you carry that when you go on holiday?

HappiDaze · 09/06/2023 14:14

Yup you're a bit insane

DustyLee123 · 09/06/2023 14:14

I use a bum-bag, and see plenty of others using them for dog walking and holidays, but no 18 year olds !

Augend23 · 09/06/2023 14:15

I don't really see why a holiday in Greece is higher risk than a trip to London or whatever tbh. You can't make him. Will he take a rucksack for water etc? I'd leave passport etc wherever I was staying

bellinisurge · 09/06/2023 14:15

You can suggest a sling bag, don't call it a bum bag. But leave him be. Screwing up is how we learn as adults.

Colinfromaccounts · 09/06/2023 14:16

😂 he will be finding this all very cringe

by the way, do you think there might be a connection between your overbearing anxiety and his unworldliness, hmm?

Slaistery · 09/06/2023 14:17

Is this a covert approach to ensuring he won’t get laid?

BusMumsHoliday · 09/06/2023 14:17

You cannot make another adult in a different country to you wear a bum bag if they don't want to. It's physically impossible.

BotterMon · 09/06/2023 14:17

Poor bloke. If he loses stuff he'll learn. Stop helicoptering an adult!

ApolloandDaphne · 09/06/2023 14:18

Don't be daft. You can't insist anything of the sort. Surely they will put their passports and other valuable in a safe?

Shinyandnew1 · 09/06/2023 14:18

What if you insist, he says ok to shut you up and then he doesn’t do it. What will that achieve? Encouraging him to have to lie to you seems rather counter-productive, doesn’t it?

Cherryana · 09/06/2023 14:19

As someone late to bum bags being worn across the body, in op’s denfence, they are very useful.

Cherryana · 09/06/2023 14:19

Why can’t I spell?
