First barbecue of the year today.

Retrieve barbecue from back of shed, give it a good scrub because although it was put away clean (or DH sys it was) and covered, it's sticky and mucky after 9 months. Search for charcoal. Search for firelighter thingies. Get the thing going. Stand around while it gets to the right stage for cooking. Start cooking the stuff. Constant debate about whether it's done or not. Multiple trips back into the house to get salad, salad dressing, cheese slices, another beer, tomato ketchup, another plate, another spoon, forks. Then all the clearing away and disposing of the charcoal.

Total faff.

YANBU. I’ve got a gas one (cue shrieks of horror from the purists) and it’s still a pain in the arse. I don’t even like BBQ food Hmm

marshmallowsforbreakfast · 04/06/2023 19:23

I'm with you, can't stand a bbq. I could cook a sausage very easily in the oven, pop it in a bun with some salad and ketchup and sit in the garden and eat it. Why would I want to add additional faff for not very nice/hygienic food?

Bigglebiggle · 04/06/2023 19:23

I love a BBQ, at someone else's house 😁

Cupcakegirl13 · 04/06/2023 19:24

Totally agree OP ! The idea is much more appealing than the reality.

Playgrind · 04/06/2023 19:24

God, I think this every year.

DH loves a BBQ so at least I can leave it to him to clean it, get charcoals etc But the constant to-ing and fro-ing for ketchup, backing, salad spoils the fun. I need BBQ life hacks lol. Maybe I can rope the kids in

DutchCowgirl · 04/06/2023 19:24

YABU bbq is DH his hobby. Means no cooking for me!

IhearyouClemFandango · 04/06/2023 19:25

A lot of that is first BBQ trials. As in, the more you do it the easier it is.

DH is a bit of a BBQ fan and has a few different ones. A friend came over today so he did a rotisserie chicken over a smoker, plus some kebabs etc. A little prep but then we could leave it to get on with it. We have a chimney starter to get the charcoal going.

Make a salad, coleslaw etc, crack on.

Not a massive amount more work than cooking normally once you're set up and used to it.

Dammitthisisshit · 04/06/2023 19:25

Heathens.
It tastes better.
Its the only way to legitimately get others round for a meal, supply raw meat, and get them to cook it for you.
what’s not to like 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jojoanna · 04/06/2023 19:26

Totally agree , complete faff when you can just cook in the oven and eat in the garden.

Exactly Grin

BurntOutGirl · 04/06/2023 19:28

I can't see the point of one either. I cook the same item's on it that l would in my oven/grill/Foreman.... for less hassle

GulesMeansRed · 04/06/2023 19:28

Every time DH and the kids want a barbecue my heart sinks.

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2023 19:29

omg we bbq about 8 months of the year 😂
Dh is the cook inside or outside. I’m usually in charge of salads and we actually end up eating inside most often but sometimes we eat outside. We have big doors that open up from our kitchen to the patio and bbq (which stays out all year round) so it’s not a hassle. It’s a really healthy way to cook food I think - not that it’s a motivating factor for us! - and the dc all get involved too. We eat so much food cooked on the bbq not just meat.

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 04/06/2023 19:29

Tend to find the men just love incinerating stuff on the bbq, it's never done a lot for me, l am on my own and just had cold egg and potatoe tortilla with tomatoes, took two seconds to prepare and clean up.

mynameiscalypso · 04/06/2023 19:30

I hate them too. Mainly because so many people do terrible BBQs. My heart sinks when my ILs invite us for a BBQ. They buy the cheapest meat possible (they are not struggling by any means), always cook it badly and serve it with the most unappetising selection of sides.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/06/2023 19:30

You get good at it, plus a gas bbq is easier, you need one with lava rocks so tastes smoky. We've had ours 15 years, just looking to update as Webber have a huge sale on. I was a die hard charcoal girl until I went to South African friend's BBQ and they had had and it tasted exactly the same.

Always this.

Tunafiiiish · 04/06/2023 19:31

yabu. If a BBQ is a chore, you are doing it wrong Grin

Davros · 04/06/2023 19:31

I used to think I liked a BBQ but I've banned them now. Way too much hassle. Just cook ffs and eat in the garden! Mind you, I don't do any cooking, deliberately because I do everything else

bibbityboppityboo · 04/06/2023 19:31

I bloody love a bbq! Food tastes amazing, lots of options, can eat in the garden, screams summer etc etc

Hugs fan! And to me, easier than a roast as my duties are salads and fish 😂

Starlightstarbright1 · 04/06/2023 19:32

i agree completely . I bought some really nice burger’s yesterday- fresh cobs all done with onion rings in the air fryer - with a paper liner - so much quicker and easier

tiredmama23 · 04/06/2023 19:32

Hate them. I went to one last weekend and didn't eat anything, instead I snuck my own pasta pot in in my handbag and ate that without anyone realising😂 I'm terrified of food poisoning so it's my worst nightmare tbh

Teabab · 04/06/2023 19:32

We usually just use a disposable! Don't have them often though, I know you can do what you want in your garden but no one else seems to really have them here and feel bad making the air stink when the weathers nice. I do like eating outside in summer though- baked potatoes, fresh salad, corn on the cob, chicken- yum!

Xrays · 04/06/2023 19:32

Yanbu.

Step away from cooking outside on fires. Too much faff.
