to think barbecues just aren't worth the effort?

First barbecue of the year today.

Retrieve barbecue from back of shed, give it a good scrub because although it was put away clean (or DH sys it was) and covered, it's sticky and mucky after 9 months. Search for charcoal. Search for firelighter thingies. Get the thing going. Stand around while it gets to the right stage for cooking. Start cooking the stuff. Constant debate about whether it's done or not. Multiple trips back into the house to get salad, salad dressing, cheese slices, another beer, tomato ketchup, another plate, another spoon, forks. Then all the clearing away and disposing of the charcoal.

Total faff.

We BBQ most weekends from May to September if we are at home.
Generally I think that most people who hate them arent doing them right

Agree! Baffled by all the talk of sausages and burgers. You can cook whatever meat you want on them, and loads of other stuff too. Why would a bbq automatically mean sausages and burgers?

TheFormidableMrsC · 04/06/2023 20:38

I love the odd BBQ but prefer if somebody else is doing it. It's just me and DS so I buy a disposable one. I partially cook things inside and then stick them on the BBQ for 10 minutes. It's less faff and easy to clear up. I do only do it about twice a year though.

Mmhmmn · 04/06/2023 20:40

@marshmallowsforbreakfast totally agree. BBQ food gives me the ick. MILgave me pink pink chicken thing at a BBQ few yrs back. Oven/grill all the way!

Zarataralara · 04/06/2023 20:40

I’ve never owned a bbq, never missed owning one.

Roussette · 04/06/2023 20:42

We barbecue a lot and no we don't all do food that's burnt on the outside and raw in the middle... whoever does that or goes to friends who do that, you need some new friends Grin

Last night was steak with a homemade chilli butter on top, bbqd peppers and courgettes, mushrooms done in foil on the barbecue, blue cheese pasta salad, and green salad. Bloody delicious.

Today was spare ribs that fell off the bone with bbq potatoes and coleslaw.

Next week homemade beefburgers some time or other.

There is nothing like that smokey flavour, sticking it in a frypan or under the grill is just. not. the. same.

BeverlyHa · 04/06/2023 20:44

we just use the grill and oven for all kinds of meats anyway

StripeyDeckchair · 04/06/2023 20:46

Totally agree
They're a short cut to food poisoning.
I refuse to do them. If DP & the kids want one I'll sit back & let them get on with it.

I don't like BBQ food so am happy to give them a miss

(Unless it's an Aussie BBQ, they know what they're doing)

Hidinginaonesie · 04/06/2023 20:46

YANBU.
I never find bbqing a faff!
But maybe that’s because DH does it.

Rosebel · 04/06/2023 20:46

I love a BBQ but DH hates them so we only have a BBQ at other people's houses.

greenacrylicpaint · 04/06/2023 20:47

bbq and raquelette grills.
to be tolerated once a year.
at most.

I hate the salads that scream food poisoning to me. and the potatos that are raw inside and burnt on the outside.
sausages with bits of grass on it.

Headingforholidays · 04/06/2023 20:48

Love a BBQ - we have one every summer weekend if we can. Gas BBQ with a cover so keep it out all year, quick and easy to get started. Big sliding doors open from kitchen to patio so no trouble nipping in and out.

This post confirms to me that those who don’t like them are doing them wrong. Grass in your sausage? Salads giving you food poisoning? WTF?! 😂

Inastatus · 04/06/2023 20:49

We love a bbq. Just had spatchcock piri piri chicken and corn on the cob on ours tonight - was delicious. DH is a very good cook and we enjoy being outside cooking, eating and drinking.

Iamnotalemming · 04/06/2023 20:50

Get a gas one. Makes the whole thing so much easier and more enjoyable. You can just have a BBQ on a whim when the weather is good.

Roussette · 04/06/2023 20:50

They're a short cut to food poisoning.

We've been barbecuing all out married lives... nearly 40 years, no food poisoning!

You can only know people who don't know how to barbecue. If I cook chicken on the bone, I half cook it first. Sausages cooked slow so they're cooked through. Chicken kebabs again slow cooking until the end. And so on...

Sausages with grass on them? Who on earth do some posters eat with??

Inastatus · 04/06/2023 20:50

@greenacrylicpaint - definitely don’t like the sound of your bbq’s 😅

GulesMeansRed · 04/06/2023 20:52

I've never had food poisoning from a bbq either. Still think they're a faff.

Cooking inside, eating outside is the way to go.

Wexone · 04/06/2023 20:54

don't get them what so ever. and it's like everyone I know is obsessed with them as soon as a tiny but of sunshine is out oh must have a bbq. yet its too cold too sit outside to eat. most too are always burnt food. I find it far easier to cook inside and bring it outside - that is on the three whole days it's warm enough to eat outside where I live.

Postbox87 · 04/06/2023 20:56

BBQ meat tastes so much better, and gives me a day off cooking as OH does it all. BBQ's for the win.

ToeJammed · 04/06/2023 20:57

I love them. We have both gas and charcoal BBQs so we use whichever we fancy.
Good meat and fish is a must, so good steaks, fresh burgers, fresh salmon, chicken breasts, marinaded in what you fancy.
Salad and sides taken outside in one go on a tray.
Crack open the beers while the food is cooking.
Knowing how to cook stuff is a must to avoid half raw or burnt food.
Grill rack etc goes in a bag of oven pride when cooled overnight then gets rinsed off with the hose the following day.
We've had one several times recently.
Love them.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/06/2023 20:57

I can't stand them and I don't like barbecued meat either ! Realise I'm probably massively in the minority.

getafringenotbotox · 04/06/2023 20:59

I have this. It's so much easier

to think barbecues just aren't worth the effort?
SimonsCow · 04/06/2023 20:59

DH loves them. I find them a massive faff too but if he’s the one doing the work then I haven’t really got a leg to stand on

Doggolover2 · 04/06/2023 21:00

I love a bbq but it’s always a disposable one and only for me, DH and the dog (will go to friends bbq but cba to host one 😂 )so it’s easy days, while prob not environmentally friendly it suits us. No pre cleaning and at the end fill it with water leave it half an hour then put it out.

Though I will admit re food poisoning happy to cook burgers on it but always buy cooked chicken and add it for a quick char xxx

Hayliebells · 04/06/2023 21:02

My DH is obsessed, he has two fancy expensive ones which apparently do different things and are apparently both necessary. He does everything, prep clean up, salads, the lot, so I just let him crack on. It's a hobby, it could be worse, it could be golf, or cycling. And I get fed, what is usually a pretty good meal too, so what's not to like?
