to think barbecues just aren't worth the effort?

First barbecue of the year today.

Retrieve barbecue from back of shed, give it a good scrub because although it was put away clean (or DH sys it was) and covered, it's sticky and mucky after 9 months. Search for charcoal. Search for firelighter thingies. Get the thing going. Stand around while it gets to the right stage for cooking. Start cooking the stuff. Constant debate about whether it's done or not. Multiple trips back into the house to get salad, salad dressing, cheese slices, another beer, tomato ketchup, another plate, another spoon, forks. Then all the clearing away and disposing of the charcoal.

Total faff.

Short cut to food poisoning 😂😂 never had food poisoning from a bbq. We use a temperature probe on meats as do family members who also do bbqs. Keeps meat juicy but cooked. Most of the people on this thread have clearly never had a good bbq experience which is a shame.

RocketIceLollie · 04/06/2023 21:04

BBQs are very overrated in my opinion. Normally tastes too much of charcoal and burntness. Today we had a family get together in the garden at my parents for my brother's birthday and we just did a finger buffet from the kitchen and it tasted much better and was less work for all involved so everyone could enjoy themselves without someone slaving over a BBQ, usually Dad.

Smoky1107 · 04/06/2023 21:04

Womencanlift totally agree! We've just had chicken and a lovely salad. Chicken cooked on the electric bbq and now the plate is soaking ready to be used tomorrow. We love ours

DoubleYolker · 04/06/2023 21:05

I love our gas BBQ. Just had a dinner of chicken and vegetable kebabs with grilled halloumi and aubergines with lovely salads. Delicious. Not a big fan of sausages/burgers. But I agree with you about charcoal BBQS, they’re a PITA.

DanceMonster · 04/06/2023 21:05

But I thought one of your problems with bbq’s was carrying stuff outside? If you cook inside, you would still have to take everything outside once it’s cooked.

I loathe them. Very few people know how to bbq properly in the UK, we weren’t made for it!
burnt on the outside, raw on the inside.
stinks the garden out and those of neighbours .
impossible to eat outside because of flies, wasps etc.

I live in the UK and have never been to a bbq like this! We do flatbreads, spiced lamb, fish, paella (mostly this we love it), koftas in the summer. Proper bratwurst in the winter.

I hope I never have to experience the bbqs you’ve had to go to, if I had I’d probably hate them too 😂

Pteryl · 04/06/2023 21:11

Reading the threads, it seems like a lot of people go to bbqs where people can’t cook! I find the bbq no different to cooking inside and I get to be out having fun watching the kids in the pool, chatting with friends etc.

Happyher · 04/06/2023 21:12

I hate barbecues. I only had a charcoal one but gave it away as it took so long to get hot enough. Lots of food prep, food comes in fits and starts, usually burnt or undercooked. Much prefer to cook something inside to eat outside.

TeenLifeMum · 04/06/2023 21:12

I prepared kebabs (chicken and veg) yesterday but then shoved them under the grill in my self cleaning pyro oven… So much easier. I will need to do a bbq at some point to justify the one we bought last year 😆

ostwest · 04/06/2023 21:14

Only read your headline and I am saying 👍👍👍

We just cook the meat/food we’d normally eat, just on the bbq instead of the oven/grill. So roast chicken on the spit roast, steaks, lamb chops, halloumi, chicken and roasted veg skewers.
A bbq is just a cooking instrument; having a bbq doesn’t mean it has to be sausages and burgers!

I agree. I like to prepare veg skewers ahead of time especially if there are a lot of people coming so it’s less faff on the day and I can just cook off the koftas etc.
But I guess for some people they expect sausages and burgers at a BBQ? 🤔

EatYourVegetables · 04/06/2023 21:16

BLASPHEMY!!!!

AlienSupaStar · 04/06/2023 21:16

You are doing it wrong! My chicken came out perfect with a lovely smokey taste. Had to do yorkshires in the oven but everything else was outside and absolutely delicious.

VeronicaFranklin · 04/06/2023 21:17

Totally agree. Love the idea of them. Absolute shit show of multitasking to make one happen, flies on salad, stale bread within minutes of being outside, tons of food left over, no one helps clean up. Hungry again an hour later.

jackstini · 04/06/2023 21:19

It's worth it for the taste
But we only use disposables - all the cleaning etc is just not happening!!

universityhelp · 04/06/2023 21:19

I do think bbq food tastes better, obviously as long as nice sausages/burgers/meat in the first place. I also agree about the faff at home of bringing things out (if just doing for immediate family). So, I like bbqs at other people's houses if they are good cooks, or at home if we invite people over (I don't cook it though).

I feel like I’m in a parallel universe. Why would you cook more food than you need just because you’re cooking it on a bbq instead of in the oven? And why are you hungry again an hour later? Cooking something on a bbq doesn’t change the properties of the food, it should keep you just as full as it would do if it was cooked inside.
I reckon from reading this thread that bbqs addle some people’s brains.

Beaverbridge · 04/06/2023 21:20

Can't stand them. Just cook indoors then go outside if its nice weather.

Generally only get wasps later in the year, like August.

Unfortunately you get veggies all year round 😉

Funny!!😉😄

Hopefully the guests help with clearing up. But I agree recyclable disposables are great. I usually rinse off any residue before recycling.

megletthesecond · 04/06/2023 20:06

Yanbu. Can't stand BBQ's. Rubbish for veggies and attracts wasps.

Veggie and tofu kebabs with a soy sauce, brown sugar and rice vinegar mix brushed on while grilling. Or richmond veggie sausages seasoned with Old Bay and onion powder. In a butty with onions. Bloody gorgeous.

girlfriend44 · 04/06/2023 21:23

Not into them nowadays. Easier to just cook the food inside and take it outside to eat.

chaosmaker · 04/06/2023 21:27

Air Fryer, that's all I have to say about that!

Spanielsarepainless · 04/06/2023 21:29

Other people's barbeques are great t. I can't be arsed myself.

1984Winston · 04/06/2023 21:29

Yeah they are totally overrated in my opinion and I'm scared the whole time that someone will get burnt
