To paint my living room… magnolia 🥸

Painter comes Monday and i need to decide the colour for my largish, long and and fairly dark living room. Keeping it light and currently is antique cream (Crown) which i‘ve quite liked. Have used nutmeg white (Dulux) through a lot of the house and am considering that for the living room. Then magnolia just came to mind - are there any lovers of magnolia?

basically looking for a light colour - suggestions welcome - i do like a touch of stone or very light touch of mink

My rooms are magnolia! I said to my dh today seeing a living room in F&B railings, I'd probably always prefer magnolia.

Chispazo · 03/06/2023 22:53

I was thinking earlier of a paler version of toasted almond for the sitting room. I think strong creams are in. I know nothing though!! Just a hunch.

angelikacpickles · 03/06/2023 22:58

Don't do it!

Dixiechickonhols · 03/06/2023 23:00

Not a fan. Mines Dulux Egyptian Cotton which is a very neutral griege.

My e tire house is magnolia after renting it out. To be honest, I love the low maintenance. Stain on the wall? Slap on more magnolia. It's very calm

GloomySkies · 03/06/2023 23:01

That you, Ann Maurice House Doctor? Or is 1996 calling? I suppose the clothed trends from the 90s are back.

Solobear · 03/06/2023 23:04

My whole house is magnolia I hate it 😒 BUT it's what you like 👍

Wynston · 03/06/2023 23:05

i like magnolia its easy......not as sterile as white not drab like grey and not as much as yellow.....paint it whatever colour makes your heart happy .

DiscoBeat · 03/06/2023 23:09

We have to have light colours due to old lowish beams, which darken the room. We've got Crown Timeless all over the place. So easy to touch up, too!

SunnieShine · 03/06/2023 23:11

It's a perfectly good colour, it just gets a bad press. I bet if you switched the label and called it something poncy like "Muted Calico" the detractors would be falling over themselves to slap it on their walls.

KEG973 · 03/06/2023 23:13

I think the colour your looking for is called cornforth white by farrow and ball it’s an amazing mix of what your after

CreativeQuestion · 03/06/2023 23:16

Agree with pp that it gets a bad press. Works well in older houses and darker or north facing space.

CheesePls · 03/06/2023 23:17

No, not magnolia. Anything but.

PuttingDownRoots · 03/06/2023 23:17

The thought of magnolia walls makes me a bit panicky... 10 years of Army married quarters!!

Merrz · 03/06/2023 23:17

My whole house is magnolia with white ceilings, I think it's great! It goes with anything, feels fresh/clean and bright but also feels warmer than white/grey when the weather's rubbish

HecticHedgehog · 03/06/2023 23:46

We have jasmine white

stbrandonsboat · 04/06/2023 00:41

Go for cream instead.

Zimzimmaa · 04/06/2023 06:51

What about an off white? Crown Sail White is nice.

Hairbrushhandle · 04/06/2023 06:54

We have jasmine white in my kitchen. It's probably magnolia. I can't be doing with paint trends though, you try and keep up with them and you end up with a dated house by the time you wash out the paint brush. Just do what you want and works with the house.

🤣🤣🤣

I agree. People are trend followers

Dulux Chalky Downs 5, you can get numbers 1-6 to see the tones. It’s a lovely stoney cream with no undertones of pink. It does not look ANYTHING like the pics on the website!

Also little Greene 33 Linen Wash is bright without being white.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 04/06/2023 07:04

Magnolia should be banned! So many more nicer neutral/off white shades out there! Duluth timeless is a good alternative, or F&B skimming stone (get the dupe made up for cheapness!) is a stronger neutral

Tadah2 · 04/06/2023 07:05

My recently purchased house was in magnolia, it made me feel I was in a nursing home. Every room is getting changed.

Teabab · 04/06/2023 07:06

After many years in military housing I'm not a fan, I do agree the colour is fine though and if it had a different name it'd probably be popular! Can your decorator do the fancy thing where they take a photo and then try different colours so you can sort of see what different ones will look like?

Curseofthenation · 04/06/2023 07:07

After a quick Google, I would say Jasmine White is a fresher/more modern shade of magnolia than nutmeg white.

I like interior design trends though - our house is painted white throughout with lots of plants, paintings and rugs to warm it up. I think it also depends if you plan to sell the house with whatever colour you choose on the walls. If you do, I might consider that too but I appreciate lots of people wouldn't care.
