To paint my living room… magnolia 🥸

Painter comes Monday and i need to decide the colour for my largish, long and and fairly dark living room. Keeping it light and currently is antique cream (Crown) which i‘ve quite liked. Have used nutmeg white (Dulux) through a lot of the house and am considering that for the living room. Then magnolia just came to mind - are there any lovers of magnolia?

basically looking for a light colour - suggestions welcome - i do like a touch of stone or very light touch of mink

White is much nicer than magnolia.

Christmascracker0 · 04/06/2023 10:21

Timeless from Dulux is really nice, although maybe too close to white for you?

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 04/06/2023 10:25

I recently tried about 8 off white/cream testers on my bathroom wall. All looked magnolia but with pretty names so I went with magnolia!
It looks clean and fresh.

People moaning about magnolia then paint their whole house in a shade of grey complete with grey kitchen because some influencers said it was on trend

Completely agree! Our bathroom was grey when we moved in, it was so depressing!

RicherThanYews · 04/06/2023 10:30

Tbh I'm a big fan of magnolia after living in sterile white for about 6 years. It also helps balance the natural darkness of my house. I can't do with bright or obnoxious colours ... or feature walls.

RoseBucket · 04/06/2023 10:33

It comes under the BMW design script for landlords but it’s your house you have what you want.

Some might do, if their sole basis for disliking magnolia is because they perceive it be unfashionable.

Although no influencers would now be painting anything grey, that's out and neutrals are in, and ironically if you were a slave to trends you'd be more likely to pick magnolia over grey nowadays.

I would imagine those who dislike magnolia from an undertone point of view and think there are so many other nicer neutrals, probably don't like grey either.

Poppins2016 · 04/06/2023 10:59

I quite like magnolia. In a bid to avoid it (because we'd had it in the house we'd previously rented and felt we should go for a change) when we bought and redecorated our current house we chose Dulux Ivory Lace which is really just a slightly paler, slightly more cream coloured magnolia... 😁

I mean F&B Cornforth White and Skimming Stone are basically magnolia...but one fraction of a shade darker.

I have to admit I can't see very much difference at all between Cornforth White and Skimming Stone?

Skimming stone and magnolia are nothing alike. I painted a magnolia wall skimming stone and I think it transformed the room.
Pebble shore is another fab neutral. Both great in north facing rooms IMO.

As a pro-magnolia person, I actually agree with this - Cornforth White and Skimming Stone look far cooler / greyer. I actually don’t like either of them.

No criticism of @wheresmymojo ’s taste - I’m sure her house looks lovely and it’s all a matter of individual preferences. I just wanted to agree that they really aren’t the same.

Talia99 · 04/06/2023 11:27

Or even @Peppadog ’s taste - sorry, I read the quote wrong.

Tillyteacup · 04/06/2023 11:28

Dulux timeless, it’s a warm white without being too creamy yellow.

Tygertiger · 04/06/2023 11:32

Our living room was magnolia for years. We painted it Elephant’s Breath in lockdown (another clichéd and ubiquitous colour, I know!) and I can’t believe the difference. It looks so much better. I’d always go for a definite colour now.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 04/06/2023 11:35

I have Dulux Timeless, which is ivory/soft white. Not that yellowish cream colour that I don't care for, but also no hint of grey, which I cannot stand!

Have a look. It's a great colour for lightening and brightening an room.

It's ok everyone has different views and that's great.
My parents love magnolia, their whole house is deliberately painted magnolia. They also have wine red carpets through the hallway and landing, so another choice that isn't fashionable. But the house looks fab, it is all to their taste and well pulled together. Lots of colourful paintings and quirky features.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 04/06/2023 11:36

Snap @Tillyteacup I obviously didn't notice your comment, sorry!

heidihigh · 04/06/2023 11:53

I don't like magnolia because I just find it too yellow-y for my preference but I really don't understand the snobbery around it... not a massive fan of grey either. We've just used Dulux Gentle Fawn and Dulux Egyptian Cotton both of which are lovely Smile

Theeora · 04/06/2023 11:53

A lot of my friends have used Egyptian Cotton. Found it too dark when I swatches it.

Not meaning to hijack, but does anyone know a shade similar to the one in the pic?

I almost went with a light apple white for my front reception room but went with cream. Apple white is nice though.

Anjelika · 04/06/2023 13:38

I'm a big fan of a neutral cream. Have Timeless in the ensuite which looks great but the same colour in the main bathroom looks awful.

Did a lounge, hall, stairs and landing in Ivory Lace but, having done kitchen diner in Natural Calico this is now my favourite cream. Need to redo hall, stairs and landing and will be slapping a coat of Natural Calico on rather than Ivory Lace.

All Dulux colours and I tried A LOT of tester pots each time.

nachotemple · 04/06/2023 13:39

just do it warm white. NOT magnolia.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/06/2023 13:40

Our hose had been completely painted in egg shell magnolia when we moved in - DD2 christened is 'depression yellow' - we actually celebrated when we covered up the last bit! So not a fan - but it's not my house.

ssd · 04/06/2023 13:47

The 70s are gone op, they took magnolia with them..

squidgybits · 04/06/2023 13:54

SunnieShine · 03/06/2023 23:11

It's a perfectly good colour, it just gets a bad press. I bet if you switched the label and called it something poncy like "Muted Calico" the detractors would be falling over themselves to slap it on their walls.

This! A relative gave me two huge tubs of magnolia paint, I used it and when she visited asked what colour it was, I told her and she said, " Oh, if I had known it was like that I would have kept it" 😂
