To paint my living room… magnolia 🥸

Painter comes Monday and i need to decide the colour for my largish, long and and fairly dark living room. Keeping it light and currently is antique cream (Crown) which i‘ve quite liked. Have used nutmeg white (Dulux) through a lot of the house and am considering that for the living room. Then magnolia just came to mind - are there any lovers of magnolia?

basically looking for a light colour - suggestions welcome - i do like a touch of stone or very light touch of mink

My whole house is magnolia with white ceilings, I think it's great! It goes with anything, feels fresh/clean and bright but also feels warmer than white/grey when the weather's rubbish

Haha mine too, it's really made it so much lighter. It's easy to change the colour theme of the room if I want to as well.

Damnloginpopup · 04/06/2023 08:10

Do it. Call it butterscotch.

Perfect28 · 04/06/2023 08:12

Embrace colour!

User1328745 · 04/06/2023 08:12

All of our skirting boards, wood panelling and doors are magnolia, I don't like white

Kpo58 · 04/06/2023 08:14

Magnolia is different depending on the brand. Dulux trade magnolia is yellowish, but Dulux magnolia was more pinkish in relation to the trade version.

It's a perfectly good colour, it just gets a bad press. I bet if you switched the label and called it something poncy like "Muted Calico" the detractors would be falling over themselves to slap it on their walls.

My thoughts too.

magnolia is just one of the myriad of off white/ cream colours that are all very similar.

TeenDivided · 04/06/2023 08:20

Magnolia gets a bad press because 30 years ago it was the colour of choice in new builds.

It's a lot nicer than the awful greys that seem to be in fashion.

Peonyfun · 04/06/2023 08:20

I doubt calling magnolia something else would change the views, everyone recognises magnolia.

there are so many beautiful colours and shades, magnolia would be the last one I’d go for, it lacks imagination, and isn’t very nice, it’s very dated looking, however, if you personally like it then do it.

Clarinet1 · 04/06/2023 08:21

I think any kind of neutral tone makes a good base if you are planning to add interest with pictures, cushions, curtains etc. Alternatively, feature walls seem to be making a comeback - how about one wall papered or in a colour picked out from, say, your sofa?

borntobequiet · 04/06/2023 08:25

It’s a colour name that exists for people to get snobbish about. As pp have said, there are a myriad of pleasant off-whites to choose from, but if you do choose one called magnolia, just say you can’t remember the name when people say they like the colour (which they will, because it’s perfectly pleasant).

cuckyplunt · 04/06/2023 08:28

We have Egyptian Cotton throughout with coloured feature walls. It’s warmer than Magnolia

DarkPatrol · 04/06/2023 08:32

My entire house is magnolia and it's a lovely neutral color that brightens the room but allows other colorful things to shine. Leyland Trade contract matt emulsion is really good, great coverage and priced well

rosiebl · 04/06/2023 08:34

Painted my lounge in crown antique cream literally 2 days ago and I love it. Save yourself the effort OP, leave it as is!

CaroleSinger · 04/06/2023 08:37

I've always gone for magnolia. I like bright rooms and white is a tad too much so magnolia just tones it down enough. I don't like solid colours in rooms because they make the room feel too closed in and dull.

Spendonsend · 04/06/2023 08:38

Apparently more dulux natural calico is bought than magnolia. Its a similar vibe but you dont have to say magnolia.

User1328745 · 04/06/2023 08:39

Our wood in the house has always been magnolia but magnolia comes in many different shades, in our house where different rooms have been painted at different times you can see this

Tessisme · 04/06/2023 08:40

I go into hiding every time we're having a room painted because I HATE choosing colours. Or rather I hate choosing from the endless samples of cream and off white. DP is very attuned to the different shades, but unless a shade is on the 'extreme' end, ie a cream veering towards caramel or a white so bright it would cut the eyes out of you, I simply can't tell the bloody difference. We just painted our hall, stairs and landing and, although I could see the difference between our old cream and our new poncy-named off white when it was getting slapped on the walls, now that it's all done it looks the bloody same🤣 To me magnolia is cream.

Hardbackwriter · 04/06/2023 08:42

Most of our house is painted in dulux natural calico, which I think is magnolia they just don't call it that! I would definitely go for a warmer off-white not a cool one - the latter tends to shade towards pale grey and grey is already looking so dated that I certainly wouldn't be painting new grey now.

Keiki · 04/06/2023 08:42

I've just dulux natural wicker in my living room, which is about as magnolia as you can get without being magnolia.

pollykitty · 04/06/2023 08:45

Ug. Nothing wrong with light color but magnolia is the pits.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 04/06/2023 08:51

I think nutmeg white is the exact colour I want! Thank you, OP.

Bedtimemode · 04/06/2023 08:52

I like it. It's light and airy and a bit warm at the same time. Our house is mostly dulux timeless, it's lighter than magnolia but also very easy and goes with everything

PuttingDownRoots · 03/06/2023 23:17

The thought of magnolia walls makes me a bit panicky... 10 years of Army married quarters!!

Me too! Seriously, don't do it. It makes everything seem dull and dirty.

Roselilly36 · 04/06/2023 08:56

I detest Magnolia, it’s dingy, sucks light out of the room. Not a shade I would chose given a choice.

We have jasmine white

Same here.
What I like with JW is it rends to ‘pick up’ other colours in my decor so it looks like I intentionally and skilfully matched it - when it was really just random luck!
Warm looking on dull winter days, bright and fresh on sunny summer days.
