To be pissed off with useless dog owners??

This week so far:

One dog on a beach knocked my stepdaughter over in order to grab a sausage roll out of her hand. Owner came up far, far too late, to be fair he tried to offer us money to replace the food. I did say it wasn't really about the money, the dog had knocked her over (she's nine).

One dog ran up to us in a field and pissed all over my mum's bag (it was on the floor; we had stopped walking briefly). Owner not paying attention so I called him over and told him what his dog had done and he said it wasn't his fault so I told him he should keep his bloody dog under control.

I'm not a dog owner. I neither particularly like or dislike dogs. But AIBU to think that people should train their dogs out of this sort of stuff, and if they can't, they keep them on a lead? It is NOT ok to just let your dog be a nuisance to other people.

Why do you need confirmation that you're not unreasonable?

I have three dogs, yet these incidents would piss me off too. I've had peoples dogs come and piss up the wheels of my wheelchair, and the owners laugh it off like 'ah well, just like they do with cars'... except its not as I don't tend to propel the fucking car with my bare hands on the wheels...

Theres irresponsible, thoughtless pricks in all walks of life, who let their actions or their charges impinge unacceptably on other peoples lives.

The kid whose parents let her run up to my giant breed dog and scare the shit out of her by hugging her and yelling DOGGY DOGGY in her face (she stood like a rock til I peeled the child off!)...

The parents whose teen/tween offspring are out smashing glass bottles in the park and leaving gas cannisters and broken glass everywhere.

The adults who park on the pavement and across dropped kerbs and block my route, or who spit on the pavement that I then have to roll through...

Humans are often thoughtless arseholes. Not all of them, but a minority group can still have a pretty big effect on everyone else.

The dogs are fur babies, just trying to express their friendly nature. The piss was a compliment in dog language. It's like when they thrust their noses onto your crotch and jump up on you, it's just their way of saying hello.

Hope this is sarcastic.

And it’s only Wednesday. You sure are unlucky with all these incident happening to you.

I suspect this might be you trying to say you disbelieve me. It's not something I normally experience - I did wonder if it's because we are on holiday and people are somehow more lax with these things. Or perhaps we have just been unlucky, as you say.

The OP must be incredibly unlucky to have had 2 incidents in a week. I await the posts that dogs run up to people on beaches stealing picnics over the coming weeks.

There’s at least 4 threads a week on here regarding dogs, MN is becoming like our local FB pages about unruly children playing in the street, dog shit and bins not being lifted.

tebenema · 01/06/2023 00:25

Agree that this seems very, very unlucky... I only ever seem to find out about these kinds of dog incidents on mumsnet...

Babyroobs · 01/06/2023 00:28

How do you stop a dog from pissing up things though as I have never managed it.

Applecoresweet · 01/06/2023 00:29

Peeing on the bag in the ground was probably an accident. Dogs pee in fields. Don't leave your bag lying in a field is the moral to that story. My dog is under control and does not get the opportunity to jump on people or get near their sausage rolls but he isn't Louis Vuitton and doesn't recognize bags. When he is running around a field he pees as do sheep and cows and donkeys and horses and foxes. This is why I be don't leave my bags lying in fields.

PurpleParrots · 01/06/2023 00:36

YANBU but are dogs allowed on the beach right now? They are not, usually, allowed on a popular public beach between 1st May and 1st Oct.

Dog owners usually have the task of cleaning the beaches once the holidaymakers have left (and dogs can be walked in peace).

However, I agree that out of control dogs are a bloody nuisance to parents, children and other dog owners.

Roll on October when dogs and their owners can have their beach back. Bring it on! 👍

If you’d actually read the thread, you’d see it’s aimed at poor owners rather than the dogs.
But that’d be far too much effort, obviously!

As I said, it ran up to us and pissed on my mum's bag. Her bag was literally by our feet, not just left randomly lying around in a field.

Of course I don't think all owners are like this. Not at all. But I do think that if you have a pet dog, you should keep it under enough control that it isn't doing stuff like this.

Maybe this rule didn't apply because it wasn't a popular public beach, it was fairly remote, we had a decent walk to get there. I'm not sure. Yeah it was a nuisance... I get it, dogs come and sniff round people. So far, so normal. But knocking a child over to steal food? No. Wonder what it's like at home tbh.

It does seem like you have had the most awful bad luck. A dog stealing for from a person? Dogs are pack animals, they know their place when it comes to eating and don’t normally grab food from humans.

bussteward · 01/06/2023 05:49

YANBU, OP. But this will go the way of all threads once the weird hound-lovers get wind of it. I see a few are already here with their “my dog would never do this, therefore it doesn’t happen” schtick. Side scuffles will break out. Some deleted posts. One intractable mutt fan with no job or life will post persistently in praise of dogs until the thread is full.

Meanwhile there’s poo everywhere, people keep bringing dogs into our local playground, and treat the “dogs must be on a lead” sign in the park as invisible. One of the hairy fuckers came jumping up at me the other day when I had the baby in the sling – its dopey owner calling after it vaguely and ineffectually. I wish the fines were enforced.

Bollocks. Dogs are forever coming over to picnics or walkers stopping for lunch and snaffling! It’s literally what they do.
