To be pissed off with useless dog owners??

Sapphire387 · 31/05/2023 23:23

This week so far:

One dog on a beach knocked my stepdaughter over in order to grab a sausage roll out of her hand. Owner came up far, far too late, to be fair he tried to offer us money to replace the food. I did say it wasn't really about the money, the dog had knocked her over (she's nine).

One dog ran up to us in a field and pissed all over my mum's bag (it was on the floor; we had stopped walking briefly). Owner not paying attention so I called him over and told him what his dog had done and he said it wasn't his fault so I told him he should keep his bloody dog under control.

I'm not a dog owner. I neither particularly like or dislike dogs. But AIBU to think that people should train their dogs out of this sort of stuff, and if they can't, they keep them on a lead? It is NOT ok to just let your dog be a nuisance to other people.

Maybe this rule didn't apply because it wasn't a popular public beach, it was fairly remote, we had a decent walk to get there. I'm not sure. Yeah it was a nuisance... I get it, dogs come and sniff round people. So far, so normal. But knocking a child over to steal food? No. Wonder what it's like at home tbh.

Some beaches have "dog parts" in certain months.

Bollocks. Dogs are forever coming over to picnics or walkers stopping for lunch and snaffling! It’s literally what they do.

Begging and looking mournful for sure, but grabbing out of a human beings hands, no I can’t see it. This is quite clearly the average dog hater thread.

ChubbyMorticia · 01/06/2023 05:54

I have two dogs and this behaviour would tick me off. Especially the food snatching. My dogs know better than to even sidle up to an unattended snack of the coffee table, for crying out loud.

NapoleonDidSurrender · 01/06/2023 05:55

There’s no point in these threads. The good dog owners get silenced. The crap dog owners don’t believe these incidents happen.

I can’t be bothered to list the incidents that have happened to me here. They are infrequent but once is too many times to have your picnic ruined by a marauding mutt or your kid bitten by an out of control dog.

‘He is just being friendly’ will be mentioned too.

There will even be bizarre suggestions that you are jealous that their dog gets more attention than your child.

Just accept that a minority/majority of owners think that everyone loves their doggies as much as they do. Because they get stopped by other dog owners who admire their hounds.

And there will be a zillion comments of how children are worse than dogs.

There will be lectures on teaching you not to be scared of dogs. No concept that we aren’t all scared but some of us don’t want dog saliva on our clothes and property.

Selfish idiots are everywhere. Dog owners are not exempt. There are decent owners though. Focus on them.

YouJustDoYou · 01/06/2023 05:55

I used to own a dog, I couldn't stand other dog owners sometimes when they were so fecking useless, I haven't got another dog since mine passed away, it's just too much to deal with in regards to other people being unable to control their animal. Was at the park with my kids yesterday and heard a snarling yelping noise behind us, this big Lab had attacked another dog that was being lead-walked past and had locked it's jaws around the other dog's neck, the owner was pathetically saying "No Rog, no!" and was trying to pulled her dog off the other one (no lead), the older gent of the poor dog that got attacked didn't even get an apology, she just dragged her dog back to her table. It kept lunging at any other dog that was walking by, and when the dad came back the woman's kids chimed up "Rog attacked another dog again dad!". It wouldn't obey any orders from the woman, she was only there to keep a hold of its collar. Irresponsible, useless woman.

Thisbastardcomputer · 01/06/2023 05:55

My friend told me, one of my three dogs had pissed up the wheels of her car, not possible they are girls, she was very unconvinced.

Jantlet · 01/06/2023 05:58

I agree OP.

Just wanted a quiet walk after work yesterday and had to shout to an owner who’d walked well ahead of his off lead dog. (Yeah, I know, that old trick so they don’t notice the dog pooing). The dog had turned its attention to me and stood blocking my way. I’m sure it was “just being friendly”, “ wanted to say hello”, “is a big softie”, “wouldn’t hurt a fly”, and I am partaking in “another MN dog haters thread”, nevertheless the owner should abide by the law and keep it under control.

The animal completely ignored the owners shouts so he had to traipse back to pull it away.

What is wrong with these people.

They seem to have no basic common sense, let alone an understanding of their responsibilities.

rebbles1 · 01/06/2023 06:00

Amazed at all the dog owners that can't believe these incidents happen, when it happens all the time. We have had a dog piss on my son's beach towel and also a dog steal his McDonald's out of his hand whilst we were sat on a field. Also had a dog lick my leg three times whilst waiting in a queue for a NT cafe just this Monday. Absolutely disgusting and the owner didn't even notice.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/06/2023 06:02

Babyroobs · 01/06/2023 00:28

How do you stop a dog from pissing up things though as I have never managed it.

Are you being obtuse? You don’t stop the pissing. You stop the running up to people, the zero recall, the off lead “he’s just friendly” nonsense.

GreenwichOrTwicks · 01/06/2023 06:07

bussteward · 01/06/2023 05:49

YANBU, OP. But this will go the way of all threads once the weird hound-lovers get wind of it. I see a few are already here with their “my dog would never do this, therefore it doesn’t happen” schtick. Side scuffles will break out. Some deleted posts. One intractable mutt fan with no job or life will post persistently in praise of dogs until the thread is full.

Meanwhile there’s poo everywhere, people keep bringing dogs into our local playground, and treat the “dogs must be on a lead” sign in the park as invisible. One of the hairy fuckers came jumping up at me the other day when I had the baby in the sling – its dopey owner calling after it vaguely and ineffectually. I wish the fines were enforced.

Completely agree.
A lot of this where I live and yes a (former) friend's dog did run up to a table in the cafe in our local Street (pedestrian, tables outside) and take food from it.She feeds it all the time from her table so not surprising. Final straw was when it ran into a no dogs allowed playground and was pestering for food. Would not come it when she called (she can't run so took a while for her to get there to it) and she blames people for leaving the gate open, not her own complete lack of control of the dog.

Female dogs can cock their legs and piss up things too.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 01/06/2023 06:17

YANBU OP.

I'm a dog walker and live by the sea - this week has been utter hell at work as there are so many out of control dogs around.

My own on-lead dog almost got bitten yesterday by an out of control bully breed whose owner couldn't hold it back and stop it from lunging about 8ft towards us.

Lots of dogs about with no recall running up to other dogs or people - it's a right PITA and makes my job about 10x harder than normal!

LuvSmallDogs · 01/06/2023 06:20

The dog that knocked over your DD to nick her food was bad, it must have been scary and she could've been hurt in different circumstances (if she'd landed badly on a hard surface).

The bag pissing, well, if something is on the ground and sticking up slightly then yes male dogs in particular might see it as fair game to piss on.

YesItsMe44 · 01/06/2023 06:32

For all you that claim it's haters who claim these things, it's not. I love dogs, but they aren't perfect. Mine is gone but she was a very happy dog, loved anyone, and could be catagorized as an over exuberant greeter at times. I loved that she was loyal, sweet, wasn't a barker, and didn't lick. I always kept her on leash unless at a fenced dog park. Despite a lot of training (she failed Basics 101 and was asked to retake it), name recall wasn't her best skill. We used to say she had ADHD. And, yes, many dogs do eat whatever looks good when they can get away with it. Have you not ever been at a holiday meal and left the kitchen unintended by mistake? The list goes on for those clever thiefs.

faffadoodledo · 01/06/2023 06:41

dog owner here. It would annoy me if a dog cocked its leg on something of mine. I'm particularly careful on beaches. Piles of clothes left mid beach while the owner swims always look particularly vulnerable so I call my dog close to me. I'd be mortified if he did that!

In fact the other day a small dog wee'ed on my dry bag at the beach while i was sitting next to it. i could easily have taken it down to the water's edge to rinse it off but i made the owner do it! She had zero control over the dog. I'd watched her helplessly calling him across the beach. Call with authority, or get a whistle, and get the dog to respond to it!

A well trained dog shoudl be able to be off lead at the beach without stealing other peoples' food. Sadly few are sufficiently trained. And i totally blame the owners.

My first dog had poor recall - totally our fault. it meant his freedom was restricted because we had to have him on the lead in places like beaches when there are lots of picnics about. I was determined our current dog would have freedom earned from robust training. It really is the best for everyone and the dog.

NapoleonDidSurrender · 01/06/2023 06:43

I attended a meeting in a work setting last month. The support dog bounded up to me and stood up with its paws on me.
i then moved and sat down and it again put its paws on my lap. It tried to put its face in my bag. I don’t know why the bosses didn’t stop it. I was calm throughout.

As an aside it twice did that whole body shrug thing. That does not bother me. But I seen posters on here saying that dogs don’t ever do that other than in specific circumstances.

I don’t know why some dog owners deny everything. They would be better off saying, yep dogs do that stuff but I don’t care. Denying it is embarrassing.

Willmafrockfit · 01/06/2023 06:53

a dog weed on my back when i was sitting in the rec. i dont remember what the owner did, i think we laughed

a dog stole my cake, when watching the rugby - the owner bought me another

We haven't had one for a few weeks.... 🍿

Domestic dogs are mostly kept as pets, though many breeds are capable of surviving on their own, whether it’s in a forest or on city streets. A third of all households worldwide have a dog, according to a 2016 consumer insights study. This makes the domestic dog the most popular pet on the planet.

however a dog stole dm sandwich, the owner just didnt care

so yes some owners/people are Rubbish

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 01/06/2023 06:57

Ah, yet another of these threats. They never get old 🙄.

yes, out of control dogs are annoying, yes people should train their dogs or keep them on a lead. No, you have no control over what people do with their dogs. There we go.

um, yes people have dogs as pets. How is this relevant?

And it’s only Wednesday. You sure are unlucky with all these incident happening to you.

I've just spent 4 days in a seaside town and seen and experienced multiple entitled dog owners, can definitely believe OP.

Really quite irritated by the number of pubs and restaurants heaving with dogs

NotMyMill · 01/06/2023 07:41

NapoleonDidSurrender · 01/06/2023 05:48

Why do shit dog owners never believe these incidents happen?

They do, I believe it’s just a way of gaslighting or deflecting.

OP, this is all unacceptable and it happens more and more recently. I’ve only had a handful of picnics in recent years -around 5- but two of those few times it was disrupted by an off leash dog. It kind of puts me off tbh I just don’t want your dogs nose in my crisps. And yes it only happened twice but considering I rarely have picnics or eat in the park nowadays - 2 out of 5 times is a lot! It kind of puts me off. I avoid the local park for this reason too but thankfully there is a gym nearby I go to regularly although I know it’s not the same as walking outside in terms of health benefits.

Divebar2021 · 01/06/2023 07:41

My office had an impromptu visit by a police dog and we were told by the handler to remove some cakes knocking around because he’d have them, so yes I can believe as child was knocked over for a sausage roll.

faffadoodledo · 01/06/2023 07:48

Well yes, it's sensible to remove cakes from a dog's nose level. He'd probably have been fine. But sensible, yes?
