To think it's very wrong to put the water in the cup first and then add the bag

...when making a cup of tea.

Am I being unreasonable?

Trivial, I know, but wondered if there was a consensus, and maybe I'm on the wrong side of it.

There is a consensus, and you're on the right side of it. Water first is immoral.

DogsvsCats · 23/05/2023 09:51

Who did that? Stay away. Psychopath.

AbreathofFrenchair · 23/05/2023 09:53

You are absolutely not being unreasonable. I thought my coworker made tea incorrectly but this has topped it!

She puts water in a cup, microwaves it till hot adds milk and teabags and microwaves again 🤮

gogohmm · 23/05/2023 09:56

Yes, very very wrong. I had an argument onboard the Queen Mary 2 as they insisted on bringing a pot of not hot enough water and a bag - the maitre d' insisted that they were doing it the proper way! (I complained to head office, you can't accept such things!)

feralunderclass · 23/05/2023 09:57

It's very wrong to put the bag in the cup, use a teapot!

Pinesinthedunes · 23/05/2023 09:57

I'm relieved people agree - I was so shocked when I encountered this method of tea-making!

Heinous.

Though my husband would say you are being unreasonable using tea bags.

BillieShears · 23/05/2023 09:58

I do hope you've logged it with 101.

Oh my god, I hope your colleague never makes tea for anyone else 🤮

My MiL pre-lactates by putting tea bag into cold milk then adding boiling water, which I thought was bad enough, but that's ten times worse!

zingally · 23/05/2023 10:02

I very recently watched someone put water, milk and sugar in a cup, and THEN add the teabag! I mean, each to their own, but it looked bonkers.

I had been contemplating a trip on QM2. This would be a deal breaker for me.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/05/2023 10:04

That is NOT a 'method of tea making'! It's a way to get vaguely warm brown water!

Gettingbysomehow · 23/05/2023 10:04

Of course you put the water in first.

Oysterbabe · 23/05/2023 10:06

I've checked and it's classed as treason, punishable by beheading.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/05/2023 10:10

YANBU OP, what sort of sick person does something like that?Shock

My grandmother would put a teabag in a cup of cold water then microwave the whole thing. It was horrendous. Only topped by the powdered milk she used instead of the real stuff 🤢🤢🤢

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 23/05/2023 10:16

you are on the right side of history with this one I don't even associate with water first people, its a bad sign

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 23/05/2023 10:16

Disgusting. Do not engage with this animal

Bags are wrong. loose tea or nothing!

Tourmalines · 23/05/2023 12:01

Tea bag definitely first. Actually I put the boiling water in first to warm the cup , empty it out , teabag in warm cup , then water . Your friend is crazy .

Ifailed · 23/05/2023 12:04

You are all wrong! Tea (and if you must use bags then they are included) should go into a teapot that has been warmed by swilling some hot water around and then tipped out. Then add boiling water to teapot, put on lid and leave to brew for at least 5 minutes.
Then pour into teacups (or mugs if for manual workers to use). As to whether milk should be added first or after the tea, I'll leave for another day.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/05/2023 10:04

Why would it be vaguely warm? Surely having the bag in first doesn't keep the water hot, if it's boiling it's boiling.

BlueRabbitYellow · 23/05/2023 12:11

It is only not wrong in the case of Teapigs. They are required to be gently lowered into the water then given a little wiggle. This persuades the tea leaves to open, relax and release their flavour. Surely everyone knows this?

TakeMe2Insanity · 23/05/2023 12:13

People have lost the ability to make tea properly.
YANBU.

ShinyPikachu · 23/05/2023 12:17

I was a waitress in a cafe on Saturdays when I was still in high school and I still remember the customer who asked for a pot of tea but requested I put the hot water in the pot first and then quickly dipped the tea bag into it ONCE (then the jug of milk on the side as usual). I did exactly as she requested and she declared it perfect (apparently one of the others left the tea bag in about 2 seconds too long) but her cup once it was poured just looked like watery hot milk to me.
