To think it's very wrong to put the water in the cup first and then add the bag

...when making a cup of tea.

Am I being unreasonable?

Trivial, I know, but wondered if there was a consensus, and maybe I'm on the wrong side of it.

If you are serious about your tea, you need one of these.

It boils the water to the temperature you choose and then lowers the leaf tea into the freshly boiled water for the length of time you specify, with the option to dunk the tea leaves in and out of the water during brewing time or leaving them in the water for the whole brew time.

It then removes the basket with the tea leaves from the tea so it doesn’t stew and can keep the tea warm for an hour.

I was a waitress in a cafe on Saturdays when I was still in high school and I still remember the customer who asked for a pot of tea but requested I put the hot water in the pot first and then quickly dipped the tea bag into it ONCE (then the jug of milk on the side as usual). I did exactly as she requested and she declared it perfect (apparently one of the others left the tea bag in about 2 seconds too long) but her cup once it was poured just looked like watery hot milk to me.

Sounds like me Grin
I always ask for the tea bag to be left out if having tea out. Otherwise the server bungs it in and by the time they get round to passing the pot/mug over to me it is too well stewed.

FraserNow · 23/05/2023 13:19

That’s all kinds of wrong.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/05/2023 13:21

Making it in the mug is every shade of wrong to start with.

but in extremis, when forced to make mug tea, of course it’s bag in first.

Be wary of the water first monster. It’s surely the first sign of a psychopath.

Yes

My grandmother would put a teabag in a cup of cold water then microwave the whole thing. It was horrendous. Only topped by the powdered milk she used instead of the real stuff 🤢🤢🤢

This is the worst thing I have ever read in all my years on Mumsnet and needs a Trigger Warning.

It's very wrong to put the bag in the cup, use a teapot!

Yes! I opened this thread to post this! We teapot users are a dying breed, though. Sad

I always use a teapot and Miles' loose leaf tea, which suits our hard water very well. I buy it in 1kg bags - I drink rather a lot of tea. 😁

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/05/2023 15:21

My daughter's housemate has knitted a beautiful tea cosy for their pot. If I could knit, I'd do the same. As it is, we manage with a bought one.

GalileoHumpkins · 23/05/2023 12:06

Why would it be vaguely warm? Surely having the bag in first doesn't keep the water hot, if it's boiling it's boiling.

It's never boiling when you get it. It always just about warm. They insist on doing this everywhere in Europe, which is odd because usually the coffee is good, but they can never manage a good cup of tea.

Who is 'they'? I've never had a warm cup of tea anywhere, it's always hot.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/05/2023 15:55

Good for you.

I've had the tepid water and with a tea bag on the side everywhere. Cafes, restaurants, hotels, friends' places.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/05/2023 15:59

And it's not a cup of tea. It's a cup of water accompanied by a tea bag.

Wilkolampshade · 23/05/2023 16:06

LTB. Red flags all over this.

ChopperC110P · 23/05/2023 16:11

Depends on the type of tea. Certain teas do get scorched if you put them in first and pour boiling water over them.

flowngo · 23/05/2023 17:07

Had a man from Quooker out today to look at our tap and he used to work for Twinings and said this was the way to do it, then demonstrated!

SorryForTheRant · 23/05/2023 17:11

YANBU. This is serial killer behaviour

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/05/2023 17:15

In America I’ve more than once been given a pot of hot water, with a teabag on the side.
I no longer bother ordering tea across the pond.

ScottBakula · 23/05/2023 17:28

>>>Put tin hat on <<<<

I think tea is horrible, I haven't drank it since I was a child BUT even I know that some of the above methods* *mentioned are the work of the devil .

flowngo · 23/05/2023 19:23

Make 2 cups and see the scum on the top! Mind this might be because of the quooker

BitOutOfPractice · 23/05/2023 19:46

Yes, tea made in the cup is scummy. You can see it inside the cup when you’ve drunk it. Scummy. I hate it. If it’s going to be tea made in the mug, I’ll have coffee thanks.

I used to covet one of these but decided that the risk of it becoming an expensive dust gatherer and worktop space stealer was too high. I'm also very attached to the part our stove top whistling kettle has in the whole teamaking process and didn't want to give that up!

Redebs · 24/05/2023 13:14

If you warm the cup, put the bag in and then put absolutely boiling water in, you get the best cuppa, because the bag sinks slowly and doesn't contain a big bubble of air, making it float.
