Wtf. I guess peak capitalism has been achieved. Well done capitalists. Nauseating.

OP posts:
MyrrAgain · 19/05/2023 23:46

Of course he does

AllIeveknewonlyou · 19/05/2023 23:51

That does come across as being slightly 'yes yes move along poor people, all is fine'! Us rich say so!

Welfare state was supposed to be about redistribution of wealth, not only a safety net.

I don't know about that but I've never resented someone for being rich, they are still a person. I can't say I even think about it. Resentment eats away at people and is pointless. If people are rich they will still encounter problems in their lives and eventually die like everyone else.

ReignOfError · 19/05/2023 23:54

I’ve never resented anyone for being rich - my closest friend is a multi-millionaire. But I don’t for one moment believe they understand what life is like for the the rest of us, and particularly for the poorest. And in Sunak’s case, I don’t believe he even cares.

This.
I haven't 'moved past' it, as I never resented it in the first place.

Fererr · 20/05/2023 00:54

I resent the increase in inequality and a system which produces such statistics:

Total wealth of UK billionaires

▪️2012: £212 Billion
▪️2022: £653 Billion

DifficultBloodyWoman · 20/05/2023 01:00

🤣🤣🤣

Nope. There are too many people with the attitude of ‘if I can’t have, then no one can’.

WateryDoom · 20/05/2023 01:02

I think he's deluding himself if he genuinely thinks that those of us struggling with the rising cost of living and wondering how we'll pay for the basics don't resent the fact that rich arseholes like him and his cronies are sailing along happily, not giving a shit about the poor.

But then, he's never lived in the real world, has he? A life of privilege and wealth means you have no fucking idea how other people live or feel.

PocketBattleship · 20/05/2023 01:10

There have been rich people since shortly after money was invented. We should probably be used to it by now.

Swansandcustard · 20/05/2023 01:24

He has it wrong. It’s not resentment of the rich. It’s the resentment of the rich who are rich through circumstance, ability to evade expenses they should morally incur and insistence ‘there’s no magic money tree’ when they themselves have several such orchards, and proclaim to be ‘doing their bit’, ‘working hard’ and ‘already paying loads in tax’

how many homes can you live in at once
how many cars can you drive at the same time
can you not do the maths of this
do you not recognise when plenty has crossed over to excess

wildinthecountry · 20/05/2023 02:59

I don't think Sunak grasps that we resent the very rich hiring rich Lawyers to help them avoid paying their share of tax .

Haywirecity · 20/05/2023 03:01

Apparently not on Mumsnet.

VashtaNerada · 20/05/2023 03:16

I don’t resent people who are rich. I resent people who are rich and actively work to make lives harder for the poor by depriving public services and the welfare system of funds. Hth Rishi 🙄

DeeCeeCherry · 20/05/2023 03:35

True in a way. Rich and poor voting for the same political party. Tories are stinking rich and it appears some kind of inner-serfdom gene compels the people that Tories cause to suffer the most, to vote them in again and again. Whilst resenting other working class people like themselves. Its on MN regularly isn't it? Prying into people's financial affairs wondering how somebody's afforded a car or a house or whether they're living on credit etc.

echt · 20/05/2023 03:45

Sunak says we have 'moved past' resenting people for being rich

In the words of Mandy Rice-Davies "Well he would, wouldn't he?"

Haywirecity · 20/05/2023 03:50

some kind of inner-serfdom gene

MN is obsessed with serfs. 😅

That's not true at all. What some people resent is rich people, getting richer at the expense of poor / middle income people.

Flufferblub · 20/05/2023 04:03

He's richer than the King.

Lemieux3 · 20/05/2023 04:04

The Tories have done a great job of convincing the UK public that disabled people are benefit scroungers so people keep voting them in.

Even though most of us need to use public services like state schools and the NHS. It's utter madness.

Endlesssummer2022 · 20/05/2023 04:05

I think resenting people just for being rich is quite sad. I’d understand it if it’s because they became rich through nefarious means or they treat poorer people badly. But just because they have more is a negative mindset to have.

Also many people in the UK who resent the rich just for being rich don’t realise they themselves are rich compared to the majority of the world. I’m sure they’d feel uncomfortable if they thought the majority of the world resented them for being rich.

That said, Sunak is clueless and as PM he’s in a position to make choices which help poorer people but makes active choices not to. He tries to get them to blame even poorer people coming in on dinghies for all of their woes. He supported Brexit which will make them poorer still. He’s despicable and I haven’t forgotten him sniggering about not knowing any working class people.

Exactly- she hit the nail on the head there!

Clearly doesn’t spend much time on Mumsnet.

That is all so very true, Endless.

We certainly are all a lot better off than those in many other countries, however people experiencing hardship can only deal with their own situation at the time and it is terribly stressful.

I was extremely hard up for many years when younger and appreciate being comfortable now, it means I don't have to worry and can give a discreet helping hand where needed. There will always be people who have more but so what; a lot of them are philanthropic, we aren't to know what they do for others behind the scenes or what personal struggles, unrelated to finance, they go through.

Nevertheless I do think Rishi Sunak should keep his mouth shut, he doesn't seem to have a clue about such things.
