Wtf. I guess peak capitalism has been achieved. Well done capitalists. Nauseating.

I’m in Switzerland right now but my friend in Edinburgh sent me a picture of a food package.

Didn't Switzerland get rich by providing secret banking services to any one and everyone. Eg Nazis.
And they certainly had very strict immigration rules

grayhairdontcare · 20/05/2023 08:05

I don't resent anyone's wealth.
I resent their lack of compassion and understanding towards people who are struggling and do not have enough for the the most basic level of living.

Believeitornot · 20/05/2023 08:10

It depends on how that wealth was gained IMO.

And it depends on the overall economic situation and whether some sections of society have far too much power and influence to keep themselves rich at the expense of others.

In Rishi Sunak’s case, he made his money off the back of the financial crisis. Worth reading “Short Money” which explains what the crisis was as well as “Crashed” by Adam Tooze. It’s a heavy read but so important (and you see why it was never properly understood because it’s pretty complicated).

I think that the financial services sector needs more regulation.

As for self made business types who’ve rolled up their sleeves etc, I’m less bothered.

But I don’t like our unjust and incredibly unequal society and, sadly, the rich have the ability to buy more influence than a single voter - so we are not all equal in our democracy and that stinks.

Believeitornot · 20/05/2023 08:11

There’s a reason that Rishi Sunak’s wealth and background in investment banking is a rarely spoken about unlike, say, someone like Richard Brandon….

Swrigh1234 · 20/05/2023 08:23

He’s right. But we haven’t moved past people being incompetent. People like him.

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/05/2023 08:24

I don't resent the rich, I'd quite like to join them, it would certainly make life more comfortable and enjoyable.

I think people like JK Rowley who pay their full taxes, help those less fortunate and speak out against injustice are amazing.

I think people who use loopholes together out of paying into a system designed to help the less fortunate, hoard wealth, create inequality, abuse those less fortunate by paying such crap wages they need foodbanks whilst doing stressful, physical jobs, who refuse to comply with laws they create because they don't apply to the rich as the penalties are meaningless to them, who- I could go on for hours here- ... are disgusting excuses for human beings and deserve our contempt. He and his party fall into this category.

Lemieux3 · 20/05/2023 08:58

But I still think my statement is true. There are also too many people with the attitude of ‘if I can’t have it, no one can’.

One does not preclude the other. Don’t say my statement ‘is not true at all’.

So.... where is your evidence that 'too many people' are just jealous then? Hmm

This.

This whole thread shows that people don't and didn't ever seem to resent the poor.

People celebrate those who got themselves wealthy and use it for good.

They resent those who got born into money and use that to make themselves richer and in the process keep the poor in a position they have to support making them richer.

I'm not rich. I'm not on the breadline (but have been).

I'm happy with a life where I earn enough to live and have time to enjoy my life. I hate the fact that to do this and to work a role I love I have had to have pay freezes, less than inflation pay rises and my sector had had spending cuts to the point service users are suffering.

Fererr · 20/05/2023 12:32

waltzingparrot · 20/05/2023 07:38

But there's also far more billionaires so that's misleading - it's not like for like.

So? Still shows the richest in our country have massively increased their wealth during a time when standard of living has dropped for everyone else.

Zonder · 20/05/2023 13:24

I don't resent the rich. I do resent the rich in government running the country for themselves and their rich friends, making laws and rules that serve them and punish the poor. I resent the rich leaving our country with so many people needing food banks, selling off our NHS, wrecking our waterways, ruining our education system just because none of it applies to them and they can afford alternatives.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 20/05/2023 14:52

No Rishi. That's just what you and your ilk have been hoping and pushing for every time you demonize the poor and the disabled on benefits etc.
It's the ole "divide and conquer" gambit. Hey working stiffs, look at all those "benefit scroungers" living the high life on your taxes. My arse!

I'll admit, it's working up to a point, (lots of useful idiots punching down and blaming the wrong people for their troubles) but you're not there yet.
Many of us can still see who are the real villains here.

IHateFlies · 20/05/2023 14:54

I don't resent the rich. I just resent the fact that I can't even get part way there!

IHateFlies · 20/05/2023 14:56

By that I mean there are so many barriers for us normal folk. Even when we work hard and get decent jobs, the salaries are low. Compare some of our salaries to what similar jobs would get paid in Europeans US. The difference is shocking.

Anonymouseposter · 20/05/2023 14:56

Clearly some people have not moved past resenting people for being rich. I don't think I have ever resented someone for being rich but I do feel angry with people who amass wealth by exploiting people in a less advantaged position.

Anonymouseposter · 20/05/2023 14:57

..and yes to what Zonder said.

SunnyEgg · 20/05/2023 14:59

ThankmelaterOkay · 20/05/2023 05:19

Clearly doesn’t spend much time on Mumsnet.

I’m not sure we have actually, plenty do resent and yep

megletthesecond · 20/05/2023 14:59

I don't resent people for being rich. I resent people who avoid their taxes and exploit people on the way up.

Tangled123 · 20/05/2023 15:03

I resent someone who has earned millions over a couple of years using taxpayers money to fund legal bills only incurred through breaking laws he put in place himself. Why can he not pay that himself?

I resent billionaires not paying employees a living wage or making them work in unsafe conditions when they already have more money than they can spend in a lifetime and just hoard it in offshore accounts.

I resent being told what to think by someone who has repeatedly lied to the public and doesn’t have a clue what it is like to try to earn your own way through life without having money or connections to help.

woodhill · 20/05/2023 15:03

I don't mind people being rich but do resent people being dishonest and lying and cheating to obtain their wealth such as the story last week but I can't remember exactly who it was or why

badgermushrooms · 20/05/2023 15:07

I don't resent people for "being rich". I do however resent them for accumulating resources far beyond what anyone could ever need, while other people can't feed their kids. "Being rich" is not something that happens in a vacuum, the money (as they like to tell us) doesn't grow on trees, they have to generate it somehow and in the Sunaks' case it is generated from other people's hard work.

Liebig · 20/05/2023 15:11

I resent historically unprecedented global inequality and am happily sharpening my guillotine for the revolution.

GreenwichOrTwicks · 20/05/2023 06:42

Have you never paid a tradesman in cash? Loads of hypocrisy.

Yeah and they gave me a receipt.

One had a receipt book on him and the others sent it to me via email.

One I had most recently explained he had to hassle some customers to get paid which is why he no longer accepted bank transfers.

Dazedandbemused0 · 20/05/2023 15:36

He would say that wouldn’t he. Wanker.

Eleganz · 20/05/2023 15:45

Rishi Sunak appears to be being advised by some PR people that if he repeats the same bullshit over and over again it will eventually become true. Well, I suppose that there will always be enough people in this country who are willing to believe anything coming out of a Tory prime ministers mouth.

The guy is an out of touch, arrogant prick who only looks normal because of the complete disasters that have preceded him.
