I think I’ve worked out why I always look frumpy, I never tuck shirts/blouses/t-shirts etc in … I worry Ill look fat but I’m probably making myself look fatter having all my tops untucked? lumberjack shirt in the jeans

do you tuck or not tuck?

If It’s cold then absolutely yes, and I don’t care what it looks like. Hate a drafty middle. French tuck works well if it’s mild and I want to look a bit smarter.

Top out for me. I carry most of my weight around my stomach so anything tucked in just looks hideous on me. It's also the one thing stopping me joining the Ambulance service as I just couldn't wear the uniform with the top tucked in

HauntedPencil · 30/04/2023 22:25

Why have I never heard of the French tuck!

Tucking gives a visual effect and makes you look slimmer. Your tummy is visible whether you tuck in or not. I think that you should always tuck in and use a belt as well...it is visually much more pleasing.
If you are worried of your middle aged belly, than decrease the effect with a not too short jacket. It works.
Also, all dresses should have a belt, unless you are a waif...

I could hardly disagree more! The last thing I need is to visually split my body across the line where I'm fattest. May as well wear a flashing arrow with the words NEVER MIND THE FACE, LEGS OR CHEST, LOOK AT THIS!

Even if I'm wearing a jumper with a welted waist, the welt comes a couple of inches below my (non-existent) waist, and looks more together than tucked or half-tucked.

Oh, mate, that's sad. I realise you've already thought this but, when you're saving lives, people are hardly going to judge you on your figure ...

What is a French tuck please ?

Campervangirl · 30/04/2023 22:36

I tuck and bag the bottom of the top over a bit.
Bigger, longer tops I gather the front and tie a ponytail tie on then tuck the front with the knot/ponytail tie under the front of the top rather than tuck it in, it gives the illusion of being tucked in without actually tucking the bulk into your skirt or trousers, the back I tuck under without a tie, hope that makes sense

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 30/04/2023 22:39

God no. I get "when are you due" comments

Plethoraofwoo · 30/04/2023 22:40

French tuck, but off centre rather than centre. A shapeless hang tends to make me look bigger.

updin · 30/04/2023 22:45

Now I'm wearing looser fitted jeans like mum jeans instead of skinnies, yeah, with skinnies I either didn't or French tucked.

ElBandito · 30/04/2023 22:53

No, I have a short body so if I tuck it looks even shorter.

I generally prefer a French tuck. It varies from person to person but I definitely feel frumpy if I don't tuck in a bit (unless it's something boxy in style that hits at my waistband). But a full tuck also feels frumpy on me.

Just had to Google French tuck!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 01/05/2023 08:32

@Campervangirl - I'm trying the ponytail, that might work for me, thanks

YukoandHiro · 01/05/2023 08:34

Definite French tuck! Makes all the difference especially if you've hit 40.

Catsmere · 01/05/2023 09:34

Depends on the type of top and what trousers or skirt I’m wearing.

User165342 · 01/05/2023 09:42

A French tuck may have looked ok on me even ten years ago but I'm in my mid 60s now so would probably just look like I hadn't managed to dress myself properly. At least I am the age now when I am expected to look frumpy in my nice comfy Seasalt tunics.

Smoky1107 · 01/05/2023 09:46

I tuck in and I have a belly, I just feel smarter tucked in

WingBingo · 01/05/2023 09:52

French tuck all the way!

dudsville · 01/05/2023 10:00

I tuck. It makes outfits look intended vs a more happenstance look. But i also love the ease of a free stomach so when it comes to dresses, half of mine are loose waisted. I can nip them in, but the comfort of loose is fabulous. I think the conversation about body shape is key to this though, I'm not thin but my waistline goes in between hips and boob. When I was young and thin the tuck looked smarter, professional, but didn't really do anything for me (nothing did, being thin was wasted on me!).

GarlicGrace · 01/05/2023 13:40

LighterNights · 01/05/2023 13:44

I'm a French Tucker.

Applesinmyhouse · 01/05/2023 14:55

Yes usually. I’m fat but bottom heavy. Tucking in gives me a shape as I still have a waist. Sometimes I just feel like wearing oversized shit though.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 01/05/2023 15:00

Never - I think it looks awful.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/05/2023 15:42

I think it depends on your body proportions. I tuck into skirts, never into jeans. I have big boobs, and with all the bloody high waisted jeans, it would look fucking ridiculous.

I really dislike half tucking ...

Dontcallmescarface · 01/05/2023 15:55

Never as I always wear long-ling shirts/tops. As for a French Tuck, that just looks like the wearer just cba to tuck the whole thing in.
