I think I’ve worked out why I always look frumpy, I never tuck shirts/blouses/t-shirts etc in … I worry Ill look fat but I’m probably making myself look fatter having all my tops untucked? lumberjack shirt in the jeans

do you tuck or not tuck?

French tuck without fail for me too. I now feel frumpy without it.

I think a French tuck is the modern equivalent of skinny jeans back in the day before they became mainstream. We all worried they'd make chubby/short legs look worse, yet they suited pretty much everyone. The French tuck is the same. As pp has said, if you have a tummy you can see it whether your top is tucked in or not, yet tucked in overall looks better and more fashionable.

Just my opinion!

TheOGCCL · 30/04/2023 20:49

Tucked in looks sharper whatever your size. Unless you’re wearing very low trousers it elongates your legs too.

Discwriter · 30/04/2023 20:50

French tuck for me too. I wear oversized shirts and it looks much more put together when I tuck the front.

MyMachineAndMe · 30/04/2023 20:52

I don't tuck anything into my jeans as it looks daft and when I'm at work I wear trousers with an elasticated waistband so I like to hide it.

RealLife101 · 30/04/2023 20:55

Both!

I tuck blouses into trousers for work. My work trousers are more forgiving on my tum + tucking the blouse in accentuates my waist.

But I don’t tuck with jeans. I don’t think it looks good if you’ve got a bit of a belly (which I have). I wear tops that hit at the right point, sort of lower tummy skimming.

I can’t be arsed with all this half in half out tucking. It only looks good on models in photographs.

Owchy · 30/04/2023 20:57

I’m 5’8 size 12 but relatively bigger bottom than top. I can fit in a 10 depending on brand and shape but also might sometimes need a 14 trousers if v slim fit.

I pretty much always tuck. My waist is my slimmest part (I’m Jessica Rabbit shaped) and tucking also creates the illusion of longer legs. Having tops cut off at the hips, which for me is my widest part relatively, is also not the best.

My view is size is irrelevant, its proportions and creating an illusion. Most people are better in fitted clothes that create shape.

For the same reason I tend to wear V necks or a flattering boat neck. I’m 28GG/30FF boobs which aren’t big on my frame, I just have a small back, but look massive in turtle necks.

It’s taken me many many years to figure out what must seem obvious to anyone else.

The word tuck has lost all meaning after reading this thread!

MrsMitford3 · 30/04/2023 21:01

HashtagShitShop · 30/04/2023 21:09

No, but then because I'm long bodied, tall and large of nork I struggle to find tops that are long enough to cover without giving the world a flash each time I raise my arms or move. If a top isn't long enough I'm aware of it and struggle to focus and keep trying to pull it down. If tucked in id feel like I would be bent down whilst walking.

StarlightLady · 30/04/2023 21:11

With most trousers/jeans sold today there is no point in wearing a top, they (annoyingly) come up to my bra.

Yvetty · 30/04/2023 21:16

ArianahX · 30/04/2023 20:11

If I was thinner I would tuck.

Agree!

ThePoetsWife · 30/04/2023 21:21

Depends on the length of the top - if it hits my waistband, no and if it hits my hips then I do a French tick. And if it's bum length, depending on the style of the top, I tend to decide on the day as it spends on whether I am wearing a jumper over it, wearing jeans or a skirt etc.

emmathedilemma · 30/04/2023 21:23

Never unless it’s something like a vest tucked in under a layer on the top.

PurpleParrotfish · 30/04/2023 21:30

I’m in my 40s and during my 20s I definitely absorbed the idea that tucking in tops was frumpy and uncool (except if you’re Katharine Hepburn).

Does anyone else remember this or have those who think it looks more stylish always thought so? If you’re old enough to remember back that far!

neverbeenskiing · 30/04/2023 21:30

I am a tucker-inner. I'm a size 12-14, hour glass shape, and if I don't tuck in it makes me look bigger than I am. I tend to go for a French tuck rather than full tuck but depends on the outfit.

CheersForThatEh · 30/04/2023 21:30

Cupoftea80 · 30/04/2023 19:42

Depends on the top and, most importantly, the bottoms! I have some jeans where it looks absolutely awful.

If I do I quite often go for the French tuck (just tucked in at the front) although last time I did this DH thought I’d done it by accident after going to the loo and tried to untuck me 🤣

My DH did the same when I tried wearing a shirt and bottoms into work 😂

Juanne · 30/04/2023 21:36

No tuck. French tuck looks like the schoolboy with his shirt hanging out effect, you scruffs!

coloursquare · 30/04/2023 21:45

@PurpleParrotfish agree! Tops tucked into jeans = frumpy

Subtlety1985 · 30/04/2023 21:47

When I’m lean, I always tuck tops/shirts/jumpers in. When I’m not at my ideal weight (like now), I just pinch and tuck the front in, or one corner of a shirt. I’ll never fully tuck at this weight as I want coverage. That’s my own confidence issue though. I see some curvy women fully tucking and looking great.

ShowUs · 30/04/2023 22:05

Depends on the outfit.

Sometimes I fully tuck.
Sometimes I don’t tuck at all.
Sometimes I’ll tuck just the front.
And sometimes I tuck but slightly pull it out so it’s more baggy.

TheNachtzehrer · 30/04/2023 22:08

It depends on the outfit, but yes, I generally either French tuck or full tuck with a belt.

HappiDaze · 30/04/2023 22:16

I don't think I've ever tucked a top in in my life

HappiDaze · 30/04/2023 22:19

Before my mum tum I wore tight fitting tops which were never long enough to tuck in.

Now I wear tops just long enough to cover my tummy

I don't know anyone female who tucks tops in that I can think of

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 30/04/2023 22:19

I think a vast majority of women who tuck look at themselves in the mirror before they leave, stood up straight, shoulders back, slightly posing and think it looks great.

Nearly everyone I see irl as theyre out and about has a big lower tummy pouch that doesn't look good.

I say this as a middle aged woman with said tummy. It seems to create said tummy pouch even in the young and relatively slim.
