I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

NEmama · 23/04/2023 09:48

Yanbu but I have turned it off

berksandbeyond · 23/04/2023 09:48

Yeah people are stupid. Ironically they’ll be the first ones complaining if there is an emergency and they aren’t told.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 23/04/2023 09:49

Our phones are old, non-smart and therefore won't receive any foghorns later. Grin

AllIeveknewonlyou · 23/04/2023 09:49

It goes on for 10 secs doesn't it? Just thought that elderly relative wouldn't know how to do it.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/04/2023 09:49

I dont get all the fuss about this. Numerous countries have had it for years and years, only in this country is it a massive conspiracy and all the people thinking they are wonderful for turning it off etc...... its not a big deal at all.

Toottooot · 23/04/2023 09:50

Wooptie fucking ping. Turn if off keep it on - good for you.

NemoandDoris · 23/04/2023 09:50

Turned the sound on my mobiles up so everyone can hear it 😀 tbh if Putin was to nuke us not sure I would want to know.

BonnieGlasses · 23/04/2023 09:51

People are ridiculous. But I have turned it off so maybe that makes me ridiculous too.

TroysMammy · 23/04/2023 09:51

With my hearing I'll probably not hear it unless I sit there looking at it at 3pm. I can sleep through thunderstorms.

StupidFaces · 23/04/2023 09:51

But do you go and boast about it everywhere so everyone can see how ‘ard you are?

That’s the bit annoying me, fine to turn it off but boasting about it is so childish!

Okunevo · 23/04/2023 09:51

Can't vote as mine is turned off but not for that reason. I also tried and failed to turn it off for my elderly grandmother, at her request. There are many valid reasons why people have felt the need to turn it off.

Elphame · 23/04/2023 09:52

I turned mine off last year. Well before this current hysteria.

Exaspa · 23/04/2023 09:52

If the asteroid is going to hit or the aliens about to land/reveal themselves (or more likely the Big Red Button is about to be pushed by whichever mad regime thinks it's a solution to massive overpopulation and our other ills) I'd personally rather not know in advance thanks.... I can't help but wonder what our lovely (not) government is really up to with all this at this particular point in time though....

IrregularChoiceFan · 23/04/2023 09:54

YANBU OP. I am finding it really irritating too. Just switch it off if you don't want it on, no need to signal to the obyss that is Facebook about how cool you think you are.

I am welcoming these alerts, especially if they also use them like the amber alerts in the states for reporting missing children. Might be the deterrent some kidnappers might need to not follow through with their plans (obviously not all but we can live in hope)

Parker231 · 23/04/2023 09:54

People are ridiculous - we’ve had it for years. Gets tested twice a year and only used for local emergencies.

The UK can be weird.

Okunevo · 23/04/2023 09:54

Android phonesIf you do not wish to receive emergency alerts, access Emergency Alerts:Android 12: Settings > Safety and Emergency.Android 11: Settings > Search for “emergency alerts” OR Settings > Notifications > Advanced Settings > Wireless Emergency Alerts.Android 10 and older OS versions: Messages app > Settings > Emergency alert history > SettingsThen toggle the switch next to Allow alerts to off.

PinkiOcelot · 23/04/2023 09:55

Ahh I forgot about that.

when the alarm sounds, do you then get a message to say what the threat is? (I know not today, I mean in a real emergency).

berksandbeyond · 23/04/2023 09:56

People who have turned it off… do you genuinely not want to know?
there was a terrorist attack in the town I live in - I would have liked to have been alerted so I could avoid the area? The alerts can be location specific so it could be used for something like that

Well exactly. Why make a song and dance about turning it off?! Or turn it into a conspiracy, when other countries have had this for years.

OddBoots · 23/04/2023 09:57

There is a fair amount of information around at the moment warning those who may be in domestic abuse situations about it and suggesting they turn it off for any hidden phone.

This is all good stuff but this won't be the only time it goes off, anyone entering that situation after this test may not think of it when getting a new phone. It doesn't feel like it should be a bit job to have part of the initial set up of a device a screen where one choses yes or no to the alerts, I understand why it would be a bad plan to default off but for some it is also a bad plan to default on - having it as a 'yes' or no' feels like the more sensible option.

Yes it’ll tell you what the emergency is, what to do (eg get indoors, close windows etc if it’s a fire for example) etc so and possibly link to more info / direct you to local news or radio for more info

Yes, local flooding, fire in chemical factory so close windows etc

Bearpawk · 23/04/2023 09:58

Yanbu, I've turned mine off as I'll be at an event and don't want it to make a racket but I'm not making a song and dance about it.

sylvandweller · 23/04/2023 09:59

If there ever is a real emergency, those who turned it off are going to get a really brutal lesson in Darwinism 😁

LemonRedwood · 23/04/2023 09:59

It doesn't feel like it should be a bit job to have part of the initial set up of a device a screen where one choses yes or no to the alerts,

I got a new phone (android) about 18 months ago and choosing to switch off the emergency alerts was part of the set up process.
