I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

There's a guy in BBC comments complaining that he didn't get an alert on his uk phone - but he's based in Spain! 😆

Ah well, we got it but we're with Vodafone- 3 had technical issues apparently

User158349890 · 23/04/2023 17:15

I wonder how long until we find out which government ministers gained from the contract for this

That's the only conspiracy theory on this subject that makes total sense.

DP's went off early but elderly DM and DF would be left unalerted as it seems their phones are too old to support the OS updates required.

Comedycook · 23/04/2023 18:06

What a novel idea, that governments globally MAY actually be attempting to protect their citizens…

Aw, bless you

My elderly DGM's didn't go off either. It's less than five years old.

"Small number unable to make or receive calls since emergency alertA small number of people have taken to social media to flag that they have not been able to make or receive calls since the 3pm alarm went off on their device.

The Cabinet Office stated that engineers had not spotted a trend of phone functions failing to work afterwards, but said officials were in the early stages of analysing the results of the trial run"

I don’t know why this made me laugh I it really did.

I turned my alert off. If I'm going to be vaporised I'd prefer not to know.

Do other people in countries that have had this system in place for years get hysterical about it like in this country? For people who have turned it off their phone in the last few days because of this test turned it off when holidaying in countries who have this system, or did you not even think about it then?

I live in a country where they've had these for a while, and I haven't heard anyone get hysterical. As for those who say they live in a small village, no-where near the sea, it doesn't flood etc. - do you never set foot out of your home town?

Inthedarkagain · 23/04/2023 21:11

I've turned it off because a) i didnt want it to make me jump and b) they didn't ask.

It's no big deal though, you either do or you don't.

the whole point is there is no need at all to be at risk of death or injury if you have the warning system switched on, and take the recommended steps to protect yourself. There is unlikely to be any injuries at all

for a meteorite strike you literally only have to get yourself inside away from windows, so in you upstairs hall, with the doors closed, or similar.

I am not remotely dense, and clearly have far more understanding of meteorites than you do,

to say you would rather not have any warning of a meteorite strike is clearly nonsense, when you could get badly hurt without a warning, and be completely safe with a warning - it is the absolutely top example of what this warning system is built to do

There was a meteor strike in Ukraine this week that no one had any idea was coming!

Regardless, I do support this system and understand what it is to be used for. I am not suggesting you are remotely dense in understanding meteorites, I’m suggesting you’re incredibly dense in understanding what the point the PP, and I, we’re actually making.

Anyway, remember. Don’t look up!

yes, and some strikes do have a short warning, and the bigger the strike, the longer the likely warning. Some do hit without any warning, and for others, there is time to send and receive warnings, and have people move to safety

Nimbostratus100 · 23/04/2023 21:38

hence why I posted the link about 1000 people being injured by flying glass, when there was no warning system available - now there is

AllIeveknewonlyou · 25/04/2023 08:14

It was quite quiet really and didn't last long. Anyone know when the official launch date is? Or is it from now?

Fujitsu was the company contracted to provide the service. Fujitsu partners with Infosys on some projects....the same Infosys that Sunak's family has shares in.

I mean its easier to use people you know, but this is another level of pocketing some extra inheritance.

Always a conspiracy over this alert system.

I saw “how did the government get my number? I never gave them it and never gave them permission to use it. All the idiots who have had the Covid jab are being tracked my the government anyway so why do they need this as well?” 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm really happy there are lots of differing opinions and suspicion towards those in power. we are lucky to be able to have that luxury, compared to some other countries in some other periods of history.

@Sublime66 so do you think everyone who had the vaccine ended up with a chip in them?
