I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

Unfortunately the media has recently played a massive role in whipping up the masses into black or white division of either "you play along and trust everything we tell you" or you're categorised as some fruit loop.
So many people unable to think independently who fall into this trap of trusting those in power that everything is ok when it's absolutely not. We should be listening and empathising with one another not acting like under developed school children.

Yes, it's such independent thinking to bleat whatever you've read/watched direct from facebook and tiktok Confused

JenniferBooth · 28/04/2023 23:55

@BertieBotts same could be said about Mumsnet no?

BertieBotts · 29/04/2023 07:17

Well, yes, but I don't know anybody who believes everything they read on mumsnet. Nor anybody who agrees with everything "they" say (assume that means the news etc) or anyone who thinks people are fruit loops if they disagree with something that they have read or seen. Mainly the fruit loops are the ones who reflexively disagree with everything in the "Mainstream Media" but instead spout a solid list of random conspiracies they have seen on facebook.

It's not good to trust any one source blindly.

Fujitsu was the company contracted to provide the service. Fujitsu partners with Infosys on some projects....the same Infosys that Sunak's family has shares in.

So, not a company that 'Sunak's family' has shares in. Interesting to see the expectation that men are responsible for their wives' financial arrangements though ...

So you don't consider a wife to be "family"? He may not be responsible for her financial arrangements but you can bet he benefits from them.

As I already said, it should be more about people looking out for others, our wellbeing, empathising rather than accepting that what we are told to do is in our best interest. Look and use your initiative.
if the last few years haven’t made people realise that then there is zero hope for a better future.

This particular conspiracy theory is just a knee jerk assumption that any political action by people you disagree with is motivated by personal financial gain.

However marriage formally unites the finances of two people so it's generally reasonable for office holders to have to declare interests held in their spouse's name as well as their own, regardless of the sex of either. If they got divorced, or she died, I bet Sunak wouldn't play the high minded "feminist" "my wife is an independent person in her own right and her finances shouldn't be under scrutiny because of who she happens to be married to" card. If she didn't want her finances to be under scrutiny she shouldn't have entered a legal partnership with a public figure. And that absolutely goes for Philip May etc.

That's a good response, but I have to point out that Sunak married in 2009 before he was even a member of the Conservative Party, let alone an MP, so I don't think it's reasonable to use the 'shouldn't have entered a legal partnership with a public figure' argument for Akshata Murty.

That applies to a lot of spouses of people who later go into politics: when you stand for or accept a government office then you do it in the knowledge that your finances and that of your spouse will be subject to legitimate scrutiny. Loads and loads of prominent people have decided not to take public office for that reason.

If your spouse decides to stand for public office even though you really really don't want them to then that's grounds for divorce. A FOAF of mine was a reasonably prominent politician who specifically decided against running for party leader (and they'd have had a realistic chance of winning) because their spouse vetoed it on the grounds of increased intrusion.

OK, so that's a different argument.
