Posting here for traffic.

Had mild vertigo for 3 days.
Doc said do Epley. Said google it and do it at home - i don't want you to do it here in my surgery ...

Did it half an hour ago here at home and i feel like i'm about 300 percent worse!

It's taken me ages to type this

I feel like i can't move my head at all without wanting to throw up. Is this right??? Is it going to go away?

If you have BPPV - ie when you move your head it carries on spinning, rather than it starts spinning when you’re sitting doing nothing - then my experience is that it will get better and that Eply does help, although not immediately, you have to do it several times a day for several days. But I haven’t had your experience of it feeling so much worse immediately afterwards. I’m not clinical so can’t advise but I’d be tempted to have another go and see if it dislodges something and makes things a bit better.

Laiste · 04/04/2023 11:39

I'm scared to do it again !!!

Yes if i was sitting still with my head level i felt perfectly fine. It was looking up or down movement setting it off. So yes, BPPV. Doc said that.

I feel so much worse though. It's an hour now since maneuver. Just turning my head to look left and right is horrible Sad

I had the eye flicking/room spinning thing while doing it. Ugh.

dont do the eply manouvere unless you know which ear you have the problem in. Do you know which side it is in? If you do it to the wrong side, it will get worse not better

FlibbertyGibbitt · 04/04/2023 11:46

Try the Brandt Daroff one, I find that helps. Also maybe get some Sturgeon travel sickness tablets to help . It’s horrible, I feel your pain. You have to keep doing the exercises though to get the crystals back in position.

Laiste · 04/04/2023 11:47

@Nimbostratus100 oh god i bet i've done it wrong then.

I think it's my left ear. It feels weird. Very slightly as if there's a bit of water gone in there or something.

So i did it for the left side.

When I had BPPV, the only thing I could do for an entire day was sit very very still with my eyes closed. I couldn't open my eyes because the world was literally spinning, I threw up if I tried to move, I couldn't lie down as that made it 10x worse...the day after, it was better and I did the half somersault maneuver (not as athletic as it sounds!) twice a day for a few days after and it gradually got better. Epley did nothing for me, but the half somersault worked better.

Moonlightsonatas · 04/04/2023 11:48

I second trying Stugeron, it’s the only thing that works for DH. He always finds the Epley makes it worse.

Laiste · 04/04/2023 11:49

@FlibbertyGibbitt doc prescribed anti sick tablets. (long name i'm not turning my head to look at box)

I'll look up the BD one, Thank you.

Sounds like the Brandt Daroff one. Mine is the right ear, when it’s bad I roll over asleep and go dizzy so what’s all that about 😩

Laiste · 04/04/2023 11:51

@Qhaecciarr half somersault!!? You've made me laugh thank you. I'll look at that as well.

You had it very badly at the start. I wasn't that bad - until this damn maneuver!

Ah. So he just takes the anti sick and rides it out?

It goes away without moving the crystals?

Epley is hard to do on your own. I've alwys found this technique works... sometimes I need to do it a few times and sometimes it works immediately.

Moonlightsonatas · 04/04/2023 11:56

@Laiste yes, although it still varies how long it takes to go away. Such a horrible condition, hope you get some relief soon.

massivenamechnage · 04/04/2023 11:58

You can't do the Epley alone
I have BPPV, I see an ENT Consultant at Bupa who sorts it out for about £250 a visit if my DH cant get the Epley right

He was not amused then the GP prescribed me tablets to try and fob me off (sorry cant recall what they were) and said that for BPPV they could actually do more harm than good.

your doctor should have told you which side to do it for! Get back to him/her and say you need clearer instructions

you can do elpy alone - you are being conned! But you do need to do it in the correct direction for the ear that is effected

£250 a visit! wow! they saw you coming

the anti sickness tablets do help, abut also I quite often find I feel better once I have actually been sick

Laiste · 04/04/2023 12:02

@JackiePlace i've watched that video. It makes sense. I'll give it a go in a min ..... <scared>

Moonlightsonatas thank you. tempted to ride it out as so don't want to do any more moves ... but i guess i need to get rid of this asap as can't drive with it.

@massivenamechnage bloody hell 250!! yeah i'm not doing the Epley again. Pinning my hopes on the one above.

This. The consultant I saw for my BPPV years ago would be absolutely horrified that any doctor told a patient to just google it and do it themselves. It can be in either ear, in different chambers within each ear, or even in both ears (which is what I had). Different sides and types of BPPV need different manoeuvres and if you get it wrong you risk making it worse.

I am sorry, but you cant legally drive for 6 months now, anyway

Laiste · 04/04/2023 12:05

Right - still feel worse than i did before Epley, but i'm going to try that Carol Foster one now

cross fingers

really? I have it and my GP (and the private one I used) didnt say anything about which ear?

should I be worried??

Eply doesnt make me feel ill, but the one where you are on your hands and knees and do something makes me want to vomit

@Laiste maybe ask DR for some aniti nausea meds as well

well, you can do the eply turning your head it two different directions, only one will be right for the ear that is affected. But if you have done it in the past, it wont cause any ongoing problems after that episode is over, so dont worry
