To worry we're going to have a nuclear war

A nice lighthearted thread for you all on this Wednesday morning...

Just interested to know how many of you here actually think we might be heading for a nuclear war? Just feels like we seem to be inching closer and closer towards one and I'm really not sure our little old country would hold up well. The news doesn't seem to be helping with my catastrophising either.

It's crossed my mind a few times lately and I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the same (YANBU) or you think it's never going to happen / absolutely ridiculous (YABU)? 😬

OP posts:

I think it’s highly unlikely. However, if it did happen what can we do? Nothing. There is really no point in worrying about it. If the news stresses you out don’t watch/read.

This.

If it happens we’ll probably all be dead before we know about it.

YABU

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/03/2023 08:36

I grew up in the Cold War. I was more scared then. As I’ve got older it seems less likely to me. Who is actually going to press the button to destroy the world?

Im on Venlafaxine. Maybe that’s what’s taking the edge off?

Im so bored of willy waving idiots. If they had a few toddlers to deal with single handedly they’re be none of this crap.

Neededanewuserhandle · 22/03/2023 08:37

It's depressing that cunts like Putin can still do so much harm, isn't it?

Choppypog · 22/03/2023 08:37

It's a threat to show power and penis size, nothing more.
I'm not really sure blowing up the world is in anyone's best interests.

Anyway, if it did happen, we'd be dead before we can even comprehend it.

I completely agree.

Lifelessordinary1 · 22/03/2023 08:40

That's a difficult question to answer because not all nuclear war/weapons are the the same. A full out nuclear war - where there is a huge exchange of weapons is unlikely - certainly in the forseeable future but a limited exchange is likely but would probably not involve the UK.

BMW6 · 22/03/2023 08:40

What's the point in fretting about it? There's nothing you can do to prevent it!
Stop reading/watching the news or SM for a while to stop feeding your anxiety.

I think it's very highly unlikely to happen because everyone knows nothing would survive. Not even China. Sure some will be bunkered down, but with the prospect of coming back out to what after 50 years? The Iron Age with residual radiation?

I'm sure I read it's more likely that Putin, or whoever, will fabricate a 'natural disaster' such as a tsunami to destabilise us. But I share your fears, especially with this alert system being tested in April. Not that much to look forward to this morning 😟

ZiriForEver · 22/03/2023 08:41

I don't know how probable it is. Not terribly probable as it doesn't make any rational sense, just with Putin being a madman, rationality isn't all.

I'm sure that if we all bow to Russia to appease them and avoid this eventuality, we will hear more of it every now and than.

Ireallywantsomechips · 22/03/2023 08:42

What @ArseInTheCoOpWindow said!

It’s a shame that the fact that small Willy competitions are making people like the OP genuinely anxious.

I highly doubt anything would happen, I don’t know what delusions Russia and China have about a post apocalyptic world but it definitely won’t go the way they would hope!

namechangeforthisbleep · 22/03/2023 08:42

It's annoying when people say what's the point in fretting about it, like you can help your feelings. For what it's worth, after 911 I had an unhealthy obsession with terrorism and panicked in every public transport situation I was in. Not sure how that ended but certainly not by people telling me to stop fretting.

TinySaltLick · 22/03/2023 08:42

It would never happen, even the most unhinged know that there would be immediate retaliation and everyone would lose, it is simply posturing

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/03/2023 08:47

If China nukes the west it’s lost its main export market!

I presume we won't be around to find out really

Ne’er a truer word spoken

butterfliedtwo · 22/03/2023 08:52

If it happens we'll be dead soon anyway. There's certainly no way I'll be trying to survive in a nuclear wasteland.

Cut back on news consumption if you're anxious.

Greenshake · 22/03/2023 08:54

This sort of post is exactly what Putin wants. The idea behind all this is to cause fear and anxiety. Don’t buy into it!

Yes. It all seems mad in this day and age. Mind you. He is.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/03/2023 08:47

If China nukes the west it’s lost its main export market!

Plus the minute they launch any nuclear weapons, the west will do the same, and they know this.

There won't be any world, let alone a market.

illiterato · 22/03/2023 08:58

Unlikely but I imagine the people calling for Trident to be scrapped a few years ago are feeling like that opinion hasn't aged well.
