To worry we're going to have a nuclear war

Tiredmummaoftwo · 22/03/2023 08:28

A nice lighthearted thread for you all on this Wednesday morning...

Just interested to know how many of you here actually think we might be heading for a nuclear war? Just feels like we seem to be inching closer and closer towards one and I'm really not sure our little old country would hold up well. The news doesn't seem to be helping with my catastrophising either.

It's crossed my mind a few times lately and I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the same (YANBU) or you think it's never going to happen / absolutely ridiculous (YABU)? 😬

I don’t care as long as it wipes me and my family out quickly and painlessly. It’s better than carrying on in this world!

Icedlatteplease · 22/03/2023 16:30

If Putin was going to use nuclear weapons selectively or otherwise, he would have fired them at the Ukraine already.

But no we have actually reverted to meat grinder style warfare.

The bombs tend not to be pointed at population centres, but at military targets. How close is your nearest RAF base?

I'm 1.2 miles away from Air Command so feel I may go quickly 😀 they'll be OK as they have a bunker to go down!

Well we are fucked, live near an Army base and RAF base. Also close to a nuclear power plant.

SerafinasGoose · 22/03/2023 16:57

Russia is a toothless tiger. Putin can't even take on Ukraine let alone the rest of the planet. He's shown himself up on the global stage as weak, and in doing so has turned his nation into a puppet to China. They can now coopt Russia as an ally but with China as the 'senior partner' rather than the other way round.

If Putin attacks us he'll bring the whole of NATO down on his own neck. He's also threatened Finland with dire consequences should they join NATO, which they're right on the cusp of doing.

It's propaganda, no more than this.

extremeprivacypreferred · 22/03/2023 17:19

Why was the 80s scarier than this - why did you all feel it was more likely then than it could be now with the war in Ukraine, and how things could go there?

I'm not worrying about being nuked because there's fuck all I can do, so it sort of doesn't register as suitable for worrying about Grin but I'm curious about why people always say the 80s was scarier?

Becauae it was constant. And the world felt on a knife edge all the time.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 22/03/2023 17:28

Today I just don't care & the nihilistic me says "Bring it on motherfucker yippee bleeding ki yay you scaredy cat Mr ooh I think I'm so clever Puttanesca"
(that being our nickname for Putin. Vlad the Impala is another one)

Tomorrow I'll probably be in full on Pollyannaism mode & will still not care as the world is a wonderful place & no one will wreck it.

Friday I'll still not care as I know that all life forms share at least one essential purpose: survival, so why would Vlad the Impala throw his pram over the edge of the cliff as he'd be dead & we'd all be dead or dying.
The rational me is so bored with him & agree with

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
"Im so bored of willy waving idiots. If they had a few toddlers to deal with single handedly they’re be none of this crap"

i wish we could send in Villanelle to finish Putin off. Or maybe a real Villanelle or two or three are just hiding in plain sight waiting for their moment to neutralise him. Or the Chinese will sort out it as they're not happy bunnies at the moment.

IncompleteSenten · 22/03/2023 17:29

Highly unlikely but not 0% chance.

If Putin is as ill as the rumours suggest and has 'nothing to lose' then I suspect what would most likely happen would be he'd get a bullet to the head if his generals realised he was actually going to do it.

Probably because it was a constant nuclear stand off all the time through the cold war.

The USSR in terms of government was a lot more opaque than the Russian government is today and there was very much an eastern western divide with hardly anyone going over to the east from the west and vice versa. There wasn't really any mingling across the Iron Curtain.

There was also a lot more bombs (nuclear) and conventional weapons. Although obviously there are still enough today to destroy everyone.

It was more a kind of maybe lower level alert all the time from maybe the 50s to the 90s with some events increasing the tension rather than what is going on in Ukraine at the moment.

I think also the East and West were a lot better matched in terms of conventional weapons back in the cold war - in fact I think the NATO plan in a war was to try to stem the superior numbers of the Warsaw Pact with a limited nuclear response, whereas nowadays the West is hugely superior in conventional capability.

extremeprivacypreferred · 22/03/2023 17:38

Interesting, thanks for the explanations.

Butchyrestingface · 22/03/2023 18:18

I always remember that movie which describes nuclear war as "a strange game where the only winning move is not to play".

Lostmummy5 · 22/03/2023 18:20

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 22/03/2023 09:45

I have to correct you on the emergency alert system - this has been in the pipeline for many years and in fact the government have been criticised for being so behind other countries. The timing does come off as pretty bad, though!

I really don't think we should believe in everything what government tell us. This is just to show they are working "for our wellbeing and safety" - in case something will happen - "people will be warned". It will cause massive panic, nothing else.

Can people please stop posting these types of threads in AIBU and chat it’s soooo triggering! Please stick to the news section.

@LolaGarden

I'm sorry you find it triggering. I'm curious how old you are & why you find it triggering.

but to your point, it's not news, it is chat/AIBU/ etc.

there's no 'news', just oeopke wanting to chat or kniw if people think their worries are unreasonable or not.

maybe it would help you to get some therapy for it? because on here & generally online, it's not going to go away anytime soon 🌷

@vodkaredbullgirl

When it looks like kicking off, can I come & stay please🙏

@Tiredmummaoftwo I don't think it'll happen. I watch a documentary a while ago talking about the people surrounding him & the number of people who would have to do xyz before it could be activated and that they know it would be the end of them too, so aren't in any hurry to enable him.

I'm very scared of dying from Covid. I have underlyings so I'm vulnerable. But I'm scared of the process of dying, not of being dead. I'd drive towards it if we got any notice & hope it's a quick end.

I know it's not easy to just not worry about it, but can you try to work out what it is you're actually scared of? And maybe then you can be less worried?!

War Games! An '80s classic.

So of it all kicks off, we're heading to @vodkaredbullgirl 's place and watching War Games, few drinks. Good to have a plan. I feel better already.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/03/2023 21:52

40 command's sound like the playing tonight, maybe it's the start lol

DashboardConfessional · 22/03/2023 22:04

Bloody hell, don't recommend Threads to people who are anxious about nukes!

hattie43 · 22/03/2023 22:10

Sabre rattling . It won't happen

Franticbutterfly · 22/03/2023 22:19

It's highly unlikely, but I did test out how many we could fit into our downstairs loo at the weekend (6 plus a dog for those that are interested).

Turnipworkharder · 22/03/2023 22:44

I seem to have missed all this stuff in the 80s. I've no idea how but I've got no memory of it ?

I was thinking that, but then realised it probably wasn’t covered in Jackie or Mizz.

I’m not sure it’ll happen and I doubt it’d become an all out global war, but if there was ever a time to bump Putin off, now would be super.
