To worry we're going to have a nuclear war

A nice lighthearted thread for you all on this Wednesday morning...

Just interested to know how many of you here actually think we might be heading for a nuclear war? Just feels like we seem to be inching closer and closer towards one and I'm really not sure our little old country would hold up well. The news doesn't seem to be helping with my catastrophising either.

It's crossed my mind a few times lately and I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the same (YANBU) or you think it's never going to happen / absolutely ridiculous (YABU)? 😬

If you can't handle the thread hide it.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/03/2023 23:27

No, it won't happen. Dont worry op.

Who is actually going to press the button to destroy the world?

A small of stature megalomaniac who wants to wreak as much havoc on the world as possible and is looking for the slightest excuse to move into the realms of mutually assured destruction? He would have the last laugh if he pressed the button, he knows that. He doesn't care what happens to the world - he has an underground nuclearproof metropolis to move into.

You do realise that even in Russia there is a chain of command that are required in order to actually use a nuclear weapon? Even Putin cannot just order that; there is a chain of at least 12 people (or so there were around the time of the Cold War) who each have to approve each stage of launch and agree with the decision. Even if Putin is mad, it would be hard to find a collective group willing to agree to release a nuclear weapon, knowing full well that they and their families will all end up dead too… so there’s that.

First rule is. Never give anything headspace unless you can control or change it.

Forget about it. Live your life and enjoy

There's no such thing as a 'nuclear war'. There may be a nuclear strike (or two). Then that's it, really.

However, with current nuclear missile capability, I predict it's more likely that there will be one, smaller, strike only. This is a massive step for any nation to take, and I don't think it would dare take another. The strike might win an ongoing conflict, but the country's standing forever stained. It could precipitate a larger, global, conflict.

Unfortunately, it is coming but it won't be anything to do with Russia. It'll be over Taiwan and between the USA and China where it kicks off.

The emergency alarm testing is to normalise the public to such a thing, the same way as they test the alarms regularly at nuclear powerplants. Terrifying if you've never heard one before, old hat if you live in the area and are used to them.

Unlikely but I imagine the people calling for Trident to be scrapped a few years ago are feeling like that opinion hasn't aged well.

Speaking as someone who wanted trident scrapped, I can confirm that yes you are correct!

It is worrying when you read the latest about Putin. Especially now with the China involvement. But I don't think there will be a nuclear war. Because there would be no winner.

Adrelaxzz · 23/03/2023 00:10

I grew up in the 80s our three big worries were terrorism (IRA then), nuclear war (communists v capitalists) and global warming. The last one is the only one we should all be shitting ourselves over.

Nindaelita · 23/03/2023 00:40

I think I'm more worried about population control.
This war might just be a distraction to what's really coming, or a way for us to not rebel against what they will impose because war creates need.

Digital currency
15 min cities
Emergency alerts for natural events
The "line is being built
Petrol cars slowly discontinued
Blackout tests

There is also:
Excessive deaths after covid happened
Excessive people dependant on medication after covid happened
Birth rates slowly decreasing

I don't know. Maybe I just read and watch too much stuff.

YABU. These threads are getting tiresome now...

Mybumlooksbig · 24/03/2023 22:18

Yanbu it terrifies.me

XenoBitch · 24/03/2023 22:36

I try not to worry, as it is something that is 100% out of my control.

ProtectMotherNature · 27/01/2024 18:40

I think we have become a very likely target for Russian nuclear missiles. Liz Truss has been mentioned by name a number of times by Putin when talking about nuclear strikes, and the UK is mentioned regularly as a possible target. Additionally, I don't think following the US blindly into conflict is a good thing; it makes me wonder why the support of a small (and increasingly political insignificant) island is so important to them.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 28/01/2024 02:13

well, we were a likely target for russian missiles in the 80's and that never happened. I wasted 10 years of my childhood worrying about it back then so now I don't give a f. Nuke us u neanderthals. We all lose in the end if you do. Fucking children.

MargaretSnatcher · 28/01/2024 05:42

It won't happen so stop worrying.

Ohwhatadag · 28/01/2024 06:53

I don't know about nuclear war, but I do live in a country close to Russian. They have begun national conscription (albeit only for certain industries first). Some military bod also gave a speech telling the country that we had our heads on the sand regarding Russia and to prepare for war.

I am gradually heading similar about neighbouring countries. Even the uk (but you can't the tell difference in the uk between a politician being serious and trying score political points and/or attention seeking).
