To hate it when posters decide to focus on the minutiae of a thread?

So I have to use a hypothetical example so I’m not making TAATs. But for example someone posts at the end of their tether with parenting and amongst countless other issues one of their children have chucked sand around and they’ve spent the afternoon trying to hoover it up. And then posters decide to ‘help’ by telling the OP to get a new hoover, often delivered with ‘job done’ and the Hmm face rather than actually supporting with the whole issue!

It happened to me recently on a thread (not that example) and drives me mad. AIBU and should expect barked two word solutions to all difficulties in life?

OP posts:
BeingBrave22 · 21/03/2023 18:00

Don't read those threads. Job done 🙄

KTheGrey · 21/03/2023 18:04

Yep. Lots of either passive aggressive nonsense responses or people who struggle with reading comprehension online everywhere.

Theyresexpeoplemn · 21/03/2023 18:08

There's been a lot more of it recently. I do wish other posters would completely ignore and carry on with the thread. Unfortunately, this usually doesn't happen and the knobby idiots take over and derail the thread.

See Miss Clever Dick showed up!

I remember years ago, a woman posted something on AIBU about something quite trivial and somebody commented, 'get some real problems'.

The poor woman said that she had plenty of real problems, include a seriously ill husband but was just posting for a bit of a vent about the AIBU issue. It was just horrible!

🤣🤣is that me?! :) Sorry OP, I'm bored! And to be fair, your post was calling out for it :) couldn't help myself! Yes, I do need to get a life :) well, today I do :)!

ReliantRobyn · 21/03/2023 18:23

Man up !

WolfFoxHare · 21/03/2023 18:30

Yes, too many posters forget there are real people with real problems asking for help, and post something dismissive that they think is clever to show off, instead of being genuinely helpful.

Neededanewuserhandle · 21/03/2023 18:34

Oh goody, more "you're all so horrible and wrong". MN (and AIBU) is optional. The replies you (and others) get won't always fit in with your own cosy, blinkered view of how things should be done - but sometimes they do.

EarthlyNightshade · 21/03/2023 18:35

Yes, I hear you.
Sometimes someone will post a real problem but mention skiing or write "should of" and instead of decent advice get a whole load of people telling them it's "should have" or "if you can afford skiing, you're wrong about ...(whatever it is)."
I blame attention spans and comprehension skills. And people being mean/jealous.

malificent7 · 21/03/2023 18:44

The spelling and grammar corrections are the worst.

Op: " my mums' partner just died.
Poster: "don't you mean mum's?"

PuppyMonkey · 21/03/2023 18:50

I don’t have an opinion but minutiae is a cracking word. Let’s discuss this. Grin

CruCru · 21/03/2023 18:51

Yes, I know what you mean. Or an OP writes a sensible, three paragraph post about whatever it is and loads of people don’t read it properly and reply with a load of nonsense.

I have sympathy for people missing something in a mammoth wall of text (but in fairness, I don’t read or comment on those).

yes, and sometimes the first poster gets in wrong and says "you shouldn't have punched him in the face" and everyone piles on agreeing even though OP never punched anyone in the face and just mentioned they might like a glass of punch with their picky tea.

LakeTiticaca · 21/03/2023 18:58

Those who insist on correcting minor spelling or grammatical errors really are the pits and need banning from the tinternet permanently

SalmonEile · 21/03/2023 18:59

“Why didn’t you simply phone them?”
when the poster says in their OP they tried to call and got no answer

Mangogogogo · 21/03/2023 19:07

Or they post something absolutely nonsensical that they ‘would do’ when noone on gods earth would do ever

Caramac555 · 21/03/2023 19:13

It's the threads where someone asks about something such as the best type of fence to buy.

And then we get two posters arguing about the law regarding property boundaries for the next 4 pages.

One was probably an estate agent in the 90s and the other had a fence blow down in the 1987 storm and both are desperate to outdo each to be Queen of The Fence Thread.

gencritdd · 21/03/2023 19:13

I do this sometimes. I have adhd and ASD and I can hyper focus on on something and it's hard for me to let it go. Sorry if I do this on anyone and annoy them it's not intentional.

In the example, my "get a new hoover" would be a practical something I'd be suggesting that I would think would help.

LucyLeave · 21/03/2023 19:20

There was one the other day where someone was feeling a bit isolated at home but was learning to drive and hoped that would improve her situation.

I gave up reading the thread when 'The Stupid' turned up and demanded to know why didn't she learn to drive.

bussteward · 21/03/2023 19:20

I sort of secretly love it, because it’s strangers on the internet so I’m not really invested, just browsing while feeding the baby. And it’s hilarious:

”While having an ice cream in the park with DC, I was caught up in a police chase earlier with three helicopters, Lord Lucan and an escaped tiger!”

First reply: “Why are you feeding DC ice cream, that’s so much sugar.”

Second reply: “Ice cream in this weather? It’s freezing.”

Third poster: “It’s not freezing everywhere” and then an argument about the exact temperature takes over the thread.

And this website is FREE!

TheNoodlesIncident · 21/03/2023 19:27

I don't mind it if it doesn't derail the entire thread, but forms its own little siding and is a genuinely helpful aside to the OP.

Also vaguely irritating is those people who misunderstand that something another poster mentioned is not actually the experience of the OP but another person, and form their response based on the dud info.

And people who post advice about a topic they clearly know nothing about, or their knowledge is at least a decade out of date. Why is their opinion so valuable that they have to share it, even though it's useless bordering on harmful?

And yes, the number of people who don't even read the first opening post properly and suggest, usually righteously, that the OP should have done... something they did do, and said so. So we'd know.

It's like daytime TV sometimes.

adriftabroad · 21/03/2023 19:34

There can be a huge breaking news story...

"source"
"do you have a source?"

Caramac555 · 21/03/2023 19:41

And also the laundry threads

AIBU to wash my bedsheets once a week?

90% of readers agree you sound like a normal human being.

One will insist you are a disgusting individual for rolling around in your own dead skin cells.

Another will insist you're being a goady twat about owning a washing machine.

Another will suggest you drag your sheets down to the river and bang them on a rock
