I'm almost in tears (of frustration, not sadness) trying to figure out how i can take thyroid medication and all my supplements. And still have coffee and tea in the mornings and afternoons?

My head is so fucking foggy. I have low ferritin, folate and B12 and borderline vit D.

I take my thyroid meds first thing, so 6am on a work day, and then drink my first cup of coffee half an hour later.

I just take the vitamin D after dinner as supposed to be taken with some form of dietary fat, and so far so good it seems to be lifting my levels at a modest pace.

Think I will start injecting the B12 as one less thing to worry about?

But where can I fit in the folate, and then some sort of iron to raise my ferritin? Can't remember (aforementioned foggy brain) all the rules but pretty sure these are best taken on empty stomach - but not within 4 hours of thyroid medication?

Then Jesus Christ I know some people will just suggest giving up coffee and tea but I'm just not able to do this. Hot drinks that taste nice are so comforting to me. I mainly stick to herbal teas after 5pm but earlier in the day I need plenty of tea, obviously I'm going to have to change it up a bit but dread more restrictions.

What is your schedule if you are low in these and supplementing?

And then I keep reading that Vitamin K should be taken with Vit D to stop calcification in the arteries?

But too much vit K is really bad? And not routinely done on blood work so how can you keep an eye on that?

I just feel so drained by it all but need to fix it.

Before bed. I don’t drink caffeinated drinks after 4pm.
Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
That’s my regime for multivits & iron.

ImCrunchyOnTheOutside · 12/03/2023 21:07

I have my thyroxine as soon as my alarm goes off.
Breakfast 30 mins later when I take my vitamin D & folate.
Ferrous fumerate I take at work 30 mins before I have lunch and at home before dinner but this is only every other day. I will see if I can find the link I read to say why.
Hydroxocobalamin (my B12) I self inject but have also taken otc tablets before evening meal.

ghostyslovesheets · 12/03/2023 21:09

Thyroid med and Vit D after my bath in the evening

B12 I get 3 monthly as I need it medically

ghostyslovesheets · 12/03/2023 21:10

Oh and I tend not to have tea or coffee after 4pm

acuppatea · 12/03/2023 21:14

I have a cup of tea as soon as I wake up, about 6 or 7am. I have my thyroxine after I've done the school run about 9.30am. Then I have my bit D, b12, folate and iron liquid either after lunch or dinner (I keep these ones in the kitchen so usually take them while im waiting for food to cook).

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 12/03/2023 21:14

I take my iron medication at 10, with orange juice , so 4 hours after the levo. I had to write down a schedule and set phone alarms at first because I’m also on Lanzoprazole which has to be 30m at least after the levothyroxine and 30m before eating. It’s a bit easier for me because I drink decaf and also the one upside of insomnia is that I am often awake at a very early hour so can take the levothyroxine then .

DorisFlies · 12/03/2023 21:16

I take my thyroxine at bed time. Don't have caffeine in supper drink. Vits I take in the morning

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/03/2023 21:17

When I was taken two ferrous sulphate a day (best on an empty stomach, at least two hours before/after caffeine/milk), I took one late evening and one in the middle of the night when I woke up for a wee.

Flossiemoss · 12/03/2023 21:21

Thyroxine on waking. Cup of tea 30 minutes later.
/ b12 / folate /ferritin - lunch or teatime with orange juice. Depending on day off or not.
so I always leave 4 hours between thyroxine and iron or thyroxine won’t absorb.

I drink tea the rest of the time. It is easier on days off though.

SOWK · 12/03/2023 21:31

I take my thyroid meds in the evening - this was suggested by an endocrinologist because I was struggling so much with morning fatigue. Definitely easier to space food/coffee as well.

Terrifiedofwastingmylife · 12/03/2023 21:31

So would it be ok to take the folate and iron at various times in the evening - what about last thing at night, two hours after having dinner?

Does anyone think herbal teas (without caffeine, ginger or valerian or something) would mess up absorption if I drank a cup just before bed and then took folate and an iron supplement?

I can make it work if I can just get into a routine of taking them late at night.

I set alarm for 6, take thyroxine, feed cat, sleep for an hour, get up, coffee. Vitamin d at bedtime.

Could you take your folate and iron with your first herbal tea at 5 pm and have dinner some time after that and your vitamin d?

1990s · 12/03/2023 21:35

Sorry to be dumb but what is the interaction between vit D / folate and tea or coffee?

KatzP · 12/03/2023 21:37

I use the better you vitamin d with k spay so that doesn't matter in terms of food etc. I split the rest so by vit b complex (covering b12 and folate) I have with breakfast or lunch and the iron before dinner.

better you also do a vit b complex spray which I'll move to once I don't need the high dose supplements.

AnyFucker · 12/03/2023 21:43

I drink tea and coffee all day long and take these meds whenever I remember

My thyroid levels have been stable for 20 years. I can’t speak for my vitamin levels but I tend to think life is too short to obsess about perfect schedules. The vitamins I take are way over daily recommended levels anyway.

refreshingseahorse · 12/03/2023 21:46

I take thyroxine, vitamin d, and a few other things in a big handful around the same time I drink a cup of coffee in the morning. I had no idea this was a problem. I would google why I shouldn't, but it sounds like it's easier not to.

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 12/03/2023 21:47

I take d and b and never really worried about it. I usually have coffee like half an hour after.
If I took these in the evening i couldn't sleep.

Can you split it so you have some early and medicine which can interact later?

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 12/03/2023 21:47

Tbh i also never knew it was a problem

ifyougochasingrabbits · 12/03/2023 21:52

🫣

I take thyroxin, iron and vit D

I take them all together with a light breakfast (banana or piece of toast) about 9am about an hour after I have a coffee.

Is this bad ???? If so when should I be taking it ? 😞

HELP

Rummikub · 12/03/2023 21:54

It’s do with effective absorption.

Thyroxine not within 4 hours of iron or vit D. And I think there should be a two hour gap between iron and vit D.

Its a pain trying to factor it all in.

I must speak to pharmacist again about BP tablets and interactions.

sunshinestar1986 · 12/03/2023 21:58

Thyroxine as soon as I wake up
Tea whenever I want, I only drink coffee socially
I'm supposed to have iron 3 times a day!
But I can't absorb it well and it gives me terrible stomach issues
So now I've started eating eggs and meat daily
Which I never used to, so eggs gor breakfast and a bit of beef or lamb with my dinner
Vitamin d i always forget!

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 12/03/2023 22:00

I take thyroxine at night. Think they found it was absorbed better then. Certainly works better for me at night, even though the label still says morning. Not hard then to take it without other meds.

lemoncurdcrumpets · 12/03/2023 22:02

I take my vitamin D and folic acid when I wake up as that’s when I remember. Had never occurred to me that I had to time them around anything!

Christmascracker0 · 12/03/2023 22:02

It’s best to take iron on an empty stomach but it doesn’t always sit well! I take all my tablets with my evening meal because it’s easiest for me.
