I'm almost in tears (of frustration, not sadness) trying to figure out how i can take thyroid medication and all my supplements. And still have coffee and tea in the mornings and afternoons?

My head is so fucking foggy. I have low ferritin, folate and B12 and borderline vit D.

I take my thyroid meds first thing, so 6am on a work day, and then drink my first cup of coffee half an hour later.

I just take the vitamin D after dinner as supposed to be taken with some form of dietary fat, and so far so good it seems to be lifting my levels at a modest pace.

Think I will start injecting the B12 as one less thing to worry about?

But where can I fit in the folate, and then some sort of iron to raise my ferritin? Can't remember (aforementioned foggy brain) all the rules but pretty sure these are best taken on empty stomach - but not within 4 hours of thyroid medication?

Then Jesus Christ I know some people will just suggest giving up coffee and tea but I'm just not able to do this. Hot drinks that taste nice are so comforting to me. I mainly stick to herbal teas after 5pm but earlier in the day I need plenty of tea, obviously I'm going to have to change it up a bit but dread more restrictions.

What is your schedule if you are low in these and supplementing?

I drink tea and coffee all day long and take these meds whenever I remember

My thyroid levels have been stable for 20 years. I can’t speak for my vitamin levels but I tend to think life is too short to obsess about perfect schedules. The vitamins I take are way over daily recommended levels anyway.

Good for you if it works.

My thyroid is steady but i am chronically low in all these areas outlined, and am on my knees with fatigue.

I am trying desperately to claw back quality of life so looking to maximise absorption. Hoping to feel less like shit. Not obsessing over a perfect schedule for the sake of it!

I use the better you vitamin d with k spay so that doesn't matter in terms of food etc

I LOVED the better you vit d spray! Unfortunately, despite spraying religiously I couldn't get my vitamin D above 22.

Now on some type of capsule, and have risen to 40 since last August so going to stick with this for a while.

What dose of vit D are you on op?

Rummikub · 12/03/2023 22:14

Mine was through the floor so had to take prescribed high dose ones. Now it’s just once a week. Takes while though to get up there.

Season0fTheWitch · 12/03/2023 22:16

When I took thyroxine no schedule made them work. Look into Thyroid-S if you can afford to buy privately.

I take 5000iu vit D and a bog standard vit c at the same time.

Season0fTheWitch · 12/03/2023 22:17

If you're sticking to levo, try splitting the dose to morning and afternoon (your GP should have suggested it)

Icannoteven · 12/03/2023 22:22

I usually wake up some time between 4am and 6pm to pee so I take the thyroid meds then go back to sleep. I can then have as coffee around 7.15 when I get up.

If I don’t wake up to pee then unfortunately I have to just take the levithyroxine at 7.15 and distract myself with a shower until about 45 mins later when I have a coffee.

I take everything else (Sertraline, vit d, ferrous fumerate and thyroid support supplement) at night.

If I’m on antibiotics (which I have been frequently for the last two years - constant uti’x and dental issues) then it gets a bit complicated!

homestlg, I wish someone would jnvff Ed my some sort of thyroid medicine implant so we didn’t have to worry about this!

Terrifiedofwastingmylife · 12/03/2023 22:25

My thyroid medication is natural dessicated thyroid, Armour. Does that make a difference in terms of iron interaction?

Could ask on the community forum here

Terrifiedofwastingmylife · 12/03/2023 22:26

5000 iu.

Could you switch to a higher dose once a week one?

Rebel2 · 12/03/2023 22:29

I take (sorry easier to list all!)

First thing
Antihistamines, citalopram

Lunch time
Multi vitamins, vitamin D, turmeric, joint supplement all after my lunch at work (they sit on my desk so I remember!)

Last thing
Thyroxine, dihydrocodeine

Rebel2 · 12/03/2023 22:30

On and you can get higher dose vitamin D, I was on 20,000 once a week which was easy to fit in

ThereIbledit · 12/03/2023 22:33

Honestly, I take my many, many vitamin and herbal supplements (not medication) in a handful once a day, whenever I remember, because that's the best I can do.

I was taking 4,000iU Vit D when I was found to be deficient - so the GP's prescribed 1,000 wasn't going to do much! They then put me on 25,000 once a week for 6 weeks and that was a massive help.

Does boots or somewhere like that do Vit B injections? I might look up, as my vit B complex tablet is huge and a PITA to swallow...

maddening · 12/03/2023 22:35

If you don't have caffeine after 5 then surely that is your time for iron?

Boriswentcamping · 12/03/2023 22:41

I think you might want to avoid taking iron just before lying down. I read you should take it at least an hour before going to bed. Something to do with making sure it is properly in your stomach as it can can cause reflux and irritate the tissues if it comes back up? I don't really remember exactly.

Thyroxine 6am
Coffee 7am
Ferrous sulphate 11am (alternate days)
Lunch and vit d 12pm
Calcium with evening meal 5pm

Getting on top of the low ferretin was a game changer for me.

Boriswentcamping · 12/03/2023 22:42

After my morning coffee I switch to decaf tea... and avoid caffeine for the rest of the day.

evemillbank · 12/03/2023 22:45

I've been on it all my life. I take no notice of whether I've just had coffee or not.

ChopSuey2 · 12/03/2023 22:49

Thyroxine and vitamin D (along with other meds) about 15 minutes before tea. My endocrinologist really didn't seem concerned. She said it would be better to take vitamin D separately but it was more important I actually take it and doing all my meds together first thing is the only way that works.

humpty74 · 12/03/2023 22:49

Terrifiedofwastingmylife · 12/03/2023 22:25

My thyroid medication is natural dessicated thyroid, Armour. Does that make a difference in terms of iron interaction?

Sorry if this adds complication but you should be splitting your armour into 2 doses, t3 is short lived so taking it all at once in the morning it will wear off by the afternoon (the t4 effect will still work, so it depends how well you convert the t4 into t3), but that may be part of why you're getting tired?

I take half mine when I wake up then the other half when I remember anytime between 3pm and bedtime...

Rewind20Years · 12/03/2023 22:52

I take Vitamin D, Folate, Iron and Thyroid meds

Didnt know any of those rules…
I take them all together with coffee and breakfast 🙈

Iv been doing this years and all my levels are now stable 🤷🏻‍♀️🙈

humpty74 · 12/03/2023 22:53

I try not to eat or have a coffee or tea straight after but honestly I've never noticed a huge difference and i sometimes wash it down with tea 🤣 so, for me anyway, I don't think it affects the t3 absorption. T4 is much slower acting and cumulative so it won't make much difference if you drink tea or coffee close to it on one day as long as you do it "right" most days as far as I understand.

2Rebecca · 12/03/2023 22:57

Its more important to take the tablets than have a complex schedule where you may forget them.
