I'm almost in tears (of frustration, not sadness) trying to figure out how i can take thyroid medication and all my supplements. And still have coffee and tea in the mornings and afternoons?

My head is so fucking foggy. I have low ferritin, folate and B12 and borderline vit D.

I take my thyroid meds first thing, so 6am on a work day, and then drink my first cup of coffee half an hour later.

I just take the vitamin D after dinner as supposed to be taken with some form of dietary fat, and so far so good it seems to be lifting my levels at a modest pace.

Think I will start injecting the B12 as one less thing to worry about?

But where can I fit in the folate, and then some sort of iron to raise my ferritin? Can't remember (aforementioned foggy brain) all the rules but pretty sure these are best taken on empty stomach - but not within 4 hours of thyroid medication?

Then Jesus Christ I know some people will just suggest giving up coffee and tea but I'm just not able to do this. Hot drinks that taste nice are so comforting to me. I mainly stick to herbal teas after 5pm but earlier in the day I need plenty of tea, obviously I'm going to have to change it up a bit but dread more restrictions.

What is your schedule if you are low in these and supplementing?

I take my levothyroxine at 10pm as it was interfering too much with mornings. I don't tend to eat past 6pm. Take everything else on a morning.

Rewind20Years · 12/03/2023 22:58

I take Iron, , Thyroid, Vitamin D and Folate all at the same time

I take meds 6 times a day with these all together so if i had to separate these too i would be taking meds 9 or 10 times a day. Its impossible
I take meds for my heart and my kidneys as well to name just afew

Emsb2022 · 12/03/2023 23:09

My thyroxine med box actually says on the label to not eat ot drink until 30 minutes after taking it. Some people say it is better absorbed at bed time, I'm scared I will forget to take it, so stick to the morning.

StripeyDeckchair · 12/03/2023 23:09

Thyroid & other meds at 6am with breakfast
Don't know why the worry about tea/coffee etc, I'm permanently tired, have been worse but can't remember when I last woke up with energy don't think anything makes any difference

Rummikub · 13/03/2023 00:37

It affects absorption.

I did ask my thyroid consultant about mornings or evenings. He came back to me and said mornings Whereas a colleague in a different health authority had been told evenings!

Very few pharmacists mention when to take what. I think I was told by the hospital.

Rewind20Years · 13/03/2023 00:47

Whenever im a in patient in hospital

They give me all my ‘11 day pills’ together in the morning, when at home i take them in intervals

I then have to work out what can go with what and what cant

Rewind20Years · 13/03/2023 00:48

The same as ‘night’ pills

All at the same time
When some are for the evening ☝🏻

Rummikub · 13/03/2023 00:49

When I was in hospital they were meticulous about timings - even waking me up to
tkae my dose. It was v annoying!

Rummikub · 13/03/2023 00:49

This was interesting.

I drink tea and coffee all day long and take these meds whenever I remember

My thyroid levels have been stable for 20 years. I can’t speak for my vitamin levels but I tend to think life is too short to obsess about perfect schedules. The vitamins I take are way over daily recommended levels anyway.

Oh, thank god 😅 Me too! By the time I got your post, I was all I AM DOING IT WRONG AND NOBODY TOLD ME, bracing myself for a tedious thrilling several hours reading conflicting advice on the interwebs.

As you were. Phew, thanks AF!

GarlicGrace · 13/03/2023 00:57

Oh, and my doc does full bloods twice a year - vitamin levels are, quote, "beautiful". Despite my caffeine-infused cells and crappy timing.

CinnamonSodaPop · 13/03/2023 02:06

I take my thyroid meds on a morning and I have decaff coffee. On a night I take vit D, B12, Iron and Vit C. As long as I'm consistent with the vits it all seems to work fine.

BananaCocktails · 13/03/2023 02:23

Iron only works if your stomach is completely empty otherwise it doesn’t absorb into your bloodstream- it also needs vitamin C alongside it to absorb
I take my iron first thing with a kiwi fruit which is full of vitamin C, or with a glass of orange juice
i wait half hour then have breakfast tea coffee ect

or I’ll take it at night at least an hour after food just before bed

do you have to take thyroid medication on an empty stomach? If so, either first thing in the morning or last thing at night, the rest of the medication you can take after dinner. Don’t worry about the vitamin K just take it as part of a multivitamin

steff13 · 13/03/2023 03:19

I take my thyroid meds first thing in the morning, and wait an hour to eat or drink coffee. I really my iron later on in the day. The prescription bottle for the thyroid medicine says take it on an empty stomach, and not to take it with coffee, dairy, iron supplements, etc.

earlydoors42 · 13/03/2023 06:06

I at some point forgot you were meant to have 4 hours between thyroxene and iron. I often take iron 30-60 mins after, at high dose (with vitamin C). Just had my annual thyroid bloods and they were very similar to a year ago which was on the same dose but no iron.

Heatherjayne1972 · 13/03/2023 06:13

Ive been on thyroxine 25 years and literally never heard of this - no doctor has ever said anything about a regime
I just take it when i remember and drink tea coffee etc as and when
nothing bad has ever happened unless I forget to take it

BMrs · 13/03/2023 07:02

Levothyroxine first this, I keep this in my bathroom and take before i wash my face. First coffee and breakfast around 45/1 hour later.
I take ferrous fumerate for ferritin right before bed. Was hi I g me stomach bloating g so I take with high strength vit c to help absorb and is much better. Take all other supplements inc vit d at the same time

BMrs · 13/03/2023 07:04

Terrifiedofwastingmylife · 12/03/2023 21:31

So would it be ok to take the folate and iron at various times in the evening - what about last thing at night, two hours after having dinner?

Does anyone think herbal teas (without caffeine, ginger or valerian or something) would mess up absorption if I drank a cup just before bed and then took folate and an iron supplement?

I can make it work if I can just get into a routine of taking them late at night.

I take mine right before sleep and drink a decaf tea around 8pm. Works fine for me and my ferritin has increased. I'm on 210mg ferrous fumerate plus high strength vit c to help absorb

boredsolicitor · 13/03/2023 07:33

Can I ask if the iron is prescribed or just recommended?
I take thyroxine and vit d but so many of you take iron or ferritin as well . My hair is awful so I wonder if that may help me. Also is ferritin the same as iron ?

CrunchyCarrot · 13/03/2023 07:47

I take T3 rather than T4, which gives me more flexibiity, but still it's been difficult fitting in all my supplements and I often forget one or another!

Around 2 a.m. when I naturally wake I take my first dose of T3, and go back to sleep. After waking I take my iron tablet, then at lunch time I take B2 and Boron pills. At around 2 p.m. I take my second T3 dose. Then at dinner time I take Magnesium, B2 and Vit E. Both B12 and D I take as transdermal oil at bedtime.

CrunchyCarrot · 13/03/2023 07:48

Sort of. Ferritin is the storage form of iron, which means it's iron attached to a large carrier molecule. It can be released as the body needs.

How did you get thyronine? I was on it initially but got switched to thyroxine which I don’t like. When I ask my consultant he says it’s really expensive £1000?!

CertainUncertain · 13/03/2023 07:59

I also split my Armour dose between first thing in the morning and some time later in the afternoon and generally take D&K, circumin, a probiotic with supper, I don't need iron, so can't advise on that.

If you're struggling, I'd definitely suggest splitting the Armour dose, but maybe consider that you might also need a bit of levo in there? After a lot of experimentation, my endocrinologist added 25 mcg of thyroxine at bedtime and that plus the Armour turned out to be the perfect combo for me.

Wombats23 · 13/03/2023 08:00

I take thyroxine when I wake up, wait an hour before drinking tea.

Iron every other day. There was a very helpful thread about dose, which I was grateful for as 3x a day made me quite unhappy.

Statin & hrt at night.

I self-source it. Couldn't get it otherwise, thyroxine just doesn't do enough for me. It shouldn't be expensive. There's a whole scandal behind that! The price has come down somewhat but it is pretty difficult to get it prescribed.
