Queuing at the car park in town to park on a Saturday (well over an hour at Christmas) to go shopping
GPs doing home visits
Surgery open Christmas morning
School berets
School tunics (secondary school)
Plus adders for adding up the days' takings

For all us older teachers out there: the dreaded Banda?/bander?/can’t remember how it’s spelled machine. I’m left handed and hated that thing with a passion. Also, having to write on a proper blackboard with chalk, again not easy for a lefty!

This thing right?

My mum was a teacher, she used to bring the blank master sheets home to type up and draw the diagrams on, I would help to proofread and correct errors with the bright pink correcting fluid (what was it?) and the little brush.

And of course in school I experienced the "other side" i.e. the handouts and exam papers produced by the machines.

Going on my round the world backpacking trip and phoning home every 2 weeks and my mum sending letters to the next general post office of whatever country and city I was visiting next.

Having one telephone in the house.
My dad going crazy when I was talking to my best friend on the phone for more than 5 minutes as it cost a fortune apparently.
Writing and receiving letters.
Having penpals from all over the world when I was in my early teens.
Recording the top 40 with a cassette player.
Taking photos and getting the film developed.

Roller blackboards.

JunkinDonuts · 21/03/2023 14:15

Your mum dragging the twin tub washing machine out to do the laundry.
Not having a phone of any description, landline or mobile.
The irritation when the stylus slid across your record because it was full of fluff, or worse still, it breaking!
Your dad moaning about the band's on TOTP. ' call that music? It's a bloody racket! ' but was strangely quiet when pans people / legs & co were prancing across the screen 😂

JunkinDonuts · 21/03/2023 14:19

@Failingatthemoment I remember saverstrips, you got the 7th journey I think it was, free.
I had a metrocard. I think it was something like £2.50 per week for unlimited journeys within your region on the bus.

Great thread.
Proper old fashioned spindly looking mongrels. Like the ones in LS Lowry paintings.
A much quieter world

As a little kid I used to sometimes stay with my nan in Fulham in the '70s and once she took me to the public baths in Northend Road.

Her terraced house (in what is now a trendy area, renovated and worth nearly a million) had no bathroom and only an outside loo. No washing machine either.

I remember her taking me to have a bath and not knowing wtf to expect. I was about 8ish, i think. It was LOVELY! Basically you took your towel and soap, you paid and went in to your own little room with a mahoosive deep bath in it and big old chrome taps, smooth slatted wooden bath mat, and as much piping hot water as you wanted and you had a lovely bath! It was spotlessly clean and the whole place was steamy and hot and smelled of soap. Beautiful tiles on the walls.

It's a weird memory but a nice one!

Travellers Cheques
You had to sign them in front of a bank
cashier in the Uk.
Then sign them again in the bank or wherever you were on holiday.
It was a bit of a faff

2catsandhappy · 29/06/2023 07:53

Spending a penny.
Literally, in a public ladies loo, putting a penny in a brass door lock to open the cubicle door.
Also spending a half pence piece.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/06/2023 08:00

The milkman coming with a horse.
I’m fairly ancient but even so it was only until I was about 6. Dds found this the most hilarious thing ever when I told them ages ago.

Taking/sending off a film to be developed, the excitement of collecting/seeing your photos come through the door, and the disappointment of realising half of them were crap.

Anyotherdude · 29/06/2023 08:05

Eagerly sticking the Green Shield stamps into the savings book and dreaming of the extra-special birthday gift it was my turn to get (DM used to save these in order to give each of us DC a “decent” present each year in turn - there were 3 of us)
PG Tips cards - the excitement of completing a whole book
Special railway excursions to the seaside in the school holidays

Taking/sending off a film to be developed, the excitement of collecting/seeing your photos come through the door, and the disappointment of realising half of them were crap.

... and the even greater excitement of finding a mystery film in an old bag or suitcase and sending it off to get pictures you'd completely forgotten about from your holiday six years ago.
