Yes must be French skipping no wonder we were all like rakes back then and that was on top of a long walk to and from school and then out and about in the evenings

Gingerkittykat · 10/03/2023 17:07

A smoking room in the maternity ward, my niece was born in 1995 and it was there and when I had my DD in 1996 it was gone.

The level of freedom, I was allowed to take a bus up the town and go swimming with my friends alone at the age of 9. I remember going for miles on my bike at the age of 12 but there is far too much traffic for that now.

Gingerkittykat · 10/03/2023 17:10

I forgot, kicking the back of the phonebox before you hung up to get your 10p back!

Playing elastics in the playground

Loved elastics, I can remember sitting knotting the coloured bands together. Thank you for reminding me

the80sweregreat · 10/03/2023 21:53

I also loved Bamboozle too! I miss teletext

We just used cheap plain white knicker elastic - it was the 70s and mums often had big rolls of it for fixing the big navy blue knickers that we all seemed to have.

Smokey sweaty nightclubs.

schnubbins · 10/03/2023 22:21

Going to confession and comparing your penance afterwards with everyone else .More sins = more prayers and actually believing that my soul was no longer black with sin because I had confessed .

bizzywiththefizzy · 10/03/2023 22:22

Does anyone remember Scraps ? They came in packets , with beautiful pictures sometimes even had glitter on them . Really cute ones with angels on them or babies . We used to keep them in books and swap doubles .
I wonder what happened to mine . You never see them anymore .

Sorry about my duplicated responses, I'm blaming my phone for glitching 🙄

Getting the old wheel weights from the tyre shop to melt the lead down and cast into model soldiers.

Twilight7777 · 10/03/2023 23:24

Hearing the dial up noise connecting to the internet (I swear I hear it in my nightmares 😆)

lobeydosser · 11/03/2023 00:50

Booking flights not by tapping a few buttons on your phone but via a bucket shop' (call centre travel agency) You'd find their numbers in the small ads at the back of the paper. You'd wait on the line to get through and then they'd explain to you very patiently just what they had.
Booking self catering accommodation also through the small ads in the paper or Private Eye or even The Lady! No carefully curated dozens of pics, no painstakingly crafted descriptions. Just a few lines basic description and an approximate location until that glorious day when the thick brown envelope arrived with the full address and a photocopied map!

piperatthegates · 11/03/2023 11:43

I believe the Broadmoor siren is still a thing, I have a friend who lives nearby and who's DC goes to the school near the hospital. There is still a protocol if the siren goes off.

Countdown2023 · 11/03/2023 11:50

The joy of a proper ‘snow day’ with no on-line learning

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/03/2023 11:51

On a related note, that civil defence siren that they still test every first Wednesday of the month in France always catches me by surprise and terrifies me.

Piglet89 · 11/03/2023 11:52

The “Bing bing shhhhhhhhhhhhh” noise of dial-up internet.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/03/2023 11:59

Or the cry of "get off the internet I want to use the phone!"

In my first post uni house in 2000 I had the attic room, three floors up from the telephone socket. Everytime I wanted to go online I had to unfurl a massively long ethernet cable down the stairs, unplug the shared landline phone and plug the cable in to the BT socket.

I used to save up all my online activity to an hour or so on a quiet Sunday.

Feels prehistoric now.

piperatthegates · 11/03/2023 12:15

Don't think anyone has mentioned that before it was common to have a home computer or game console. Video game machines in the pub. We spent hours (and loads of money) playing Space Invaders, Galaxian and Breakout

Trying to find friends you've lost at a music festival without a phone

Not being able to look up just look up the name of That Actor In That Film

Holiday brochures

Music in physical format

i remember walking to the travel agents to book theatre, concert and railway tickets.
they would show a seating plan for the venue, phone it, and write out the ticket by hand.
similar for railways, but consult bradshaws or equivalent for the services.
the alternative was going up town to the box/booking office.
which was a waste of a journey before the event/departure.
