Is the Future Female?

SleepingStandingUp · 06/03/2023 09:59

Looking at the International Women's merchant in our local supermarket, all emblazoned with THE FUTURE IS FEMALE and wondering what message that would send my sons and nephews or my mainly male Beavers?

Does it not matter cos they'll just grow into men and therefore their male privilege overwrites their feelings?

Is it better this way, that they know most women would prefer them to become obsolete?
Or is it just lazy marketing and I'm not the only one who wouldn't touch something that pushes for a lack of equality the other way?

Yabu- the future IS female
Yanbu- the future should be equality

You are being totally disingenuous, and your sons are probably being brought up to feel entitled and superior.

BourbonBon · 06/03/2023 10:01

I hate this shit. In order to promote women’s rights we’re now shitting boys and men.

No the future is not female, it’s equality

Why, because they’re being told that they matter as much as women?

KatyKlanger · 06/03/2023 10:05

There are a lot of people whose very good salaries rely on women and/or other groups being oppressed - so they will always claim that to be the case and they will keep stirring the pot. Telling us all how sexist or racist or whatever we are. Tedious really.

whatadayforadaydream · 06/03/2023 10:05

Urgh, so you can't say anything positive or encouraing about women or girls without offending the poor boys? Come off it? We are looking at, literally, decades before women will have equality. Your son's will benefit from thei inequality for many many years to come. They will be alright.

Incidentally, I am raising my son to learn that women are great, powerful and equal. That doesn't take anything away from him, as a boy, but hopefully will mean the will be part of a future where women are treated equally.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 06/03/2023 10:29

i'm not voting because that's a stupid choice given your wording. Stupid.

The world is 50/50 by gender yet ruled and controlled mainly by men. Your male relatives will be just fine.
Big upp-ing women and girls on IWD is NOT a threat to them.

I would vote for 'equality' all day long but we are Sooooooooooo far from equality for women/men I refuse to vote on your interpretation of it here.

Oh, and it's in November before you ask. IMD that is. Fucks Sake.

All day long this bullshit. Everyday sexism is bad enough from men, but it really p's me off when women do it too.

BeetleyCarapace · 06/03/2023 10:35

It's quite a comprehension reach to see THE FUTURE IS FEMALE and see it as an existential threat to your 'male beaver'.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I don't see slogans about empowering black woman as a slight on me not being a black woman. As tough as my upbringing and frankly life has been, I still retain the basic privilege afforded to being white.

The more boys/men who can see the same, that no matter their upbringing they'll have basic privilege over women just by the virtue of being born with a penis the better. That's where equity and true equality lives.

Because I don't think the future is female, my 3 yo is entitled?

lifeturnsonadime · 06/03/2023 10:52

Oh my goodness OP.

The only thing I have seen so far about IWD is the Hershey Bar Celebration of womanhood which featured a male!

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11813169/Hersheys-faces-boycott-putting-trans-woman-wrappers-International-Womens-Day.html

Women's rights has a long way to go before men will suffer harm at the moment we have males being celebrated on women's day, males competing in female sports categories, anyone remember when Caitln Jenner was woman of the year?

I really don't think you need to worry.

It's in my Asda now, I didn't stock the shelves 🤔

How is it sexist against women to think the future isn't female?

But is saying the future is Female empowering or as a pp rightly posted, patronising tat?

I'd take the FUTURE IS YOURS or similar, under the IWD banner and in the purple flowery style of the cups. That's empowering.

What a on the shelf isn't.

I agree with you. What would be even better for women is equity (a nudge up for women) to reach same highs as male peers 😛

Whats even worse is that 51% of the planet is female and we are still accepting & enabling this. I ask myself why a lot x

So equal not the "future" which suggests as a male he has no role.

Precisely

Trust me, my carers allowance doesn't rely on oppressing anyone.

Maybe not, but many do...

I can't answer your AIBU as yet again the options given are written to purposely skew the vote certain ways.

I have 2 young boys and I don't think this will oppress them in any way, shape or form. Put it this way, my DP is scared we'll have a girl if we ever have a third child. Not because he doesn't want a girl, we'd both be happy with either, but because my laidback DP who struggles to worry about anything would be terrified of what may happen to her given the rise in murders, assaults, rapes... need I go on? We were actually just discussing how it's lucky in a way we no longer have a dog as when DP wasn't at home, I wouldn't feel safe walking her in the dark since we can't even trust the police anymore.

So no, a bag with a slogan bigging up women does not make me think my boys will suffer or feel inadequate, we're so far from equality they'll very likely be much safer and much less in danger of sexual assault/catcalling/everyday sexism than I am now. In addition, the clothing I see in the shops for them that says "future rocket scientist" and "super hero" as opposed to "pretty princess" and "future fashionista" for little girls further reinforces that they're expected to go on to bigger and better things than little girls. It's horrendous.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 06/03/2023 11:03

I don't think my son is going to be threatened by a cup that says 'future is female' - I'll go buy him one of those tshirts in the boys section that says ' Nasa' or 'heartbreaker' or ' i love mud' etc to make him feel more secure in his masculinity...

Tbf I'm not talking on a national or international level, but on a more personal level. I want my sons and my nieces to be aiming for equity /equality, not this Constantine pitting against each other over who is best.
The future is female doesn't do that.

But obv I'm not a real woman who cares about being female, I'm just a sycophant at the alter of penis for thinking putting one over the other isn't equity or equality

OP posts:
5128gap · 06/03/2023 11:06

I'd you're concerned that your sons will be unable to succeed in a future scenario where the playing field is levelled for women, then you need to start helping them develop their skill sets so they can succeed on their merit rather than their sex.
In reality I think you've little to fear as we're still a long way from true equality of opportunity, and your boys will no doubt be able to ride their privilege well into old age.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/03/2023 11:07

Not sure how my post is about thinking my boys are inferior to girls buy hey yo.

I'd just like them and my nieces to want equality, not to think one has to be over the other.

'Gone back to take a photo as a pp thought I was lying'

You what now? You'd be better off helping your son/s/ beavers develop skills that will help them succeed in the world, and telling them that they're going to be threatened by women isn't the best start...
