Is the Future Female?

Looking at the International Women's merchant in our local supermarket, all emblazoned with THE FUTURE IS FEMALE and wondering what message that would send my sons and nephews or my mainly male Beavers?

Does it not matter cos they'll just grow into men and therefore their male privilege overwrites their feelings?

Is it better this way, that they know most women would prefer them to become obsolete?
Or is it just lazy marketing and I'm not the only one who wouldn't touch something that pushes for a lack of equality the other way?

Yabu- the future IS female
Yanbu- the future should be equality

That image is very powerful and very sobering.

We already have women & girls in this country who are opting out of public places because we are losing 'single sex' spaces.

We are already having girls protesting at school because they have lost female only toilets, have we really got to the point that a girl who is on her period doesn't feel comfortable to go to school?

We have males in women's sporting competitions.

Male rapists in women's prisons.

Males taking positions reserved for women at the head of a woman's rape crisis centre.

Women's rights are going backwards.

I bloody hope so. The male present (meaning the last few thousand years) is not so peachy, is it?

SleepingStandingUp · 06/03/2023 16:06

The picture is also fairly depressing. 'The Future is Female', as long as it's pink and his glitter on it. and all the hands have pretty painted nails on the bags and key chains.

Mae up your mind who you feel sorry for. The women and girls being sterotyped or your poor sons who may have marginally less automatic privilege based on their gender.

'You're suggesting I should give up custody of my nieces because I don't like FEMALES ARE THE FUTURE?
I mean I don't actually have custody of them' @SleepingStandingUp

Give up custody of my nieces, How DARE you!
Actually I don't have custody...

These comments really are getting bizarre. No, by all means definitely don't give up custody of children you don't have custody of! That's what feminists want you to do not to do to do. They're sneaky that way. That's how they plan to destroy all of menz with their slogans on cheap tat, and their giving up of things that aren't a thing.

You're the one that told me to do them a favour and let someone else raise them, you seemed to think I had parental responsibility for them and if so I should stop raising them, and be as far fro them as possible. Curious if I'm safe around my boys or would you like to give SS a call?

if the tat said 'the Future is male' it'd be far more accurate.

And holy shit the outcry and backlash would be swift and brutal. Not because it is untrue, but because it is unpopular.

While it may make some people feel good to belong to a tribe, the rampant tribalism coupled with a zero-sum worldview, and truth determined by pop culture buzzwords and soundbites, makes broader meaningful discussion of difficult topics nigh on impossible.

raspberrywine · 06/03/2023 16:57

That's the most positive statement I've seen on any merchandise around IWD. It brought a smile to my face. There are plenty of other IWD shenanigans which don't centre women and women only.

Randomhead · 06/03/2023 17:07

I’m not sure op is very critical thinking…she’s not understanding the debate and resorting to ridiculous comments like ‘do you want to call social services’ instead.

engage with the topic you posted about

Well, it's not a SS issue of course. But it's slightly depressing to see a woman raising the next generation of men who think women's equality is a threat to them.

But it isn't advocating women's equality. Quote me one post where I said women shouldn't be equal, I like it here sat at my husbands feet, basking in the manly glow of his superiority?

If you think women should be equal why do you feel so threatened by something advocating their role in the future?

If the future is female means equality then presumably you're OK with the "future is male" merchandise?

oh good, we are getting circular. See previous comment on this exact point.

You know that saying "The devil's in the detail".....

And you know that enslavement to the devil is a choice.....

Here we all are bickering over a slogan while the world goes to hell in a handcart....

What a time to be alive.....

Yabu- the future IS female

It's kind of a sexist slogan. I thought we wanted equality? Now we want to dominate? Not really interested in that version of "feminism". Even talking about this in this way, "men being obsolete" is cringe.

It's sad what's happening to young boys these days. Being told they're toxic and privileged before they've even done anything. It's not gonna turn out well. They're going to grow up more resentful of women, not less.

I have a son and a daughter. I teach them both to treat people with respect and kindness, to respect people of the other gender, to work hard and not make excuses for their shortcomings. My kids know that if they fail at something it's because they didn't work hard enough, not because of some external factor (eg someone else's supposed privilege) held them back.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/03/2023 18:09

Oh I do despair sometimes. OP are you offended by other slogans on girls clothes such as 'be kind' ? Can you see from this article how boys clothes are already empowering and girls are not?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60290232

One positive message in support of IWD and we've got posters on this thread moaning about women wanting everything or women wanting more than equality. I mean as if that would ever happen?

I have one of each sex too. I parent them the same. I know that it is likely that my son will have more opportunities and fairer pay than my daughter, this is not because of my parenting but because of the society we live in. This is 2023, it shouldn't be this way.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 06/03/2023 18:09

'The picture is also fairly depressing. 'The Future is Female', as long as it's pink and his glitter on it. and all the hands have pretty painted nails on the bags and key chains.'

Make your mind up - one minute you're hand wringing over men rights and the future of boys unnecessarily and the next you're some kind of feminist objecting t0 pink and glitter?

You can't have it both ways.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 06/03/2023 18:10

'If the future is female means equality then presumably you're OK with the "future is male" merchandise?'

At least that would be accurate, and honest.

knittingaddict · 06/03/2023 18:10

The future is female?

I think we are a long, long way from that being true, unfortunately.

Notimeforaname · 06/03/2023 18:13

I fuckin hope the future isn't 'female'. We need men as much as we need women.

Notimeforaname · 06/03/2023 18:14

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom sums up everything I wanted to say.

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/03/2023 18:22

I agree. Ill thought through, at best, not helpful and probably damaging to boys. It’s not going to help those young men who see their female peers do better in school, uni, etc feel better about being male, even though I agree that young females need empowerment. The wording implicitly sets up a competitive dynamic between the sexes and I strongly believe that what is required is promotion of understanding and equality. Removing barriers to success of either sexes should not be seen as coming at the cost of the success of the others.

But the point you are missing here is that the female peers who do better at school still end up getting paid less when they go to work and facing massive structural disadvantages.

People bleating on about how they feel sorry for poor disadvantaged boys are not factoring in these massive disadvantages.

If it were a level playing field you comments might have some validity but it’s really not anywhere close.

In any case ad a PP pointed out: why should boys feel threatened by girls being given a hand out? I’m a white woman and I am perfectly happy with the idea that black women usually face greater disadvantages than I do am happy for advantages to be placed in their way because they haven’t had as many. I don’t understand why this idea is so threatening?

You really don’t understand the first thing about sexism or misogyny do you?
