A pint of Beer after the School Run 😱😱😱!

Is the School Run really that stressful that people need a pint of Beer afterwards? Just read this extract from a book in a magazine...

For the Duke of Edinburgh, part of the trip was invariably spent listening to Charles’s anguished pleas to be transferred out of Gordonstoun—followed by Philip’s oft-repeated defense of the school and his rationale for sticking it out. As soon as he returned to London, Philip, pale and shaking, would down a pint of Boddingtons—the Duke’s favorite brand of beer—to calm his nerves.

Isn't that school in Scotland?

A pint after a 500mile trip is a bit different to walking the kids down the road...

Ayeitsme · 20/02/2023 14:11

London to Scotland to London again would be a hell of a school run.

But yes, in answer to your question, I've had school runs where I've needed a wine after. I tried to just stick to the afternoon ones though.

Norriscolesbag · 20/02/2023 14:11

That’s not a normal school run though is it?

GoodChat · 20/02/2023 14:11

Yeah if he's driven 500 miles listening to his son being upset about being taken to school I can see why he'd fancy a pint afterwards.

PlusLaMeme · 20/02/2023 14:13

That's not a regular school run? It was after dropping his son off at boarding school, or one of the residency weekends that boarding schools run where family visit the boarders.

hazelnutlatte · 20/02/2023 14:14

Well I suppose that is technically a school run - so in answer to the op's question - If I had just driven across the country to leave my dc at a school they hated then I would need lots of alcohol.

Title: Is it normal to want a drink after a little walk to drop something off?

Content: So this guys I know Frodo had to deliver a ring....

Plumbear2 · 20/02/2023 14:16

Charles was badly bullied in that school which was why he wanted to leave. Then the duke had to leave him there and travel home 500 miles. I guess he did want a drink. I also wouldn't have made him stay at that school but then I wasn't the duke.

Ding ding! We have a winner…

A school run that he only did a few times a year that ran for over hundreds of miles?

What on earth is wrong with having a drink after a 5 + hour argument?!

Pixiedust1234 · 20/02/2023 14:18

Well...most kids crying and whinging about not want to go to school would send most parents to drink. Add in the milage factor and the fact he was trapped for hours...I'm surprised the DoE didn't emigrate.

MaggieFS · 20/02/2023 14:20

It's next to RAF Lossiemouth, surely they would have flown?

immergeradeaus · 20/02/2023 14:20

It's a 200 mile round trip to dc's school. I admit that on a number of occasions I've stopped at a motorway service station and had:

a milkshake.

Is it normal to have a milkshake every time you so the school run 😱😱😱

No

Not much compassion for poor Charles

Agree.

Anyway, first thing I do after the evening school run is pour a glass of wine. TBF my round trip to school and then home takes about 75-90 minutes of driving.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 20/02/2023 15:04

I don't have kids...but did walk around the corner with my neighbour to "collect" her 2 once...it took an hour to walk an under 10min round trip. Shock
I needed a stiff drink after that experience.

PeekAtYou · 20/02/2023 15:06

I expect that a lot of parents who drop off their kids at uni might have a drink afterwards.

Redebs · 20/02/2023 15:09

Phillip knew it was a horrendous, abusive place that Charles was terrified of. Charles would cry and beg for hours not to go.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 20/02/2023 15:14

That’s a termly school run of about 500 miles each way.

It’s not Viv from school necking a vodka and coke at 9:10am after dropping off her DC at school round the corner

diddl · 20/02/2023 15:48

It's not as if he couldn't have taken PC out of the school if he'd wanted to though?

JPG21 · 20/02/2023 15:49

I'm surprised he stopped at the one Tbh. If I'd dropped my child off at a school that I knew he hated and was mercilessly bullied I'd drink the bar dry love 🤷

ArcaneWireless · 20/02/2023 15:52

The heads on the after school pints of the frothmeister generals on here could give you a beard like Santa Claus.

PurpleButterflyWings · 20/02/2023 16:01

Disgraceful necking beer in this manner.

SURELY it should be wine! Wine Grin

TheFretfulPorpentine · 20/02/2023 16:11

I haven't much sympathy. He could have either a) outsourced the task to one of his dozens of servants or b) sent his child to a school closer to home and maybe picked one which the child did not hate quite so much.

LlynTegid · 20/02/2023 16:20

I doubt if you could have got Boddington's in London in the late fifties/early sixties!!!
