A pint of Beer after the School Run 😱😱😱!

Is the School Run really that stressful that people need a pint of Beer afterwards? Just read this extract from a book in a magazine...

For the Duke of Edinburgh, part of the trip was invariably spent listening to Charles’s anguished pleas to be transferred out of Gordonstoun—followed by Philip’s oft-repeated defense of the school and his rationale for sticking it out. As soon as he returned to London, Philip, pale and shaking, would down a pint of Boddingtons—the Duke’s favorite brand of beer—to calm his nerves.

The idea of Philip ever being pale and shaking is quite something actually. He seemed very unruffled in public.

Phillip knew it was a horrendous, abusive place that Charles was terrified of. Charles would cry and beg for hours not to go.

I wish people on Harry bashing threads would acknowledge this. The level of utter dysfunction in that family is staggering. Who would knowing do that to a young child.

I haven't much sympathy. He could have either a) outsourced the task to one of his dozens of servants or b) sent his child to a school closer to home and maybe picked one which the child did not hate quite so much.

I wonder if he loved it so much he couldn't understand why others might not or why it might not suit them?

I think in later years KC has said that looking back it wasn't as bad as he thought?

Still he didn't send either of his boys there!

It probably would have suited Harry.

It's easy to understand why he wanted to be at Eton with William though.

Maverickess · 20/02/2023 16:58

It's hardly like he dropped him at the local junior school at 8.45am and nipped into 'Spoons on his way home for a pint and a fry up is it....... It's not really your average school run, London to Scotland once a term.

Though I think that may well have appealed to the DoE tbh 🤣

Rodneyisaplonker · 20/02/2023 17:00

I think you’re stretching it op by calling that trip the school run 😂

BertHandsome · 20/02/2023 17:01

A WHOLE pint?!? What a reprobate

It's next to RAF Lossiemouth, surely they would have flown?

Then he'd probably have had the beer on the plane - it's about a 90 minute flight.

At that age, Charlie Boy would probably have had a cherry brandy

I agree. Philip sent Charles there to "toughen him up". Charles crying would have probably made Philip more determined that he should stay there.

Cripes. Now I am craving a pint and a fry up from Spoons.

I doubt if you could have got Boddington's in London in the late fifties/early sixties!!!

I’m fairly sure Philip could have done, they were about 60 - 70 years old by then. Boddy is one of the oldest ales in the uk.

Addymontgomeryfan · 20/02/2023 17:12

I would definitely need a pint if my school run was London to Scotland

GretnaGreenIsLovely · 20/02/2023 17:25

Well, I think there is context and time to consider in Philips decision, plus his own experiences. He may well have thought, as was common for certain men of the time, that bullying and a tough environment would 'toughen up' the sensitive Charles. I don't agree with this way of thinking and wouldn't send my children to boarding school, especially if they hated it. But I'm sure Charles was sent for good reasons and it must have been hard for Philip to have seen him distressed. He probably thought 'its for his own good', and maybe the beer helped a bit.

We all make mistakes as parents. I've made a few! Pretty sure the first day I dropped my crying baby off at nursery I shot home and downed a large glass of wine. Should I have left him? Who knows. Did I do it because I thought it was the best decision at the time? Yes. Did I need that wine? He'll yeah!! 🍷

DonnaBanana · 20/02/2023 17:36

Who cares. Even if a normal parent had a pint after the school run, as long as they weren't an alcoholic and kept it to that, it wouldn't matter one jot. Plenty of people knock back a glass of wine or two in the evening, so I don't see the problem if beer is what you prefer.

Rodneyisaplonker · 20/02/2023 18:15

Still giggling at a 1200 mile round trip being classed as the school run and judging the Duke of Edinburgh for wanting a pint after.

😂

Then when he was 17 they sent him to Timber Top , a school in Australia which he seems to have actually enjoyed. On his return , his mother greeted him with a handshake.

They are a deeply weird family. Although the institution is bonkers I can't judge the individual members. Because why would I be any different in their shoes ?

HoodieBell · 20/02/2023 19:28

Should I show love and compassion for my son, or have a drink? I can't believe there are so many people that think these dysfunctional wasters are better than them.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 20/02/2023 19:32

My friend and I used to (occasionally) go to the local pub for a glass of wine/ cider before the school run!

NewlyDiabeticMum · 20/02/2023 19:40

I like a pint of Boddingtons.

kittensinthekitchen · 20/02/2023 20:30

Isn't that school in Scotland?

A pint after a 500mile trip is a bit different to walking the kids down the road...

Imagine he had walked. And then needed to do the whole thing over again. I Think he’d have fallen down at the door tbh.

To be fair though, Charles did later say he was ‘astounded ‘ at ‘the amount of rot’ written about his time at Gordonstoun.

he did say the people were foul and that he got hit over the head a lot at night as he snored, and as he wasn’t athletic he hated the early morning runs, cold showers, felt the beds were too hard and the dorms were cold. He also didn’t really make any friends, The main issue was he was very close to the queen mum and really really didn’t want to be sent away to school in Scotland in the first place.

it also has to be remembered that he had his body guards there with him, one of whom he was very close to and was like a father figure, so I think when Charles says a lot of it is Rot, I’d probably believe him.

It’s clear he didn’t enjoy it and thought it miserable, and in all likely hood compared to life at the palace it probably was, but he also struggled at his primary school and didn’t like that either and didn’t make friends there either.
