To think the Independent’s cartoon of Nicola Sturgeon is shameful, misogynistic and dangerous

Just saw horrible cartoon from the Independent with decapitated Nicola sturgeon playing the bagpipes. In the light of death threats to female politicians (including Nicola) I don’t know how this kind of inflammatory media is allowed. It’s really not funny.

I don't like her and yes that is too much

I haven't seen it and I'm no fan ,but that sounds awful.

It sounds like it's in bad taste and ill thought out but why is it misogynistic? They would have done similar for any departing male leader wouldn't they?

I’m Scottish, I’m not a fan of hers, and I think it’s really mean and not appropriate, however I also support the right to free press and I believe the intention was to draw comparisons to Wallace (ie Scottish freedom fighter who “died” for their cause) - she’s still standing wearing traditional Scots dress; she’s still fighting for her country from beyond her “political” grave.

I fail to see how it is at all misogynistic just because she happens to be a woman.

I haven’t seen it(nor the Nicola Sturgeon one) but I would be angry - on behalf of the cow.

Cows are sacred in the Hindu religion.

It is simply in poor taste and not particularly clever. I take it the yellow clad piper symbolises the SNP? I therefore don't see it as misogynistic as it portrays the SNP as decapitated, not Sturgeon.

Agree with the OP that the cartoon is wrong. Two MPs have been murdered in recent years. I did not like the comparison of Nicola Sturgeon to the character played by Janette Tough, this is far worse.

I think there is a different tone when talking about female politicians. Misogyny is undoubtedly a factor.

I don’t really see how it’s misogynistic . I think pointing to anything that some people might find offensive as misogynistic, if it happens to be a woman, gives weight to the ‘extreme feminism’ argument.

So it's alright to draw a misogynistic and culturally offensive cartoon of a female politician that you dislike. Having said that, I'm crying tears of joy over Sturgeon's demise. She's a right numpty and has done a number on the English media. She's done far more damage than Patel ever could.

Generally I'm more in favour of freedom to offend rather than against.

It doesn't look to me like a call to violence at all, let alone to violence against women and girls.

If Nicola Sturgeon herself finds this upsetting and offensive then I hope she has a good hard think about why she said nothing when SNP members recently stood in front of a placard calling for TERFS to be decapitated (this placard also had a guillotine on it for effect).

Why is it misogynistic? Its a political cartoon and she's a politician. If you say it invites violence against politicians, male mps have died as well. But it's just a political commentary. I don't find it funny but I hate the idea that everything has to be closed down because a few people are always looking for ways to be offended.
