To think the Independent’s cartoon of Nicola Sturgeon is shameful, misogynistic and dangerous

Just saw horrible cartoon from the Independent with decapitated Nicola sturgeon playing the bagpipes. In the light of death threats to female politicians (including Nicola) I don’t know how this kind of inflammatory media is allowed. It’s really not funny.

OP posts:

Hmm, I assumed it was a reference to William Wallace (aka Braveheart)- a rather tame one, if you consider that his beheading was the last of several tortures inflicted on him.

If I were a bovine I would be incensed to be compared to Patel

So whether it’s offensive depends on her politics. Very interesting.

They're both horrible to be honest.

I think Sturgeon has hurt Scotland badly but that cartoon is vile.

That’s off too tbh

Reminds me of caricature in French magazine which I can’t think of

MarshaMelrose · 17/02/2023 19:08

Charlie Hebdo?

lljkk · 17/02/2023 19:11

oh ffs, It's no worse than any cartoon would be for a male. It's not humorous to me but really it's just a concept. I like NS quite a bit by the way, if only she wasn't so into Scottish independence.

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2023 19:12

That’s it. I’m not keen on racial caricature

I realise I’ve just objected to three political cartoons in succession. I do think some are very good. I’d have to google to find ones I like.

MarshaMelrose · 17/02/2023 19:12

Politics is a tough game. And these politicians are at the peak. They've all enjoyed the power and influence they've had. And they equally have to accept criticism, even if it is offensive. These cartoons are just going to be taken in their stride. It wouldn't surprise ne if Borus actually collected them!
They have to have hides of rhinos and extraordinary self-confidence or they'd never be able to survive the pressure.

Sometimeswinning · 17/02/2023 19:13

Yeah I don't find it funny. But she's way more offensive and dangerous than a comic strip.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/02/2023 19:15

It's a political cartoon, theres a long history of those being pretty grotesque, shocking images - that's really rather the point.

Misogynistic though... no, or are we saying its fair game to cartoon the blokes but not the women?

Here's some others by the same cartoonist:

Does this, or this:

Mean the artist is anti-man? I don't think so.

If you simply don't like political cartoons... don't look at them. I don't want to live in a world were we can't express how we feel about certain people and their actions or ideas though, that to me is FAR worse than any distasteful or grotesque cartoon!

It is. The cartoon is more anti Britain than it is anti women, if anything. They are not literally suggesting she should be beheaded. Instead, she has politically been “murdered” by her quest for Scottish independence. Just like William Wallace. The yellow represents SNP, and their “death” as a party - since they were effectively a single cause party.

They have even attempted to take her gender out of the equation completely by dressing her in traditionally male clothing.

Anyone who believes this is anti women or inciting violence against her is taking this cartoon way too literally.

Pugdogmom · 17/02/2023 19:18

I don't care whether its Priti Patel , Nicola Sturgeon or whoever. That's in poor taste.

Charlie Hebdo?

What about it? Thought those cartoons were disgusting and racist as well

NotAnotherBathBomb · 17/02/2023 19:24

And I do think with the murders of Jo Cox and David Amess that the media does have a role to play in the way that it dehumanises politicians.

CherLloydbyCherLloyd · 17/02/2023 16:06

I’m Scottish, I’m not a fan of hers, and I think it’s really mean and not appropriate, however I also support the right to free press and I believe the intention was to draw comparisons to Wallace (ie Scottish freedom fighter who “died” for their cause) - she’s still standing wearing traditional Scots dress; she’s still fighting for her country from beyond her “political” grave.

I fail to see how it is at all misogynistic just because she happens to be a woman.

This actually sounds like it's very clever when explained. Political cartoons are meant to be offensive to male their point, probably free speech is the most important factor here. My immediate response was to agree with you OP, but I changed my mind when thinking about the context

Rainbowshit · 17/02/2023 19:26

I'm Scottish, cannot stand Sturgeon and I'm really dismayed at the cartoon. Too far.

Oh I missed that. Apologies

DulcetTones · 17/02/2023 19:26

Disgusting political cartoons aren't my cup of tea, but the immediate jump to "it's misogyny" every time someone says, writes or draws something negative about a specific woman, politician or otherwise, is tiresome. How will women in positions of power be taken seriously if all scrutiny is deemed misogynistic?

Given her betrayal of women, I can't care enough to wring my hands over this.

Political cartoons are almost always really clever, and can be enjoyed on many levels and interpreted in multiple ways. I do think free press is really, really important.

Sooo it’s ok for cartoons mocking boris but not Nicola?

I think it’s hilarious she’s a vile women and thank god she’s gone,

I don't remember seeing any violent ones with Boris Johnson?

Delighted Sturgeon has gone. Believe in free press. Is the cartoon incitement to violence?

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/02/2023 19:49

I'd say Boris as a butchered pig pretty violent...

Drowning...

Yep, no grotesque or violent ones about Boris...

MsCarriePooter · 17/02/2023 19:51

Poor Nicola....boo fucking hoo.
