If you can, share your technique.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm talking about one of these:

Take the top off and put it underneath. Then you have custard on the top and a double layer underneath. All the pleasure and none of the mess.

Oooh, game changer.

I eat the top layer, then lick out the custardy middle layer, and finish by eating the base.
I only ever eat them at home. On my own. Blush

You finish with plain pastry? What an animal.

It's why I love them so.

Lid off and flip - so that the icing is inside and pastry on the outside to avoid sticky fingers - and then dive in and enjoy. A bit of messy gooiness is part of the joy of a custard slice. They were my Dad's favourite treat and he taught me this way.

Sideways and open wide

My favourite position.

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/02/2023 10:49

The mess is all part of it. I love a custard slice.

WandaWonder · 17/02/2023 10:51

I stick in the fridge then eat

Genius idea! I love a cream slice have to buy one now to try it Betsy's way.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 17/02/2023 10:53

you eat a custard slice solo, or with an intimate acquaintance. then you can be a custardy mess and not worry about it.

YADNU OP!!!

watcherintherye · 17/02/2023 10:56

I put it on its side, slice it right down the middle lengthways, and hold the pastry to eat each half. I so want one now!

TheDogthatDug · 17/02/2023 10:58

Isn't making a mess part of the experience? It is for me anyway 😋

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 17/02/2023 10:58

I take the top part off and eat that bit first. Then nibble on the custard bit starting from one side to the other then once it's at a level where I can fit it in my mouth properly I then eat it as normal. I too really want a vanilla slice now. My Dad used to make the best ones ever!!

ehb102 · 17/02/2023 10:59

Turn it on its side, slice into small pieces with a seated knife, then eat. Got to keep the ratio of custard to icing.

SomeCommonThing · 17/02/2023 10:59

Moonlightsonatas · 17/02/2023 10:26

Eat the layers off separately, start from the bottom then you get the finish with the icing layer 😃

That's the most offensive comment I've ever read on this site. clutches pearls

Slice in half horizontally. Eat each half separately, saving the icing half until last of course.

This is my technique!

^^ Exactly! It's the BEST!!

sadly there's not a low carb option!! 😢

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 17/02/2023 11:03

A proper custard slice is such an elusive thing. I will happily scoff a supermarket offering but the pastry is always a thick wet wodge rather than a crisp delight.

snowqu33n · 17/02/2023 11:05

Squeeze down and eat the bulging-out custard from the sides until there is a manageable amount of custard left between the pastry bits. Use a bit of waxed paper to hold it if you’re desperate to keep your fingers clean.

StrawberryPavlova · 17/02/2023 11:07

It's got to be sideways.

Was just wondering what to have for lunch. Off to Greggs it is.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2023 11:07

I don't like the icing so always remove it. But yes, I get the custard everywhere and all over my fingers.

snowqu33n · 17/02/2023 11:08

They were called a “vanilla slice” at the bakery I worked at for a Saturday job when I was a teenager.
Fresh cream version was officially a “Mille Feuille” but pronounced by shop staff “Milly Filly”😁

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 17/02/2023 11:10

I've just eaten one 😋

Sideways on plate... sliced into (enormous) bite sized pieces using knife and fork...

Now to try not to eat the second one that's still in the packet on the fridge...
