If you can, share your technique.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm talking about one of these:

Absolutely the slicing.
I am feeling morose reading this thread as I can’t eat Custard Slices any more. I am coeliac.
The best ones used to have a thin layer of jam in the bottom slice of puff pastry. Sigh.
I need to try and make a Gluten Free one.

Joining the coeliac custard slice mourners club. Though I hadn't had one for at least five years before being diagnosed, cause I'm diabetic too 😖 LIFE IS CRUEL (and food shopping is arduous)

bellac11 · 17/02/2023 13:38

I know Im a complete kill joy but I cannot abide food that you make a mess with

Same goes for those impossible massive burgers and things like an egg mayonnaise crusty roll. Impossible to eat, everything squishes out.

Or a grated cheese and salad sandwich on floppy bread. Barely any filling by the time it reaches your mouth

IncompleteSenten · 17/02/2023 13:38

I take off the bottom bit and eat that first.
Then I eat the top bit with the icing.
Then I eat the custard filling.

amusedbush · 17/02/2023 13:39

I flip it over and peel off the bottom bit of pastry. Eat that first to get rid of it - it's boring and the worst layer of the cake.

Then eat the custard and the iced top bit together.

averythinline · 17/02/2023 13:40

always used to do the squish, lick custard from the sides then eat tge rest in reduced size bites.... ..now usually do sideqays, although am interested in flipping the top layer ..
however more importantly where do you get them in Swansea market????

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 17/02/2023 15:25

Oh wow I was just in Gregg's too and I went with the sugar strand donut over the slice!! Why did I do that 😂The donut was rubbish too, they must have changed it.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2023 15:27

I'm sorry, all of you talking about Greggs need to come to Stoke-on-Trent and experience Wrights

knittingaddict · 17/02/2023 15:51

Take the top off and eat. Repeat with the bottom. Eat custard with a fork.

Went to Yorkshire last year and there were custard slices everywhere. Good ones too. It was heaven.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/02/2023 16:11

Turn the top layer over so you're not holding onto the icing when eating

BoredBetsy · 17/02/2023 10:40

Take the top off and put it underneath. Then you have custard on the top and a double layer underneath. All the pleasure and none of the mess.

Madam, you are a genius

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 17/02/2023 10:48

Lid off and flip - so that the icing is inside and pastry on the outside to avoid sticky fingers - and then dive in and enjoy. A bit of messy gooiness is part of the joy of a custard slice. They were my Dad's favourite treat and he taught me this way.

@TaffyandTeenyTaffy I hope your dad received a knighthood for this at the very least.

Cam22 · 17/02/2023 16:16

Adore them. Mmmmmmm

Cam22 · 17/02/2023 16:17
  1. Cake forks are hopeless.
  2. I wouldn’t dare eat one in public!
DaveyJonesLocker · 17/02/2023 16:20

You do not use cutlery for a custard slice you animals!

I alternate eating the top with a bit of custard and the bottom with a bit of custard. Like by biting diagonally from the middle of the custard to one of the biscuits, you get the best distribution of icing that way. And now I need one.

JunkinDonuts · 17/02/2023 16:26

I put a side plate under my chin to catch all the custardy deliciousness.
Which I then lick clean.
It's like finding that last sweet in the bag when you think they've all gone.... bonus. 😋

Wbeezer · 17/02/2023 16:27

Turn it on its side and or eat it with a cake fork

closingscore · 17/02/2023 16:28

You can't, but they are magnificent. I'd love to know how to eat them and manage to get equal amounts of pastry/icing/custard in each mouthful.

Sausagenbacon · 17/02/2023 16:28

Yabu for making me want one. Yum

Sausagenbacon · 17/02/2023 16:39

This is awful. Can't stop thinking of cake.
We had a holiday in Northern Ireland, which is brilliant for baking, including the delicious
15s (which don't seem to leave the country)

Florissant · 17/02/2023 17:17

Top tip: when you eat the top layer, turn it upside down so the icing part is on your tongue, not the roof of your mouth.

Sparkleshine21 · 17/02/2023 17:19

Put it on its side and use a fork!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 17/02/2023 17:23

Take the top off and put it underneath. Then you have custard on the top and a double layer underneath. All the pleasure and none of the mess.

My God, I think you should be given some sort of award for this genius!

CousinKrispy · 17/02/2023 17:27

I never thought about turning it sideways. Brilliant! Thank you!

Crinkle77 · 17/02/2023 17:30

Reallybadidea · 17/02/2023 10:25

Slice in half horizontally. Eat each half separately, saving the icing half until last of course.

That's exactly how I do it too 😂

Melroses · 17/02/2023 17:32

mr-pauls-pantry.com/vanilla-custard-slice/

The custard slices from the bakers of my childhood were more flakey and soft like the one in this picture, with more custard in the middle part than the edges.

They were easier to eat than the hard ones you get in supermarkets now, but still squished outwards if you got it wrong.
