Really hope she's found soon

My cousin has been missing for 36 hours now vanished. The police are looking for her. Not every case grabs the media's attention

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 15/02/2023 22:50

Why do YOU think 'Mariama Kallon' hasn't been in the news as much as Nicola Bulley @BorisJohnsonsHair ???

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 22:51

BorisJohnsonsHair · 15/02/2023 21:19

For all those saying "you've linked to the news" ... She's been missing for 6 days and until today there's been nothing in the mainstream media.

Whether she has run away or not she is only 13 years old and very vulnerable.

but there are thousands of 13 year olds missing. If we read news articles about all of them, it would literally be our full time jobs, there would be no time to ever do anything else

GyozaGuiting · 15/02/2023 22:53

If someone runs away a lot it often doesn’t make national news, so if it’s not out of character for example. It’s still sad, but it’s very different to, for example, an urgent murder enquiry needing to move at pace.

Nicola Bully because its "gone viral" - no particular reason for it - there are so many thousands missing, it is normally only if there is a reason to think that publicity might save them from harm, that anyone is highlighted by the police, - less than 1% of cases.

She hasn't been in the news because

a) it's not the first time she's gone missing, so it's not out of character or suspicious
b) she's been sighted twice so it's not thought she's come to any harm
c) she's not white and blonde (appalling that this affects coverage but unfortunately true)

Point c) is absolutely generally true, but in this case I don’t think it would matter if she was, unless she was a billionaire’s kid or something, because a) and b) explain why it’s not a big story. There is also d) loads of people go missing and don’t get much coverage even if they are young, pretty and white. It does depend on there being enough space in the news landscape, and there being something within the story that can catch alight.

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 22:55

and who decides who is "missing"? Some one can report someone missing, and they are not missing, the police know where they are, but keep it confidential, so everyone thinks that person is still "missing" - and they are, to some people - but not in the sense that there is any police looking for them

Because she's black, she's not as important to society as a white woman unfortunately.
You'll get posters trying to divert it, "she is in the news" but it's racism. Pure and simple.

This. One doesn't really need to scratch too deeply on MN to see unconscious bias and racism.

Unlike a missing 45 year old who is white, blonde, middle class from a na-ice area, and who has 10+ threads slobbering over her on this site alone? Splashing her business all over the news for the general public to salivate over hasn't stopped anyone, has it? I think a 13 year old deserves as much. Or isn't she the right kind of girl?

Just when I think this site can't plumb the depths any further, it just keeps on giving...

One missing white woman. How many white women do you think are missing right now? Someone in the UK gets reported missing every 90 seconds and you can pull one person that there has been 10+ threads about? Why are you just focusing on this girl? Why not the 100s of other people that have reported missing today? Why don't you care about them? Are they not the right type of person? Wtf is wrong with you? Why haven't you started threads about every single missing person? Don't you care? Are they not important enough to you? Ffs just when you think people can't get any worse.

I know a white girl of the same age who went missing. It also did not hit the news. It's because she, like this girl, had been missing before - and that suggests that there hasn't been an abduction - that the girl has gone somewhere of her own free will. The girl I know who went missing returned after a few days. Hopefully this girl will too.

It hits the national news straight away when it's completely unexpected and out of character. eg Milly Dowler.

JackieDaws · 15/02/2023 23:09

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 23:03

Lmao, she's only been in the news properly today because quite rightly, a lot of people have kicked up a massive fuss to get it into the news.

Nicola Bulley was in the news about an hour after it was discovered she'd gone missing and had friends in the right places.

Working class people have no such connections, especially Black teenage girls.

They can’t do a breaking news story every time she runs away. Yes, it’s horrific. Yes, she’s so young. But as others have said, we’ve heard of her missing before and it is also in the news this time.

user40643 · 15/02/2023 23:11

I really can't. 🤣
white people will post anything but accepting their privilege.
I just laugh.

you mean you cant answer the question?

"Why isnt this girl in the news"

when she is in the news

"Why isnt this girl in the news as much as a white girl"

when she is in the news and hundreds of missing white girls are not

The whole premise makes no sense.

No wonder you dont think you can answer

The 'terrible home life' bollocks has been rolled out already I see. There are a variety of reasons why children leave. Don't be so lazy as to assume it's the environment.

Don’t be stupid. There is no comparison between the two cases. One is where a woman was out walking her dog, and disappeared into thin air, under very suspicious circumstances. The other is about a child who has run away on multiple other occasions, and there have been sightings of her since she has gone missing again. Children run away from home. A lot. As we speak, there are literally hundreds of runaways, some of whom will turn up, and others won’t. As someone upthread said, it’s unusual for something like this to even make the news.

I really dont understand what people are trying to say here, or why, hundreds of white 13 year old girls are missing and not in the news. Also Asian girls. so what?

I understand maybe people are concerned about missing children, but I am not even seeing any of that on here, specifically ( people probably are, but it isnt what this thread is about)

The questions "why isnt this girl in the news" when she is, and "why isnt she in the news as much as a white girl" when she is in the news more than hundreds of missing white girl...

And then it this is pointed out, people get VERY defensive, and retreat into memes about white privilege, etc....

I mean, what is actually the substance of these questions?

What is it?

There isnt any, none at all, really there isnt, and getting sarky and pretending to be all superior doesnt change that.

Maybe lets try and think what we can do for ALL missing girls?

may be more constructive

Nicola Bulley has stayed in the news because it's such a mystery - the missing body, the dog, the phone, picturesque surroundings, pretty village, river leading to the sea. Itsclike tv show. It's interesting to the press what could have happened. Plus they can throw around police incompetency.
A case involving a 13yo regular runaway, who is clearly staying somewhere where she can change regularly and is seen out and about doesn't have the same mystery about it.
